I grew up about 6 blocks from La Masia. It was only a stone throws away so I

grew up only one way. Every weekend my father would take me to church:
The Camp Nou was our temple; los culés would be our choir.

Football after school was a must. I'd run out onto the side streets, still
wearing my school uniform and play with the local kids. Each street had
it's own 'team'. A group who knew each other and played together.
Sometimes if we could find them, we'd play against the kids on another
street. It was a kind of territory battle; the honour of the street mattered
    to us.

I remember arriving home from school when I was eight. Christ, I remember
it like it was yesterday. My father was already home, which was strange
since he usually didn't get off work until 6pm on a weekday. Both my parents
stood in the main room of our small house, wide smiles on their face as they
handed me a open letter... a letter with the Barcelona F.C. seal on the cover.

    I couldn't believe it... I got in.

That was probably the hardest year of my life; and I had only moved up
the street. Some of the boys had flown over entire continents to sleep
in the bunk next to mine and they were naturally more lonely than me.
Though we were all home-sick, each one of us had people we left behind.
So we we all bonded together. We became each others family.

Training in the morning, school in the afternoon, Training in the evening...
It was bloody hard work. If our school work slacked off, we wouldn't be
allowed train for the weekend matches so we all pulled together and helped
each other out. I think that may have made the difference. Getting both an
    academic and football education.

I just wept. I buried myself into my mothers arms and just wept. I might have been 17
years old but when you are devastated, sometimes all you can do is cry. My contract
at Barcelona expired today... and they had not offered me a senior development deal.

    "You're a good kid Javier, but you haven't developed enough. I don't think you'll
get games here. If you want a career as a footballer... It's not going to be here"

I mean yeah, they're honest words, but they stung. Barcelona was my home..
and after 9 years in the academy... I was so close. Though I think loosing it
only made me want it more.

My time at Barcelona did however attract some attention. My agent told me
of a few clubs enquiring about my availability.

Villarreal offered my a development deal with their 'B' team. They are a huge
club but I wasn't sure if I wanted to play a bit part in their reserves.

Cádiz offered me a senior contract in their 1st team. Though they play in the third tier
of Spanish football, I was flattered they wanted me as a starter.

Las Palmas offered me a 2 year deal but I wasn't keen on moving that far form home.
The island of Grand Canaria was a long way from home.

So in the end I too the offer from Cádiz. They may be playing in the lower league but they
were offering me a starting role in their squad. I ended up staying there for 10 years.

Aged 26, I had worked my way up through the squad and had earned the captain's
armband. I can honestly say I grew to love Cádiz... but I still missed Barcelona.
They were the one that got away and I pushed myself everyday to hopefully
get a call to return. I knew it was a long shot but what else could I do.

Though my hard work did pay off. I earned a transfer to R.C. Deportivo.
Now playing in La Liga, I was excited as I would get to fulfil a lifelong dream.
I would walk out onto the Camp Nou as a professional player. It didn't matter
to me that I would be wearing the opposition colours.

I knew I would be jeered and hissed at. That was nothing personal, I was the enemy.
    I understood... But that only made me want it even more. If I couldn't play for them;
then I'll beat them.... We lost 4-1 but the fight was in me. I knew I was where I
    wanted to be!

I stayed at Deportivo for 5 years and hung up my boots at 31 years of age.
In total, I made 385 career appearances, scoring 102 goals over 15 years.

I never did achieve that dream of playing for Barcelona.
    But I'm not done yet..

    Maybe one day!
    I could one day
    I'll manage them!

Cheers mate. I was very keen on doing a Chelsea save but the drama 2 pages in killed the save for me.
I thought it'd be fun to go on an adventure with Javier Gonzalez Mendez rather than just go with one club.

For a first club, this is everything a young Manager dreams of. De Graafschap have been
tinkering between the 1st and 2nd tier of Dutch football but they have a solid base to build
upon and hopeful secure Erdevisie status. I've my fingers crossed that I get the job!

I guess I never really stood a chance. Rijkaard is a Legend of Dutch

job. I did get the meet the man though and we shared a great

I'm not going to change too much in my first year at the club. Get used to the area, the squad and the fans. Have a look at some of the youth products and battle for mid table. In the summer, I'll evaluate where we are and consider a promotion push.

  24. Brendn I have to say I was a silent follower with your Liverpool story, it was amazing (made better as I am a Liverpool fan.) I like how you don't set out buying all the usual players and winning everything from the start. You built it up and the squad as well. Now your doing a journey save makes me want to start one. What leagues did you have loaded?

  25. Wow, nice first job! Auxerre are very interesting. Surprised the board only expect mid table really, would have expected a promotion push.

There is a very French Core to the 1st team which is always what I like to see.
i grew up in Barcelona which is very tribal; you play for where you're from! It's
us against them. That was bread into me. In the lower leagues, a core domestic
unit is essential since everyone needs to be on the same page, we need to share
a language and a heritage. Nothing that may makes us feeling anything less than
    one unit!

There is somewhat on an injury spell at the moment. I've lost my first choice Goalkeeper,
three midfielder and a center back. One of my agreements with the board was to look to
youth first so I've drafted up 17 year old Titouan Le Roux to fill in as Goalkeeper.

    Javier Gonzales Mendez-untitled-3.png

I was quite impressed with the staff and coaching set up already existing at the club.

I'm going to study for my National A License over the summer and leave my Director of Football a
list of transfer targets. I'll mainly be developing youth through the system so transfers incomming
will be few but I'll be looking for him to negotiate a good price for the outgoing players.

We are a little understaffed on the training ground though. I'll be looking to bring in a new
Attacking coach and Shooting coach. As Assistant coaches, I'll be telling Michael Pavon and
Johan Radet to take two or three catagorees each to lessen the workload.

Cheers mate. I don't do many jounreyman saves. I'm usually a one-club-man but I decided to try somethign I'm not familiar now that I'm in that post-season FM blues I hate signing 5-6 wonderkids and then just blitzing the league. I've always been one to build from within and slowly grow so I can be consistent when I start t win things.

I know, I couldn't believe when they offered me th job. They're not the side they used to be though so I'm not surprised a mid-table finish is expected. They've very good facilities so I may be able to bag some great players on a bosman to see us through a promotion charge.

I've had an extremely difficult start to management. The squad moral is shot to shit

I got my first win in the league and it came at the perfect time. I sent the players
off to their winter break in high spirits. I sceduled a mid-season friendly before the
league started up agian to try boost moral. A 6-0 win certain helped as I've managed
to curb the slump and started getting points on the board.

Grégory Berthier and Livio Nabab have really found their rhythm out wide. I've been
struggling up front and scoring goals has been an issue; scoring only 7 goals in 10
games. So I've looked to Real Madrid's Reserve side and brought in Raúl De Tomás
    on loan.

6 goals and 4 assists so far this season in his domestic league is a decent return
for the Spaniard so I'll be hoping he can have a strong second half of the season
with us an grab the goals that move us up the league table.

You win some, you loose some. For us, these wins are massive!

We're still dangerously close to the drop zone having played a game more than the
team beneath us but we've got a 5pt cushion over 19th and 20th place so a few
wins and we'll be safe. We're 2 wins from 8th place though so that shows just how
open the table is. We're still on course for my season objective; if results go our way.

Reasons why I think this kid is special!

    1. At 15 years of age, he has all the time in the world to develop.
    2. He has great mental stats for such a young player.
    3. The kid is a local boy; he could be a local hero!

Papa Bebou has great work rate, he's brave and is determined... He'll be 1st
team before long! Fact!!!! This is exactly the kind of midfielder I like to have
at my clubs. Good passing and first tough, he's got pace and stamina. I'll have
to work on his physicals to make sure he can battle in the middle of the park.
I actually think he could be a French international if develops.

  45. wow, what an intake! Don't think i've ever seen that many players with such great potential, for me there's normally only 2 or 3 that have more than 3 star potential Important that Willy Colas already has a good rushing out attribute as 'keepers with poor rushing out can be frustrating to watch as they get it wrong so often when judging whether to come out to get the ball -.- If Colas can improve his aerial ability with that 5ft 10" height then he'll be a very good goalie!

I can imagine a few of those players sneakily developing right under your nose! Long term future is looking good

I can imagine a few of those players sneakily developing right under your nose! Long term future is looking good
I'm a second division club though so the PA's will look huge. I'm sure most of them wouldn't get onto Championship side when fully developed... though French youth intakes have a habit of producing a lot of wonderkids so I've my fingers crossed. I'd day Colas will finish out about 6'0" since he's only 15: plenty of time to grow up

Agreed, these are the most interesting stories, even if they get relegated

Aye. players are like children: They either grow up or they get released back into the wild.

I sincerely doubt I'll keep my job at Auxerre if I get the relegated
