Third time lucky

  1. Third time lucky

I started a story not so long ago, but unfortunately a bad sequence of results led to me being sacked before I even got the majority uploaded, I then started once more as Arsenal manager dropping out of each competition early but finishing higher than expected in second place to Chelsea by 3 points. Confidence was high but last night following a run of 23 matches with only 1 defeat the team imploded, for no reason I can identify they then failed to win four in a row so the board set me a target 11 points from 5 matches very doable I thought........ Liverpool and Chelsea away were my next two matches and ultimately my final two matches in charge.

So here I am again, I intend to spend a bit more time on everything and hope I can have some success this time around. Being an Arsenal supporter it does feel like like unfinished business so once more I have taken the helm at the Emirates.

  2. So the board want me to play possession and attacking based football as well as develop players through the youth system, this seems acceptable considering the squad we have. We are predicted fourth however the board won't allow this as an expectation this season so I have a choice between Title Challenge - 36M and 1.8Mp/w or Winner - 39.5M and 1.9M p/w (current spend 1.64M p/w)

so a bit of a no brainier I opted for title challenge although would have rather had European qualification as an option in first season.
this time around my first focus is going to be on coaches, I have neglected this area in the past but want to raise all the stars in the coaching area to five over the next two seasons.

    Coaches in:
Paulo Paixao, David Platt, Renzo Cassellato, Gian Nicola Bisciotti and Philipp Laux
    Coach Out:
    Marcus Svensson

This resulted in only Shooting having 3 1/2 stars and the rest being 4 or higher.

If anybody knows how much this actually impacts upon the team please let me know.

  3. Friendlies and transfers

    Arsenal 3 Arsenal U21s 0

    Giroud, Walcott, Podolski MOM: Sagna

    Ayr 0 Arsenal 4
Giroud, Ramsey (2), Oxlade Chamberlain. MOM: Ramsey

The first signings of the season Sven Bender was signed for £14M and striker Mame Diouf was signed for £4.9M. A 15M signing of Alexis Sanchez was cancelled after being agreed because of a shortage of funds????? Although having taken a second look at my squad he may have been an unnecessary signing, something I want to avoid this save round.

  4. Gladbach 1 Arsenal 1
    Koscielny

I sold Fabianski to Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £2.1M, I like Fabianski in real life but as with real life he was in the final year of his contract and wanting first team football which I was never going to offer him that. Mikel Arteta also left for Manchester United for £7.5M outright, hate selling players to rivals but he is a 31 year old defensive midfielder and with Bender coming in it is safe to say he is surplus to requirements and not a threat anymore.

    Arsenal 8 Corinthian 0
Diouf (3), Wilshere (2), Koscielny, Giroud (2). MOM: Diouf

Signed centre back Juan Jesus from Inter Milan in a £7M deal and terminated the Kim Kallstrom loan deal who was pointlessly hiding in the U21s squad.

    Besiktas 0 Arsenal 2
    Ramsey, Diouf. MOM: Ramsey

    Aris 0 Arsenal 2
    Koscielny, Wilshere. MOM: Koscielny

  5. Looking at my squad I feel quite happy with the exception of left back, I aren't the biggest fan of Monreal and whilst I like Gibbs he can be injury prone, I also like the option of playing him as an attacking midfielder. So looking to the future I decided I was going to purchase Luke Shaw, although I know I am going to have to pay through the nose for him, but he is a homegrown player with very high potential so I had to bite the bullet. I visited the board who increased the transfer budget to £24.15M.

    Arsenal 2 Velez 1
    Wilshere, Walcott

    Arsenal 4 Anderlecht 2
    Mertesacker, Giroud, Jenkinson, Diouf

After meeting with staff and setting individual training schedules they suggest Monreal tutor Jenkinson, I like Jenkinson and as I previously mentioned not Monreal's biggest fan, Monreal gave me no further cause to like him as he refused to help.

Although help was on the way I signed Luke Shaw for a staggering £26.5M (although that is less than United in real life). Monreal will remain until at least January when I reassess the squad. I have a couple of hundred thousand left in transfer budget and about 80K per week to allow for wages not too bad.

  6. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, tips or feedback. Thanks

  7. Add some screenshots

  8. Arsenal 5 Hayes Gate 0
Diouf, Ramsey, Oxlade Chamberlain, Mertesacker, Giroud MOM: Diouf

I created some fixtures against far weaker opponents to give the team confidence. I also promoted Dan Crowley to the main squad, it was a toss up between him and Zelalem, but I figured with the formation I was playing at the moment Dan Crowley would be of more use at the time being.

The Champions League Playoff fixtures were drawn and Arsenal were drawn against FC Red Bull Salzburg.

Tomas Rosicky was sold to Celtic for 600K, I love Rosicky he represents what I believe professional footballers should be, hardworking, exciting, attacking, leave everything on the pitch and don't make the papers for anything other than football. However in this save I am trying to keep my squad a manageable size.

    The final friendly:
    Arsenal 7 Sutton United 0
Oxlade Chamberlain (2), Diouf (2), Koscielny, Ozil, Crowley MOM: Oxlade Chamberlain

Crowley made his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt and got on the scoresheet in a true confidence builder.

As pre seasons go 9 wins, 1 draw and 0 defeats isn't too bad, I know the fixtures weren't by any means the most difficult but 38 goals for and 4 goals against is not too shabby.

    Some screenshots coming I promise.

  9. The Season begins:

A tricky looking first fixture, Liverpool away. On one hand probably a good time to play them, no Suarez or Sturridge but it is one of the more difficult fixtures on paper so at least it is out of the way.

Oxlade Chamberlain's red card led to Newcastle putting the pressure on which gained them a consolation after we went 3-0 up. Dan Crowley's appearance meant that he became the youngest player in Premier League history. Assistant manager Steve Bould recommended we appeal against Oxlade Chamberlain's suspension as he believed the red was harsh - so we did.

We dominated this match and 0-0 was enough to go through on the away goal but it was squeaky bum time throughout. Look at the action zones for just how little we were under threat.

As always my first few matches have featured squad rotation quite heavily but as the season progresses a first choice line up will develop.

Oxlade Chamberlain's one match suspension was upheld.
In the Champions League group stage draw Arsenal were treated to a fairly tricky group which included PSG, Dortmund and Viktoria Plzen (I feel sorry for Viktoria, if they manage a point they will have done well.
The Capital One third round draw was more generous Leicester away.

Wilshere was injured in training for 2-3 weeks, with my next fixture being Man United away Wilshere and Oxlade Chamberlain will be greatly missed.

My two dominant wins in the Premier league landed me the August Manager of the Month award so quite pleased with the start to the save.

  10. I will be adding more in the next day or so but I was wondering what are people thinking so far any suggestions or tips. All feedback appreciated.

  11. September 13/14
Started the month with an injury to Giroud, thankfully he is only out for 3-5 days but this does mean for Manchester United away I am now without Wilshere and Giroud.

This was a god awful performance, the third goal coming from a penalty given away by Sagna with a completely unnecessary foul late on.

Podolski was then injured in training, because of the nature of the hip injury he would have to be sent to the specialist and would miss two months of the season.

I was dreading the next match, after the confidence of pre season and August the result against Man United had deflated me completely. Chelsea was not the best team to be playing next........ or were they?

Thomas Vermaelen missed a penalty at 0-0 and I have to confess I expected that to set the tone for the match. However we dominated and Bendtner rewarded my trust in him with his first of the season. Walcott unfortunately picked up another injury but is only out for 5-6 days.

A battle as you may expect against a reasonably strong Championship team away from home in a cup competition. We are through not too much else to take from this result. 2 games unbeaten and Giroud (normally a beast) picked up his first goal of the season.

The fourth round will see us play our North London rivals at Shite Hart Lane.

We dominated this match from start to finish and Walcott's goal was a deserving winner in every sense.

So that concluded September's fixtures. I finished third in Manager of the Month even with the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, Walcott's strike against Villa saw him collect the goal of the month and we finish the month in second place to an unbeaten Everton side.
Chelsea are massively underachieving and Mourinho may be the surprise first dismissal should their run continue.

From my experience, 90% of people will read, enjoy and follow the story without commenting. Upload the story and have fun because you enjoy the process, don't do it to get a following. Just because no ones commenting dose not mean people are not following

A bot of editing with the screenshots can really make a story come to life. Point us to where you want us to pay attention. Let us know what else is happening in your save (John Terry took over Aston Villa in my Liverpool Story and I had to do an update about it )

My Two cents: People come here to read a story, not read about FM. We spends most of our time playing FM, we want to see how you play it and what it means to you

  21. Looking good! Looks like Theo and Santi have been the pick of the bunch. I know Szczesny wouldn't have much to do, but an average rating of 6.74 just isn't good enough tbh, so maybe look for a top class keeper? Looks like all of your signings except Shaw need some time to adapt (this includes Ozil, I've got a save up to 2023 and I followed Arsenal and he was by far the top performer. Maybe push one of the CM to CAM and put Ozil there to get the most out of him??), you can see their average ratings are lower than the others.

It's looking very nice so far. I'm sure Everton will fall off soon, and once that happens you need to keep the good form up!

Another comfortable victory but another match without a clean sheet. Szczesny has played ok, but I am thinking we need a second keeper capable of challenging for the top spot. Liking the fact Bendtner is making a serious contribution this season and he has been rewarded with a contract extension. Although I do feel I need to purchase a top striker as strangely Giroud has failed to contribute more than 2 goals this season so far although he is getting limited opportunities.

Oxlade Chamberlain despite having such a good season missed only penalty in a well fought match. It was testament to the team and their defensive efforts that we held this to penalties. Two minutes from progressing to the semis and the traitorous RVP equalised, we ended the match with ten men. Not too disheartened away from home but just hope fitness levels don't suffer because of the effort this match took.

Podolski's injury in the United match was unfortunately serious and he will now miss 7 weeks to 2 months and Sagna is missing for the next 3-4 days. Podolski was a candidate to be sold in the January transfer window but that will not be able to happen now.

We finish top as the top goalscorers with the best goal difference, a truly deserved league title. Mourinho turned it around finishing second and winning most of the manager of the months from the second half of the season.

Villa relegated and sack their manager Zola. Hull also part company with Steve Bruce.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain wins Footballer of the year. 16 goals 35 games with an average rating of 7.30.
Bendtner top league goalscorer with 21 goals (tied with Suarez but played fewer matches).
Oxlade Chamberlain won goal of the season.
I win manager of the year.
Bendtner, Cazorla, Oxlade Chamberlain and Sagna all make the team of the year.

    Manchester United sack David Moyes.
    Aston Villa hire Gus Poyet.
    Manchester United hire Gus Hiddink.

  32. So I will be visiting my champions later on today with a view of enhancing the squad later today before we begin our title defence, I have always struggled a little in the second season. So I put forward a question, who should I sell? Who should I buy?

I am sending two scouts to the World Cup to scout for players and will be looking for some players for the future and a couple to challenge for first team straight away.

i'm looking to sell Monreal, Flamini and Jenkinson as well as Diaby. New signings Diouf and Jesus have asked to move due to lack of football, I should be able to make a profit on Diouf and hopefully at least break even on the slightly more expensive Jesus. I wouldn't say they were poor signings we won the league, but if they want out I can't really argue a reason why they shouldn't.

So priorities are a reliable RB, Sagna had a good season but will be 32 at start of next season so a current ability of 3 stars minimum is required. A goalkeeper who can support or challenge Szczesny for the first team spot would be good. An attacking player to replace Diouf and another CB to replace Jesus. A versatile defence minded midfielder is my final hope, with Flamini being on the way out Bender is my only DM in the team.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

  33. Nicklas Bendtner came third in the European golden shoe award behind Matri and Ronaldo.

I sold Carl Jenkinson to Cardiff for £4.1M. So long Carl I like you but you just don't have the potential to fit into my line up once Sagna exits.

I reject bids from Manchester City (£29.5M) and Chelsea (£27.5M) for Aaron Ramsey.

I sold Mathieu Flamini to Saint Etienne for £2.8M, a little on the low side but he wasn't playing and now he is 30 his value is not going to increase.
We also saw the departure of Monreal (WOO!!!!) to Olympique de Marseille for £6.5M.

We signed Liam McNeil (Regen) from Middlesbrough for an initial £1.3M.

I rejected a second bid from Chelsea for Ramsey, this time it totalled £36.5M but spread out over 4 years. Would have been tempted if it was all up front.

Arsenal moved up to 6th in the World based on reputation.

We replaced Carl Jenkinson with Serge Aurier for £9M.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain understandably won the fans player of the year for last season.

Olympique de Marseille make an offer for Nicklas Bendtner, not only our top scorer from last season but also the Premierships top scorer, his value has strangely only risen to £9.5M (£13 million less than Jonny Evans moved to Spurs for) but OM come in with a sensational bid of £5.75M???????? Less than they bought Monreal for....... seriously what are they smoking?

Sold two of last seasons signings, Juan Jesus moved to Frankfurt for the fee which we purchased him for £7M. Mame Diouf who did notably better but was still unhappy about lack of opportunities moved for almost double what we paid 10 months earlier, leaving for Sevilla for £8.5M.

OM improve their Bendtner bid to £6.96M. What a joke.

Batshuayi the £6.75M signing of January who made one appearance and annoyed some of the supporters left for a season long loan to CSKA Moscow.

We make a massive signing in the form of Javier Pastore from PSG in a deal worth £18.25M.

PSG then make a bid of £2.5 M for Sagna, we try to negotiate for £7M and after consideration they withdraw their offer.

We sign Jorge Vivas (regen) from Boca Juniors in a deal worth £3.7M, he will join us in August 2015.

We then have to spend slightly more than desired on a second keeper, we made several moves for Jack Butland but considering he was valued at 900K the £30M price tag Stoke were looking for made negotiations impossible, so we opted for John Ruddy from Norwich for £7M.

We dominated this game in terms of shots, a late brace from Giroud made the scoreline look more secure than it actually was for the majority of the match.

We are top with two games to spare, Chelsea are one behind us and Liverpool three behind us.

  41. Arsenal 2 QPR 2
    Giroud (2)

Chelsea won as did Liverpool so we are now 2nd with a point separating us from the teams either side. We face Cardiff the team that beat us on the final day last season. Chelsea visit Palace who are already relegated.

    Arsenal 3 Cardiff 1
    Walcott (2), Cazorla

We won the game and had to wait for the load screen to show the other scores, it was definitely nervy but would you believe it Palace won 1-0 Nd we seal the title for the second consecutive season.

My next entry will show the ins and outs and have a look at the squad for the next season.

  42. Players Out:
GK: Damien Martinez - The 23 year old goalkeeper made 0 starts during my time in charge despite spending the final season of his Arsenal career in the senior squad.

Martinez left to Inglostadt in a deal worth £1.1M

Mid: Ryo Miyachi - Never made an appearance under my leadership, spent his time out on loan. He was entering the final season of his contract and decided to cash in.

Miyachi left for HSV in a deal worth £1.5M

Oxlade Chamberlain - Had a cracking first season whilst I was in charge ultimately finishing as the player of the season for the Premier League however a bid came in which was too good to turn down from league rivals Manchester City.

Playing record under me: Appearances 67 (31), Goals 24, Assists 24, MOM: 7

Those figures are relatively impressive, almost 100 appearances in my first two seasons meaning Oxlade Chamberlain is the first key player to leave the club.

Oxlade Chamberlain left for Manchester City in a for a grand total of £45M.

Att: Michy Batshuayi - Another one of my first season signings to leave, his signing was not one approved of by the fans and because of Bendtner's first season form never broke through and spent the second season out on loan.

Playing record under me: Appearances 1 (1)

Signed in the first January transfer window for his minimum fee release clause for £6.75M sold for a small profit of £8.25M.

Nicklas Bendtner - Had requested a move during the second season, he had limited opportunities in the second season despite his impressive first season showing. Despite him later withdrawing his request he was always a player I was looking to move on in this window.

Playing record under me: Appearances 35 (14), Goals 29, Assists 9, MOM: 6
29 goals in 49 appearances means that I am need of a new goalscorer as a ratio of over 1 goal every 2 matches is impressive.

Bendtner went for a reasonably low fee of £6M to Hertha BSC.

Joel Campbell - Spent the first season out on loan but after a good World Cup in real life I decided to give him an opportunity second season, unfortunately broke his leg early doors and missed most of the remainder of the season.

Playing record under me: Appearances 4 (4), Goals 2, Assists 1, MOM: 1

Joel Campbell left to HSV to join Ryo Miyachi, for the fee of £3.7m

    Players IN:

Jese - With a potential of 4 and a half stars the Real Madrid striker is in his early 20s and can also play as an attacking midfielder left, right or centre. Asked the board to deal with this transfer and they secure his services in a deal worth £23.5M.

Matija Nastasic - Another player in his early 20s with a potential of 4 and a half stars. This time it's a CB from Manchester City in a deal worth £17.5M

Fernando - Signed from Shaktar for £16M, the defensive midfielder isn't going to develop much more and has relatively consistent and solid stats without being outstanding, signed as cover for Bender. Will probably only play for a season or two, but could turn out to be a necessary signing.

Emre Can - signed from Leverkusen for £11.25M, just one week after they tried to get me to pay £111 Million for him and wouldn't budge on that fee. A potential of 4.5 stars he should be better than Bender and Fernando and can also play left back but is weaker in the position than Shaw and Nastasic. So time will tell on his impact on the team.

Andreas Holzinger - A right or left back/ wing back this regen came for the princely sum of £6.25K and has a potential of 4 stars, if nothing else should be able to make a healthy profit on him in a season or two.

For a team who won the Premier League the past two seasons our players have not been coveted by many. I tried to sell the following players and had no offers over half their value for any of them: Gibbs, Sagna, Vermaelen, Mertesacker and Podolski. Varane had asked to be sold due to lack of first team appearances but I see him, Nastasic and Koscielny as my three rotating centre backs so I tried to negotiate for high fees which led to no sales and him eventually withdrawing his transfer request.

  43. My Squad.

    Goalkeepers:
    Wojciech Szczesny, John Ruddy

    Defenders:
Bacary Sagna, Serge Aurier, Kieran Gibbs, Luke Shaw, Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Matija Nastasic, Raphael Varane

    Midfielders:
Fernando, Sven Bender, Emre Can, Aaron Ramsey, Dan Crowley, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Javier Pastore, Santi Cazorla, Otavio, Serge Gnabry, Mesut Ozil

Strikers: Olivier Giroud, Jese, Jorge Vivas, Liam McNeil
