  1. Clube Atlético Mineiro- New Era

Hello FM members, I'm going to start a long term story and what better time to do it as FM 17 has been released. My story will be in South America, where I tend to enjoy most of my FM playing time. The club that I picked is a club that I support since I was born. In this story, there will be many goals that I want to achieve with this club and I will write them in the following post after this.

If you recall my previous stories, I tend to post game to game but for this story I will do a monthly update with the exception for big games/ finals and player transfer. The story will begin on January 2016 as the competition in real life as not been finish.

Hope you will enjoy and prepare for a long post.

Clube Atlético Mineiro, commonly known "Atlético" and nicknamed as Galo (Rooster), is a Brazilian multisport club based in Lourdes, a bairro nobre (noble/high class neighborhood) in the city of Belo Horizonte. Although they compete in a number of different sports, Atlético is mostly known for its football team. It plays in the Campeonato Mineiro, the State of Minas Gerais's premier state league, as well as the Brasileirão, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system.

The club was founded on March 25, 1908 by 22 Belorizontino students, being led by Margival Mendes Leal and Mário Toledo as a response to the social discrimination practiced by many clubs elsewhere in Brazil. Despite being founded by upper class founders, the club opened its doors to everyone regardless of social class, quickly establishing itself as a "people's club". As a result, the club has the most supporters in the city and the largest supporters in the state. Atlético is also the oldest club of Belo Horizonte. Atlético play their home games at the Estádio Independência, better known as the Independência, which currently holds up to 23,018 spectators. Atlético's regular kit is black and white striped shirts, with black shorts, accompanied by white socks.

Atlético Mineiro is one of Brazil's most successful clubs, having won the Brasileirão in 1971, while also finishing runners-up on five occasions. They have won the Campeonato Mineiro 43 times, being the record-holders as the most successful club in that competition. Atlético is also the best performing club of the Copa CONMEBOL (now Copa Sudamericana) winning in 1992 and 1997 and finalists in 1995. In 2005, they were relegated to the 2nd Division for the first time in club history but returned one season later after winning the 2nd Division. They also won the Copa Libertadores in 2013 with a star-laden squad featured players such as Bernard, Diego Tardelli, Jô, Victor and Ronaldinho, and became the 10th Brazilian club to win it. Recently in 2014, the club has won its first Recopa Sudamericana and its first Copa do Brasil.

Some of Atlético biggest highlights was a 1950 tour across Europe which the club faced 10 European teams with the record of 6 wins, 2 loss and 2 ties, winning such as TSV 1860 Munchen, Hamburger SV and RSC Anderlecht; thus winning the title Campeão do Gelo (Ice Champion). In 1969, the club beat the Brazilian National Team, the same squad that ended up winning the 1970 World Cup, won 2-1. The 1970s-80s, the club had one of the greatest squad in Brazil thus having the best record in the Brazilian Championship in (77, 80, 83, 85) but due to political and arbitration scandals prevented Atlético to win.

They also have many key and famous players that played in Brazil's squads such as Dario, Reinaldo, Luizinho, Toninho Cerezo, Éder, Elzo, Cláudio Taffarel, Gilberto Silva, Diego Alves, Diego Tardelli, Ronaldinho, Jô, Victor, and Bernard.

The club plays at Estádio Independência, which is owned by America Mineiro and has the capacity of 23,000.

  7. Preseason 2016

The 2016 Preseason for Atlético Mineiro featured 5 matches which included a tour across Asia. This preseason allowed us to see the strengths and weakness of the club. During the games, I tested out the 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 formations.

    Here are the results:

We started off rusty as the players were just getting back to playing after their vacation. La U scored the first goal but Maicosuel and Juan Cazares scored 2 goals in a minute give us control of the rest of the game and the eventual win.

We made our first stop in Changchun, China to kick off our Asian tour. Changchun Yatai wasn't any trouble for us as we dominated the game so it was a perfect opportunity to see what the reserves and youth could do. Clayton, Maicosuel and Yago scored for us.

Ehime Football Club x Clube Atlético Mineiro

Our second stop was in Matsuyama, Japan as we faced J2 side Ehime FC. Again another side that wouldn't give us any trouble expect for the only shot on target Ehime had and they scored. We used a mix of first team and bench players of the match. Robinho scored both goals.

Fagiano Okayama x Clube Atlético Mineiro

Our third stop was in Okayama, Japan where we faced another J2 side. Fagiano played more defensively compared to the last two opponents but our side were the superior ones. Juan Cazares got a brace and Clayton added one in.

Our final stop was in Matsumoto, Japan where we faced recently relegated Yamaga. The was really easy as Yamaga didn't have any real opportunities. Fred scored twice and Luan scored the other.

The first ever edition of Primeira Liga or also known as Copa Sul-Minas-Rio (South-Minas-Rio Cup) will be played this year and the group stage was announced. The competition was founded in 2015 by clubs that are unhappy with the state championships and their low attendances and revenues. The first edition will be played in 2016. The club competition contested between the clubs from Rio de Janeiro (2), Rio Grande do Sul (2), Parana (2), Minas Gerais (3), and Santa Catarina (3). This competition is similar to the Copa do Nordeste.

The rule on team that qualify to this competition is unclear but many suggest that finalist from Campeonato Carioca, Campeonato, Campeonato Gaucho, and Campeonato Paranaense; the top 3 finish in Campeonato Mineiro and Campeonato Catarinense. Also its suggested that the club that are participating in Copa Libertadores will not be in this competition.

The competition consist of 3 groups. The winner of the group qualify to the Knockout Stage with the best 2nd placed club joining them. Each club will face each other in the group only once.

For the first ever edition, Atlético Mineiro was placed in Group A with Clube Atlético Paranaense, Avaí Futebol Clube, and their interstate rivals Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.

    State Championships Brief Overview

State football leagues in Brazil are football leagues competed in each of the 26 states of Brazil and in the Federal District. Due to their long tradition, they are highly regarded, and are almost as important as the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Historically, because of economical or geographical issues, the long distances between important cities of the country made the Brazilian people develop a strong competitive culture within the states. So, each Brazilian state has its own state championship. As of recently, most of the state championships start in January/February and conclude in early May.

Due to these competitions, some matches between rival clubs of the same state or city have a similar or bigger importance than an interstate match between two important clubs. Some examples are Flamengo-Fluminense (Fla-Flu), in Rio de Janeiro; Corinthians-Palmeiras and Santos-Sao Paulo (San-São) in São Paulo; Atlético-Cruzeiro in Minas Gerais; Naútico-Sport in Pernambuco; Gremio-Internacional (Gre–Nal) in Rio Grande do Sul; Atletico PR-Coritiba (Atle-Tiba) in Paraná; Bahia-Vitoria (Ba-Vi) in Bahia etc. The Campeonato Paulista, which started in 1902, is the oldest football competition in Brazil.

The state champions and, in some states, the runners-up, are automatically qualified to play in the following year's Copa do Brasil. Also, the best placed clubs of each state which are not competing the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Série B or Série C qualify to the same year's Série D.

Since Atletico Mineiro resides in Minas Gerais, we will playing in Campeonato Mineiro.

Campeonato Mineiro is the state football league of the state of Minas Gerais and is controlled by the Minas Gerais Football Federation FMF (Federação Mineira de Futebol).

The history of Campeonato Mineiro can be divided into two parts: before and after the construction of the Mineirão, in September 1966. The Mineirão is the biggest soccer stadium of Minas Gerais and it is located in Minas Gerais' state capital, Belo Horizonte. Before the stadium's inauguration América Mineiro and Atlético Mineiro were the most successful teams in the state, but after the construction of the Mineirão, known as the "Era Mineirão" ("Mineirão Era"), another team from the capital, Cruzeiro, also gained prominence. Atlético Mineiro is the most successful team in the competition, having won 43 championships as of 2015.

Many of the best players in Brazilian football were first seen in the Campeonato Mineiro, players like Reinaldo, Cerezo, Éder, Ronaldo, Dario and Tostão had their professional football debut in the competition.

There are 12 teams that compete in a single round fixture so after the 11 games are played, the top 4 teams qualify to the knockout stage. The knockout stage is seeded by 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd. The only difference about this knockout phase is that there are no away goals and extra time. If after both legs the score ends in a tie, teams that finish higher in the standing will either qualify to the finals or win the title (if in finals). Also the bottom 2 team are relegated to Mineiro 2nd Division.

The media predicted us to win the competition for the record 44th time by giving us the 6-1 odds

I decided not bring anyone to the club as I am feeling very confident with this side at the moment. I loaned out 5 players including 3rd RB option Carlos Cesar.

Adson is going to Nacional FC for six months. The 18 years old is currently one of the club top prospect will get the chance play some first team time in Brasileiro Serie D.

Marco Tulio is joining Inter de Lages for six months. Potentially to became a quality player of the club, the 17 years old attacking midfielder will get his first team minutes in Serie D.

Carlos Cesar is joining Turkish side's Istanbul Basaksehir for the entire Brazilian season. Being the 3rd option as a RB, Carlos Cesar won't be see a lot of game time with the club so joining the Super Lig is a great opportunity to impress me.

Ralph is joining Espirito Santos FC for six months. The 17 years old midfielder will take his talents to Serie D to gain some valuable game time.

Alerrandro is Inter de Lages for six months. He has potential to be the key striker of the club in the future so first team minutes will be crucial for him during his loan spell.

What a win against our hated rival! We kicked off the Primeira Liga campaign in style. Super Sub Lucas Pratto scored a hat-trick in 4 minutes inlcuding taking advantage of the keeper miss pass to chip it over. Flamengo scored the first goal of the game before Fred tied it with a penalty shot and Robinho scored the 5th goal to seal the deal.

He will make $800K a year and will have a rotational role.

Jesus Datolo joined Atletico Mineiro in August 2013 after a 1 year stint with Internacional. Atletico Mineiro decided to bring back one of their most iconic players to see out his career out. He joining us on free transfer after being released by Fluminense in September of 2015. He signed a two year deal that will expire on December 2017 and play a backup role with the club. The soon to be 36 years-old, his attributes are on a decline but the knowledge and his club status will be beneficial to the young players.

This is Ronaldinho 2nd stint with the club. In June 2012, he left Flamengo after four month unpaid wages and join the Atletico Mineiro four days later. During his two and a half years, he helped the club win their ever Copa Libertadores title in 2013, Campeonato Mineiro in 2013, and Recopa in 2014. He also led the club to a 2nd place finish in Campeonato Brasileiro in 2012 and 3rd place finish in Club World Cup. Ronaldinho won the Brasileiro Player of the Year in 2012, Copa Libertadores Best Player in 2013 and South American Footballer of the Year in 2013.

Four Players left the club on loan during the month.

Fabio joined our affiliate Ferroviaria in a 6 months loan deal. The future key striker of the club will get important first team minutes while they play Campeonato Paulista.

Alex Silva joined Turkish side Trabzonspor in a 6 month loan deal. Alex Silva has the potential to replace Marcos Rocha or Patric in the future but as of right now, playing in the Turkish league is his best option.

Cesar has joined our affiliate Ferroviaria in a 6 months loan deal. Like Alex Silva, Cesar can potentially be better than Fabio Santos on the Leftback, so playing in a competitive Campeonato Paulista will help him.

Thiago Valle joined Linense for six months. The young keeper will will get his playing time in Campeonato Paulista.

The teams looks like their hitting the right notes in recent games. Another victim in Uberlandia as we easily defeated them 8-0. We also had our best game defensively as they did not have a shot recored. Clayton is Atletico's fourth straight hat-trick hero. I gave our 18-years-old keeper, Cleiton his ever first senior side start even though his didn't do much. Carlos Eduardo scored in his second straight game but didn't see the half time whistle as he was forced to go out with another injury. Lucas Pratto was the saviour today against Atletico Paranaense as we are 2 wins of 2 in Primeira Liga. Pratto scored by a penalty after he was taken down by Leo Simas. Marcos Rocha made his return to the club after suffering an injury during the preseason and was on for 15 minutes. With that win, its put us on top alone with 6 points with one game to go.

Jesiel was loaned to Vila Nova from Goia until the end of the season. Jesiel played a couple games for us this year but won't be able to get enough game time with Leonardo Silva, Frickson Erazo, Ronaldo, Edcarlos and Gabriel all fighting for game time. Playing in Campeonato Goiano and in Brasilerio Serie B will better a good for him.

Great display today against URT as we convincingly won 4-0 thanks to two goals by Argentines Lucas Pratto and Jesus Datolo including a well taken freekick. We limited URT to only 1 shot which was not on target. With the win, we are still behind Cruzeiro for home advantage.

The first Classico Mineiro derby of the year has been played and we came out victorious. Goals came from our defence as Fabio Santos and Frickson Erazo both scored headers to seal of the victory in the final 10 minutes of the game. Rafael Carioca will miss the next Campeonato Mineiro match after collecting his third yellow. Who says that Defence doesn't win games. Also with that win, level Cruzeiro and surprisingly Tombense in points but had ahead due to our massive goal differential.

The first 20 minutes of the game felt like everything was going to go wrong with early goal conceded and red card by Jesiel but a Ronaldinho-inspired performance made everything better. The man that announced his retirement scored a hat-trick. Hyuri scored two goals including a stunning volley outside the box and Clayton added the other goal. With the win, we're in 1st alone after both Tombense and Cruzeiro drew against each other.

Coming from the finals against Internacional, I decided to rest up my starting XI and it had its good and bad. The good thing was that we won 3-0 and qualified to the Semifinals of Campeonato Mineiro. The bad was that Yago got the straight red after a horrific tackle and both Ronaldinho and Juan Cazares were forced to come out due to injury. Goals were scored by Edcarlos, Carlos Eduardo, and Leandro Donizete.

Just a week after winning the Primeira Liga, our backup keeper has told me that he wants to leave the club after achieving everything possible here in Atletico Mineiro. Not everything really; We still haven't won the biggest prize since 1971: Campeonato Brasileiro.

I ask him if he wanted to stay for just one more season. But craving to win different titles in his career, he said that if we don't win Campeonato Mineiro, Copa do Brasil or Campeonato Brasileiro, he will want a transfer.

    Fair enough.

Atletico Mineiro and Leonardo Silva have announced that they have reach an agreement to extend his stay until the December 2017 due to his passion with the club. At the age of 36, Leonardo Silva doesn't have a lot of time left to play but he still is one of the best CB in the club. Even though the salary is a bit high, his experience will be beneficial to the youngster Jesiel and Gabriel. The one year extension will help us prepare to replace Silva if he decide to retire.

Leonardo Silva joined Atletico Mineiro in 2011 after leaving Cruzeiro on free transfer. He helped win the Copa Libertadores in 2013 after scoring the tying the game in the 88th minute and scoring the winning penalty. He also helped win Campeonato Mineiro in 2012, 2013, and 2015, Recopa in 2014 and Copa do Brasil in 2014. He led Atletico Mineiro to two 2nd place finishes in Campeonato Brasileiro in 2012 and 2015.

Juninho joined our affiliation Ferroviaria on loan until the end of the season. Having recently joined Atletico Mineiro from youth squad to the main squad, playing time is very important as he has the potential to be key member in the future.

Matheus Stockl will being Juninho at Ferroviaria until the end of the season. Like Juninho, he has the to be a quality member and playing time will be good for him.

At the top of the Brazilian football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B.

Due to historical peculiarities and the large geographical size of the country, Brazil has a relatively short history of nationwide football competitions. Only in 1959, the need to appoint a Brazilian representative to the first edition of the Copa Libertadores was a nationwide tournament created, Taça Brasil. In 1967, the Torneio Rio-São Paulo was expanded to include teams from other states, becoming the Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, which was also considered a national tournament. The first Campeonato Brasileiro with that name was held in 1971.

The Campeonato Brasileiro is one of the strongest leagues in the world; it contains the most club world champions titles, with 10 championships won among six clubs, and the second-most Copa Libertadores titles, with 17 titles won among 10 clubs.

Every year at least 12 teams are favourite to win compared to the English league 5 teams (Man United, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea), Spanish league 2 teams (Real Madrid and Barcelona), Italian 4 teams (Juve, Inter, AC Milan and Roma) and German 1 team (Bayern). The usual teams to that are favourite to win is Atletico Mineiro, Cruzeiro, Santos, Palmerias, Sao Paulo, Corinthians, Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo, Vasco, Gremio, and Internacional. But with Vasco is the 2nd division and Sport Recife becoming a force, the league is more competitive than ever.

The Campeonato Brasileiro is the most-watched football league in the Americas and one of the world's most exposed, broadcast in 155 nations. It is also one of the world's richest championships, ranked as the sixth most valuable with a worth of over US$1.43 billion, generating an annual turnover of over US$1.17 billion in 2012.

Since 1959, a total of 156 clubs have played in the Campeonato Brasileiro. 17 clubs have been crowned Brazilian football champions, 12 of which have won the title more than once. Santos and Palmeiras are the most successful clubs of the Campeonato Brasileiro, having won the competition eight times each, followed by São Paulo and Corinthians with six titles each. Santos' "Os Santásticos", considered by some the best Brazilian club team of all times, won five consecutive titles between 1961 and 1965, a feat that remains unequaled until today. The State of São Paulo is the most successful state, amassing 28 titles among five clubs. The reigning Brazilian champions are Corinthians, who won their sixth title during the 2015 season.

Starting from this years competition, there are new rules in how Brazilians clubs qualify in South American competitions. 1st to 5th qualify to the Copa Libertadores Group Stage while 6th to 8th enters the Copa Libertadores preliminary rounds. 9th-14th qualifies to Copa Sudamericana. (Pending)

Bottom four clubs will be relegated to the 2nd Division.

Bad news for us as we lose our starting goalkeeper Victor after suffering an injury during a training session, just days after Atletico Mineiro played their 2nd game in Campeonato Mineiro.

The backup keeper Giovanni will take his place and our promising youngster Uilson will back him up.

The first game of Campeonato Brasileiro has been played and it was a loss. After winning Campeonato Mineiro, I chose to rest my starting eleven. I chose wrong. Ponte Preta is consider the weak club in this competition but they out classed us. To make it even wrong, Ronaldo got ejected from the game and both Jesus Datolo and Leonan got injured.

Our first big test in this competition has been played and we came out as the winner. Much better game compared to the previous game. Lucas Pratto scored two goals today and Leandro Donizete scored one 3 minutes into the game.

Atletico Mineiro players were called into the Team of the Week after this game.

Another huge game, this time against the 8-time winner Palmeiras. Fernando Prass had a huge game for Palmeiras including stopping a Lucas Pratto's penalty attempt. Fred was the hero today as he came on the 2nd half and scored a couple of minutes later. This was also the first game without Victor due to injury.

Atletico Mineiro player were called into the Team of the Week after this game.

Our 3rd big game in a row and this time against our rival. Lucas Pratto saved us today after scoring on a miss penalty rebound. Our goalkeeper crisis continues as Giovanni is out for 2 weeks after injuring his wrist in a save attempt. Good news that with the win, we are in first place, tied with our rival.

Disappointing result against Gremio today. We were the better team but our attack couldn't get pass through Marcelo Grohe. Uilson had his first ever start in Campeonato Brasileiro and had a great game including saving a penalty.

Victor is still out for two more months with a hip injury. Our backup Giovanni will hopefully return next game against Chapecoense. Our younger Filipinho is still out for two more weeks and will return to the U20 side.
