At the beginning of every season, there are the exit trials. These are for the players not fortunate enough to make it at the highest level, or for ones missed in the system. The exit trials of 2016 were no different. A large cast list was set to make an appearance. What was different however, was the attendance of FM Base manager David Kerry. Ordinarily, the trials were reserved for teams in the upper echelons of English football, not an upstart club from the middle of London.

The opportunity being offered though was a unique one - a guaranteed contract until 2030 for all those lucky enough to sign. The previous squad had all left at the end of the promotion winning season; a protest at what they perceived as a lack of support from the fans. They left in search of a club that would appreciate and nurture them. As the days leading up to the trials progressed, numerous applicants registered their interest. In the end, the list was whittled down to 41.

Kerry was looking for a 25 man squad, so competition was fierce. Come the end of the 30th June 2016, he had his men. FM Base FC, who were to play in the Vanarama South in the upcoming season had a squad again. The following were the chosen few:

    GK - Michael Dale (1)
    GK - Kristoffer Lippopodopolis (N/A)
    RB - The Treble (18)
    RB - Wikiwiki (33)
    CB - Craig Lowerson (5)
    CB - Gavin Jameson (15)
    CB - Charlie Bond (90)
    CB - Alex Harris (24)
    LB - Nate Naterr (2)
    LB - Bert Bathernon (3)
    CM - God Fish (20)
    CM - DarnHo ( 6 )
    CM - Shane Tracz (26)
    CM - Sam Birch (8)
CM - Jai Normus Willie (13)
    RW - Jorge Pinto-Murley (69)
    RW - Fabio Silva (92)
    AMC - Matthew Hawkins (14)
    AMC - Andreas Dahnert (23)
    LW - Jason Jablonski (7)
    LW - Allan Telstar (98)
    ST - Odd Willy-Notthatbright (16)
    ST - Napoleon Urquidi (9)
    ST - Alarcon (10)
    ST - Ben Dover (11)

You do have a club, hoping to get all 41 players up tonight, but I'm pushing time a little. And who knows, you may make the move to FM Base FC in a future season, so I'll be updating on the other 16 players as well as the main squad.

  4. Who are FM Base FC?

Before we meet the players, we should meet the club. FM Base FC were founded by a group of gaming enthusiasts in 2010. They figured that they were masterminds on the computer, it should transfer to the real world. Even their kits were chosen based on the colours of the forum they frequented.

. Successive promotions saw the club rocket to the VNS, but the season prior was fraught with conflict. The playing staff completely resigned, citing severe pressure from the fans and a complete disconnect with the chairman. They went back to their pc's, leaving their club in danger. Kerry, the manager throughout this, stayed on purely because he was getting a qualification out of it. Plenty of loyalty there.

However, the club was also bought out that summer, with punters keen to make money swooping in on the chaos. A new chairman and a successful manager looked promising, and the club value largely reflects that at 95m.That said, Kerry remains on a tight budget, leading to the "contract for life" scheme that the club have now employed this summer only.

Sponsoring the club this season will be Vauxhall, who were the first to jump on the bandwagon of the contracts gimmick. It may be only for a pittance for the club, but any sponsor is good. Adidas will be providing the kits, fighting off New Balance for the contract.

The team play at The Base, a 6k all seater stadium that served its purpose superbly in the lower leagues. Built in 1995, and well maintained by its previous owners, a local rugby club, the team have played there since its inception in 2010. There are rumours of a potential new stadium down the line, but results need to be seen first.

I was just about to tell you what a great job you were doing too...... admittedly it was a feeble attempt to get myself off the bench, but still

How will attribute masking affect the guys who did not make it into FM base though? Will you still be able to follow their progress properly?

It meant I couldn't see their full attributes, so I only had a value range for each stat. If they were to move to a country I couldn't scout, I'd be completely stumped. Just made it slightly less fun for those 16.

Few technical hitches, it'll be fine! Story of my life, fine when I get going, it's the getting going thats the problem!

It also puts Choko's comment out of context now as well, so that'll amuse me for a little while.

  12. None get left behind..

One of the stipulations made from the list of 41 selected by Kerry for his shortlist was that they were the only ones that could sign for FM Base whilst under his management. Each of the 16 was shortlisted and emailed, informing them of this situation, and should the opportunity arise; they would be able to pull on the navy blue of FM Base. Following the exit trials, the players dispersed among the VNN/VNS clubs to ply their trade; hoping that a new contract in the top leagues, or joining FM Base, would become a reality.

He's got to get past Batheron first, and believe me that will be difficult Batheron is technically superior and will be less likely to spend time on the sideline suspended.

  33. Just a brief update on how updates are going to work - for the first couple of seasons, it'll be two months in an update hopefully, where I'll cover results, and keep you up to date on all the players. With international call ups, this should mean I actually have matches to keep you up to date on.

Actual player screenshots will occur on the 10th June every year. Otherwise uploading 41 screenshots minimum every month may take a while...

I would imagine they'll be more frequent during the week if anything. I like to try play some of the longer games like Civ VI or Motorsport Manager over the weekend, so FM can take a back seat occasionally. That and I have to occasionally venture into the outside world and be social as well...

Having said that, every time I hit the magic two month marker, I'll try get the update done that same day.

  38. And so it begins...

Technically here is a 3 month update, but we'll ignore the semantics for now. Pre-season was hardly worth writing home about anyway, with me attempting to find a suitable combination, before sulking and passing it over to Cornelius Jol to deal with.

My priority was the opening day at home to Gosport. Much like Bonaparte, Urquidi was the early trail-blazer, scoring the opening goal of the season for us. Telstar was another bright spark at the start of the season, with 2 goals in 2 games before picking up an injury. Notthatbright was a handy partner to Urquidi up top, but again injuries took effect as he missed 4 weeks.

With three clean sheets in a row, the defeat to Hampton in the 94th minute was extremely disappointing, Lowerson doing a fair imitation of Gerrard against Uruguay. We recovered though, scoring 15 in the next 3 matches. Dahnert made use of his training as a striker to come off the bench and score a hattrick against Hemel, in our first meeting with Hemel captain Steo.

International call ups as expected caused postponements, and that might cause an issue down the line, but for now, we dealt with it well. A few players have expressed concerns on playing time, but as explained to them, they played badly last time out, so they had to sit out for a bit. It's kept them amused for now.

As you would expect at this early stage, we sit pretty at the top of the table. The player ratings are dominated by us, but Itamar Gissin also features on the assists chart. Meanwhile, East Thurrock are benefitting from USA international Nate Kronos up top - more on that next month.

Our fellow players in the north are also getting in some good game time. Lewis is leading the midfield very handily at Telford, whilst Talent and Scully have formed a solid defensive pairing for Altrincham after a shaky start. DanW has also impressed at Gloucester, helping them to just outside the playoffs.

In terms of our players, there are a couple of standouts. Urquidi has impressed alongside Alarcon, and recently celebrated joining up with the Mexico full squad for the first time. Charlie Bond has been a rock at the back, with Lowerson, Harris or Jameson generally joining him. Surprise performer for me has been Silva, who came through a rocky pre-season to shine so far. So far he's kept Murley out the team, although he has also impressed when called upon.

The two CAM's have suffered a bit as a result of moving to a 4-4-2 recently, but both have appeared in more forward roles in recent times. Hawkins is now also looking at dropping out to the wing as well to provide cover and work more opportunities - especially with Telstars ability to pick up minor niggles and take an extra day or two to recover from them.

The keeper battle is fierce, with both getting opportunities. Both have picked up four clean sheets so far, with Dale picking up a solitary assist. Meanwhile, Lippopodopolis has come to the revelation that he'd be good enough for England... before immediately joining up with Greece. Go figure.

Lastly, captain Darnho has led well from the centre, and is often well involved playing the BBM role in the middle. The other four midfielders are largely jostling for position next to him, but there is yet to be a standout candidate in that role.

Maybe there needs to be an experimental formation incorporating 2 left backs? Fit them both in!

  41. Odd-Willy with an overall at 8.67 is impressive:-) Needs more playing time ;-)

  44. Looks like ive been solid in the games ive played.
But solid doesnt get your name first on the team sheet,
Hopefully i can stay consistent and put in some more impressive displays.

  45. Solid stats from Harris there.
Firs defender with a goal as well so not bad at all
Build from my rotational status to a solid starter

At the moment they seem to be sharing the position although Bert is playing better. However, if they do away with the left midfielder I'm sure two LB's can be accommodated after all Bathernon is more of a wingback than an out and out LB.

  47. just notice Norfolkan Chance has a defensive partner in big Kong Nasse. Dynamic duo?

  48. Grrrr, seems like I'm the injury prone player in this one?

  49. Great work so far mate

  50. Hope I can score a a few more to claim a place up top! Great work so far
