The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa

  1. The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa

    THE SIR ALEX FERGUSON CHALLENGE
Hi guys, welcome to my new thread, “The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge”. I have knowledge that this challenge has been on for quite a long time now. A lot of people have started this challenge, some failed, others succeeded. I don’t plan to fail. I hope this thread wouldn’t bore readers. Hopefully. I would try to emulate Ferguson’s success at Manchester United. Take charge of a team in 19th place and make them world beaters.

“I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. Football. Bloody Hell” – Sir Alex Ferguson, 1999

    CHALLENGE REQUIREMENTS
    1. Holiday until November 6th - Ferguson took over Man United on November 6th 1986.
    2. Take over the team 2nd bottom in the Premiership - United were 2nd bottom when Fergie took over.
    3. Stay at this one club - Ferguson stayed at United until 2013.
    4. Aim to bring youth players through - Ferguson often focused on bringing youth through, notably in 1995 with the likes of Giggs, Beckham, Neville, Scholes, Butt to name but a few, aka Fergie's Fledglings.
    5. Persuade long term players to become part of your backroom staff and/or managers. E.g. Scholes, Solskjaer, Bruce, Keane, Berg, Ince, Robson, Hughes, Strachan, Blanc, Robins etc

    GOALS

    • Win a domestic cup within 4 seasons - Ferguson won his first cup vs Crystal Palace in 89/90
    • Win a league title within 7 seasons - Ferguson won his first title in 92/93
    • Win a league and cup double within 8 seasons - Ferguson won his first double with United in 93-94
    • Win a league, cup and Champions League within 13 seasons- Ferguson won the infamous treble in 98/99

I WOULD BE BACK WITH HOLIDAY RESULT ON NOVEMBER 6, 2014. I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS.

    ASTON VILLA – A BACKGROUND

Aston Villa Football Club also known as Villa, The Villa, The Villans, The Lions are a professional football club based in Witton, Birmingham, who play in the Premier League, the highest level of English football. Founded in 1874, they have played at their current home ground, Villa Park, since 1897. Aston Villa were founder members of The Football League in 1888. They were also founder members of the Premier League in 1992, and have remained there ever since.Aston Villa are among the oldest and the most successful football clubs in the history of English football. Villa won the 1981–82 European Cup, and are thus one of five English clubs to win what is now the UEFA Champions League. They have the fourth highest total of major honors won by an English club, having won the First Division Championship seven times (most recently in the 1980–81 season), the FA Cup seven times (last won in 1957), the Football League Cup five times (last won in 1996) and the UEFA Super Cup in 1982. The club have also produced more England national team players than any other side, currently having produced 72.
They have a fierce local rivalry with Birmingham City. The Second City derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham City has been played since 1879. Their traditional badge is of a rampant gold lion on a light blue background with the club's motto "Prepared" underneath; a modified version of this was adopted in 2007.

    SQUAD OVERVIEW
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-squadlist.jpg

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND OTHER OBSERVATIONS
THE BAD, Veteran defender Ron Vlaar has been sold to Marsielle for £2.7m. Efe Ambrose was bought to replace him?? Bad Business Lambert.
THE GOOD, Benteke is still at the club.
Jack Grealish, the hottest prospect at the club is on loan at Burnley. I wish I could recall him though. The squad will be built around Benteke. Cleverley, Bacuna and Delph should be vital the midfield. Okore is currently is our best defender. We will use Guzan more often in the goalline. He is clearly a better choice than ageing Shay Given. Other important players are Agbonlahor, Weimann, N’zogbia, Richardson, Sinclair.

  4. I holidayed till 6th November 2014, looked at the table and realized that I am going to be taking over at Villa Park. This might turn out to be a tough test. Lambert couldn’t keep them above the relegation spot. We hope to do better. To become not only the longest serving manager at Aston Villa but to a “Fergie”. Take a look at the table.

Team meeting follows. Benteke is looking fired up!! I like that.

The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-teammeetingnov6.jpg
    Our Next Fixtures for November are;

    9th November - Hull (Away)
    23rd November - Westbrom (Home)
    30th November - Tottenham (Away)

    Let's do this.

  7. NOVEMBER 2014
4–3 vs Hull. (AWAY) Sunday 9/11/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vshullresult2014.jpg
What a debut game!! Our defending was poor though. Complacency level was on the high. We started poorly allowing Livermore score as early as the second minute. Westwood replied after 11 minutes with a powerful long range strike. Tom Cleverley scored from distance almost identical with Westwood’s. With Hull defending poorly, we scored another through Fabian Delph. Just when we thought we had the game in the bag. N’Doye scored a brace to equalize. I was gutted. We were both defending poorly. But wait for it. Sinclair!! An incisive finish from the man city reject put us ahead again on 85 minutes. It isn’t Fergie Time. It is my Time!!!!
Player of the Match: Tom Cleverley

1-1 vs West Brom. (HOME) Sunday 23/11/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vswestbromresult2014.jpg
First Home game of my era. I wanted to make a statement to the fans. Bacuna’s early tap-in on 2 minutes got us off to a flyer. The start I needed. Well, Antonio Cassano wasn’t having any of it as he slotted in the equalizer for West Brom on the 28th minute. Another complacency issue again. It remained like that the final whistle. Funny part…..Antonio Cassano got injured. I felt happy. He broke my heart, we had to break his leg.
Player of the Match: Youssouf Mulumbu

4-1 vs Tottenham (AWAY) Sunday 30/11/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vstottenham2014result.jpg
A trip to White hart lane on another Sunday fixture. I couldn’t calm my nerves before the start of this match. I was worried about our defending. Well, Delph and Bacuna weren’t as they notched in two first half goals to put us comfortably ahead at half time. Benteke scored his first goal with me in charge in the 50th minute. It was a fine header. Townsend pulled one back for Tottenham. I thought a de javu moment was here until Sinclair scored another late minute goal. Delight from the fans. Solid win.
Player Of the Match: Leandro Bacuna.

Summary: 2 wins out of three. Poor defending in the first two games. Seemed to improve in the third. We are out of the relegation zone. Sitting on 16th position. Hopefully we will even improve in the busy December. Player of the month award goes to Tom Cleverley. He was simply brilliant. Averaging 8.5 rating per game.

  8. DECEMBER 2014

1-3 vs Stoke. (AWAY) Wednesday 3/12/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsstokeresult2014.jpg
Bad game for us. Stoke came to play football. Poor defending again. Good to see Benteke in scoring form. Not a good way to start to month.
Player of the Match: Victor Moses.
2-0 vs Liverpool. (HOME) Saturday 6/12/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsliverpoolresult2014.jpg
Second home game of my tenure. A better defensive performance. First half goals from Bacuna and Cleverley sealed the win for us. Okore got sent off. Three-match ban. He is going to be missed.
Player of the Match: Tom Cleverley.
3-5 vs Chelsea. (AWAY) Saturday 13/12/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vschelsea2014result.jpg
*Sigh*. Okore’s absence was felt. Terrible defending. We weren’t favorites though but we could have done better. A brace from Sinclair wasn’t enough to save a point against an impressive Chelsea.
Player of the Match: Diego Costa
1-0 vs Newcastle. (HOME) Saturday 20/12/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsnewcastle2015result.jpg
No Okore. No Benteke (Injured). An early goal from Bacuna sealed the win for us, He has been impressive since my arrival.
Player Of the match: Leandro Bacuna
1-2 vs Swansea. (HOME) Friday 26/12/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsswansea2015result.jpg
Complacency had not been an issue for a while now until this match. We got to a flyer through a wonderful strike by Delph. It stayed like that till Bafetimi Gomis decided to exploit our complacent and weak defence with a brace. Poor result.
Player of the Match: Bafetimi Gomis.
3-2 vs Leicester. (AWAY) Sunday 28/12/14
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsleicesterresult2015.jpg
This had to be the easiest game of the month but Kramaric couldn’t save his impressive display for another day. Benteke is back, fit and in scoring form – a brace from the Belgian. Bacuna scores again.
    Player of the Match: Benteke.

    SUMMARY
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-tom-cleverley-517051.jpg
Player Of the Month: Tom Cleverley (Average Rating: 7.7)

A busy month. Six matches. Three wins, three draws. Looks fair but we should always aim for better. Far from the relegation zone now. Once more, Tom Cleverley was simply brilliant. We just might be active in the transfer market.

  9. JANUARY 2014

0-2 vs ManUtd. (AWAY) Thursday 1/1/15

The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsmanutdresultepl2015.jpg
Happy New Year?? Sad way to start it. We clearly didn’t stand a chance on paper. United were on form. Top of the table. Poor defending again. We need re-enforcements this January. Low transfer budget though.
Player of the match: R. Van Persie
1-1 vs Southampton. (AWAY) Sunday 4/1/15 (FA Cup 3rd Round)
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vssouthamptonresultfacup2015.jpg
The players clearly looked tired after just a 2-day break. We were lucky to hold on to this draw as the saints kept press till the final whistle. We hope to do better in the replay in front of our fans at home.
Player of the match: Victor Wanyama
1-0 vs West Ham. (HOME) Saturday 10/1/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vswesthamresult2015.jpg
Thank You Benteke! An early strike from Benteke gave us the three points we needed. We almost added more after Alex Song’s dismissal. Three points in the bag. No complains about our performance.
Player of the match: Scott Sinclair
2-0 vs Southampton. (HOME) Wednesday 14/1/15 (FA Cup 3rd Round Replay)
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vssouthamptonfacupreplay2015.jpg
An improvement from the first leg. Home advantage. A big improvement. Regardless of Clark's send off early in the game we still got away with a win through Benteke brace.
Player of the match: Christian Benteke
    3-0 vs Q.P.R. (HOME) Saturday 17/1/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsqprresultepl2015.jpg
Wonderful performance by our midfielders. Richardson, Bacuna, N’Zogbia with a goal each to seal an impressive win for us. A frustrated Clint Hill earned an early bath in 87th minute.
Player of the match: Leandro Bacuna
4-2 vs Chelsea. (HOME) Saturday 24/1/15 (FA Cup 4th Round)
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vschelseafacup2015result.jpg
Our best performance so far. An early scare from Salvio but we bounced back with four goals to send Chelsea parking from the FA Cup.
    Player of the match: Ramires
2-1 vs Everton. (AWAY) Tuesday 27/1/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsevertonresult2015.jpg
A good win. Weinmann ends a long goal drought. Own goal from john stones. A fine performance from the lads. Three straight EPL wins now.
Player of the match: Gareth Barry
1-3 vs Arsenal. (HOME) Sunday 31/1/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsarsenalresult2015epl.jpg
Gutted. We just couldn’t stop Arsenal from the beginning of the second half. Complacency!!! I hate this. Ineffective team talk…I guess. Benteke’s goal in the first half wouldn’t be forgotten. If only we stayed focused. We drop to 10th position on the table.
Player of the match: Theo Walcott
    SUMMARY
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-leandro-bacuna-aston-villa.jpg
Player of the Month: Leandro Bacuna (Average Rating: 7.6)
Eight matches. Wow. Just when I thought December was busier. We performed very well in the EPL..We notched up three straight wins before losing to an impressive Arsenal. Our best performance of the month was our win against Chelsea. Wonderful performance. We are through to the 5th round of the FA Cup. There was no transfer business both in and out...i'm okay with the squad for now.

  10. The Chelsea game must have been in the 4th round, and you advanced to the 5th round. Thought I would point it out.

  14. FEBRUARY 2015

4-1 vs Hull. (HOME) Wednesday 11/2/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vshullresult2015leg2epl.jpg
A better performance than the last we met. Good defending. We defended so well that Ambrose was fed up…He scored for Hull.
    Player of the match: C.N’Zogbia
4-1 QPR (AWAY) Sunday 15/2/15 (FA Cup 5th Round)
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsqpr_facup.jpg
Another 4-1 win. Benteke on the scoresheet again. A brace. Good performance. I love February. We are through to the 6th round. It just might be our year.
    Player of the match: Benteke
    2-2 Burnley (AWAY) Wednesday 18/2/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vsburnleyepl2015.jpg
I was expecting another 4-1 streak. Burnley defended well…N’zogbia equalized later in the second half to save a point for us.
Player of the match: Dean Marney
    3-1 Sunderland (AWAY) Saturday 21/2/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vs-sunderland2015eplresult.jpg
Good performance. Agbonlahor’s exceptional performance sealed the win for us. Sad to see Richardos get injured in the 88th minute.
    Player of the match: Agbonlahor.
1-1 Crystal Palace (HOME) Saturday 28/2/15
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-vscyrstalpalaceresult2015epl.jpg
Boring first half. The match came alive in the last 20 minutes of the game. Just when Crystal palace were about to steal a win, Fabian Delph nodded in a winner from Richardson’s freekick. Last minute goals. This reminds of? …..Fergie!!!!
    Player of the match: K.Richardson.

    SUMMARY
The Sir Alex Ferguson Challenge - Aston Villa-richardson_kieran.jpg

Player of the month: Kieran Richardson. (Average Rating: 7.6)
Five games, three wins, two draws. No loss. Impressive. First month without a loss. We are getting better? Or did we just have an easy run of games. We would see in March. 9th on the table. Au Revoir Relegation. We might just set our eyes on Euro Cup. Might.
