What If: Moyes Returned to Everton

What If: Moyes Returned to Everton

A football manager simulation to investigate what would happen if David Moyes did indeed return to fill the vacant manager position at Everton Football Club. The database being used also has a wealthy version of Everton to replicate the real-life shareholder deal involving Farhad Moshiri.

    Everton Hire Moyes

Everton have rolled back the years to hire David Moyes on a five year contract. Moyes had previously been unemployed after being fired from his last two managing jobs. Moyes now has the chance to go on better with Everton after the increase in finance since he left the club three years ago.

The first transfer window was surprisingly quiet and saw only one permanent signing being made by Moyes. A £12 million deal for Lazio's Lulic.

    End of January Update

Finally Everton spent some serious money with the most expensive signing being West Brom's Berahino in a £20 million move. Everton were sitting 6th place in the league by the end of January and things were looking promising for a Europa League or even a Champions League place.

    End of Season Update

What a season for Moyes' Everton as the club finish 5th in the league. They have sealed a Europa League spot while also finishing above fierce derby rivals Liverpool. Everton also had a strong showing in the FA Cup before finally being knocked out in the quarter-finals of the competition. Moyes can now look to next season as he looks to strengthen the squad even more and look forward to some European football.... Right?

    Disaster Strikes

Disaster has struck at Everton as finance reports show they are to fail the Financial Fair Play rule, meaning the club will be banned from European competition for one season. It comes as a massive blow to Everton after their most impressive season in recent times. Will the club be able to attract the star players it wants, or will it be more of a task to hang on to the star players they currently have?

    December 3rd 2016 - 17 months since Moyes was re-hired

What If: Moyes Returned to Everton-screen-shot-2016-05-30-14.30.55.png

Fast forward 4 months into the second season, and Everton have sacked David Moyes after a run of bad results leaving Everton in 15th place in the league. Moyes' last game in charge saw his team lose 3-0 to West Ham. Everton didn't spend a single penny in pre-season, instead selling star player Lukaku for £38 million to Chelsea, perhaps understandably after failing the financial fair play rule the previous season and costing the team a place in Europe.

    Life After Moyes (again)

Two weeks after sacking Moyes, Everton hired Aitor Karanka on a three year contract, who guided them away from the bottom of the table to a 9th place finish. No further signings were made this season, perhaps with no budget being set after the disaster of failing the FFP rule.

    Conclusion

This simulation brought something I didn't take into account when discussing Everton's recent investment with others. How will they cope with Financial Fair Play if they do indeed start spending the cash? The stadium they currently have holds them back financially, so they'd have to build a new one, meaning spending even more money. The club are not allowed to make a loss over £15 million by the premier league, and are not allowed to lose over £6 million if they want to compete in Europe. Maybe the potential sale of Lukaku for £40 million plus in real life may not be a bad thing after all for Everton, and could even be seen as a blessing in disguise.

These are all key points that the people in charge need to consider when moving forward with Everton. Thanks for reading and feel free to leave comments and criticism!

Just a note, investment in stadiums, training facilities, youth development is not calculated in FFP break even costs. It's to encourage clubs to invest in the infrastructure rather than wages. That's UEFA's official stance. Weather it's in the game or not I'm not sure.

I wasn't aware of this, but good to know.

  4. Good stuff mate, only thing I'd suggest is to put this kind of thing in the Stories section instead in future! A shame it didn't last too long either - are you going to do another one?

Yeah I quite enjoyed doing this one mate. Got a few others in mind, would also be interested in other peoples ideas/requests.

I'll put them in the Stories section from now on!

Interesting mate! Let us know how he gets on.

  8. On my save he may not be the savior of Los Colchoneros, but he seems to be doing a job at my beloved Milan.
