Lokeren - well that was a disappointing league debut. Hoek gets his season up and running in terms of goals, but overall, nothing to be happy about there. Having tinkered with the tactics at half time to allow some more creative freedom going forward, it also left us exposed at the back which aided their goal.

Genk - I’ll take the three points, and the winning goal was a long time coming, but again, another unconvincing performance. Lots of passes, lots of possession but very little in terms of a cutting edge and that looks like it’s the thing to work on.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-ferrari-signing.jpg

The 18year old Italian poacher signs as a great prospect and goes straight into the first team to rotate with Toussaint. Acquah, the oldest of the front 4, and the player who offers least, is now free to go as he is largely surplus to requirements.

Mechelen - the tempo is increased, the players are instructed to exploit the flanks and to roam from position in an attempt to unsettle them. Ferrari starts and plays well as do Genghini and Astolfi as they shut down the midfield. Hoek is still our only goalscorer.

Acquah leaves for a fee of £4.4m.

Brugge - Brugge sit second currently. Cruz is given the RPM role as I think he can do a similar job to the one that Sanches did for me at Midtjylland. Boulanger is outstanding in defence and even gets to the other end to score a goal. We let ourselves down with the concession of a penalty and this was far from a fluent performance - I’m still finding my feet with this group.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-cl-draw.jpg - just ouch. Barcelona are the current holders having won the competition in consecutive seasons and Chelsea have made the quarter finals in 6 of the last 7 season.

The transfer window closes and no further serious business takes place - a number of players go out on loan for development purposes.

Post leads the way with a goal, assist and man of the match award. Hoek is still the main goal threat, although he isn’t being particularly well supported by either Toussaint or Ferrari at the moment. Slightly surprised to see the fullbacks with as good rating as they have, although Soares is good going forward.

Having bigged up LB Soares’ performances up last month, he now declares his intention to leave the club on a Bosman at the end of the season which is just plain rude. The search is now on for a replacement as we have no natural player to step up from the reserves.

Westerlo - Schreuder comes in for Soares and despite going down to 10 men after just 24 minutes, Hoek produces a moment of brilliance to give us the lead which we hold on to despite serious pressure late in the second half which, in part, explains Scasny’s MoM award.

Celtic - at home and, in theory, the easiest game of the group. Despite dominating, we allow Celtic to take the lead just before half-time. Toussaint finally gets his goal as he taps in an easy chance after good work from Cruz.

Zulte Waregem - Toussaint retains his place and 17 year old Moors makes his debut but neither have any impact whatsoever and that is a shockingly poor result.

Virton - a cup game, change of formation and an opportunity for the fringe players to play, although it’s something of a struggle as Ferrari tucks away a neat finish in the first half to record his first goal - disappointingly we couldn’t push on after that and only record the single goal. The most important thing is to progress.

OHL - the bottom team, and another change of formation to a christmas tree 4-3-2-1 to deal with injuries in the squad. We’re restored to full strength after the cup game. A horrible first half, in which we conceded a stupid goal necessitates several changes at halftime. Yildiz is on penalty duty and duly dispatches his just after haltime. Boulanger finally seals the win with fulltime looming. Again, another thoroughly unconvincing win, but 3 points.

Cruz’s upturn in form seems to coincide with his change to a roaming playmaker role. At the other end, 17 year old Moors has struggled but is only a back-up option although he sits high in the tackles per game stat, along with the other fullbacks. Hoek is still the only player really making in impact in the goals scored column.

Chelsea - they don’t have many weaknesses, but the one they did have was relatively slow defenders so the plan was to get Hoek to play on the shoulder and use his pace to get in behind. Unfortunately, the players who were meant to be giving him the service were crowded out first, in the middle of the pitch and then secondly, on the flanks. There were some good things - but the result was not one of them.

KV Hortrijk - First Cruz, then Chafai when he came on controlled the game in the middle, just ticking possession over. Hoek scored a screamer from 25 yards, then Ferrari beat the offside trap to slide in a one-on-one. The wing-backs are instructed to stay wider to offer another option and help see the game out.

Barcelona - We were undone by the one piece of world-class skill in the game as Meghni dribbles through 4 defenders before laying the ball on a plate for Valenzuela to finish from 6 yards. Despite the result, that was a pretty hard-fought game and it was just that one moment that made the difference.

Standard - I stick with the formation that held up against Barca and we record a deserved win, although the scoreline doesn’t do the performance justice. Hoek gets another, but the key players were the fullbacks, with Messan a particular threat.

We were a bit fortunate that Scasny saved the penalty conceded by Terbeshi, but that was a very good performance that takes us top of the league. Post & Genghini were dominant, won their tackles and headers and just kept the play ticking over without doing anything special.

Antwerp - A couple of players fail late fitness tests so Chafai, Moors and Toussaint come in but its an unfortunate Boulanger OG that prevents us from taking the 3 points. Toussaint scores, btu wastes countless opportunities as he shoots from 40 yards instead of playing the simple ball and the 2 defensive midfielders leave lots of space for the opposition to exploit as they both close down the same players and the ball - both need tweaking to be better.

After the last game, the two defensive roles in the middle of the pitch are changed to straightforward central midfielders. What was the Shadow-Striker role has been changed to a Trequartista, which is something of a gamble, but it’s worth the experiment.

Charleroi - A massive game against Barcelona is just around the corner, so it’s tempting to ring the personnel changes but only a couple are made in the end. It was a poacher and trequartista that led me to glory with Galatasaray and it looks like it could be the same here as Chafai gets his first of the season and Toussaint continues his good form from the AMC position with a goal and an assist.

This formation is causing some problems with my AMC roles as I only have 2 of them. A scour around the free transfer market brings Saint-Maximin to my attention. He was released by Man City for not being good enough but he looks like he can do a job for me.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-max-profile.jpg

Barcelona - Unsurprisingly, we’re massive underdogs as we sit without a win so far in the Champions League campaign. Maximin is thrown in at the deep end as he makes his debut. One of my more experienced campaigners; Messan has a shocker as he gives away a penalty and a short backpass is intercepted in the space of 3 minutes. The goal at the death is no less than they deserved.

Oostende - Hoek is given a rest as he’s been poor recently, but Ferrari’s chance to deputise only lasts 3 minutes as he’s brought off with an injury early on. Saint-Maximin retains his place and Moors, the young right back, starts. Hoek scores after coming on from another Cruz assist which is cancelled out by a worldy of a free-kick which flies into the top corner. I don’t quite know how we didn’t win that.

Ferrari suffers a torn achilles and misses 4-5 months.

Celtic - The wooden spoon game, neither team have won in the group yet. In truth we didn’t deserve to get anything out of this and Hoek’s goal was one of only 3 attempts on target. The gulf between our own league games and the step up in class to the European competition is evident….and painful.

Not that much to take pleasure from this month, but Cruz’s move to roaming playmaker and Toussaint to Trequartista has paid off with good performances and goals. Saint-Maximin hasn’t started his Anderlecht career as I would have hoped but Boulanger is leading the defence at the moment.

AA Gent - Mensah returns from injury and is cleared to play 45 minutes, so he starts for Saint-Maximin. An utterly uneventful, but solid, first half prompts a change of tactics, playing wider and looking to exploit the flanks which pays off as Saint-Maximin provides an assist from the wide position for Toussaint to notch his fourth of the season. The result helps to open a bit of a gap at the top of the league.

Chelsea - the changes implemented at halftime against Gent are retained against Chelsea in the final group game, with only pride to play for. Toussaint and Hoek combine again to secure the victory. The additional width created by Messan and Soares in the wingback positions caused all sorts of problems as we finally pick up a Champions League win which, I think, means progression to the knockout round of the European Cup.

Eupen - Bore draw - fustratingly, nothing to see here other than a load of yellow cards. Our inability to score more than one, or any, goal is proving a challenge at the moment.

Lierse - A cup game allows me to ring the changes and a number, though not all, of the fringe players are brought in as Toussaint scores the solitary goal in an unremarkable win.

Mouscron - we’re in desperate need of a decent, coherent, fluent win but it’s hampered by coming so soon after the extended cup game and a number of injuries, meaning replacements are in short supply. However, we do play well - Genghini misses a penalty but the rebound falls kindly, Hoek gets his goal and Terbeshi heads in late on. The possession hungry tactics were tweaked to get the ball forward quicker and to unsettle the opposition, which appears to have paid off.

Finishing third, courtesy of that last game win against Chelsea means progression to the knock-out stages of the UEFA cup and, whilst it’s not an easy draw, there were definitely tougher potential games.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-uefa-cup-draw.jpg

STVV - Another Toussaint goal, thankfully taking some of the burden off Hoek and a slightly fortunate own goal towards the ends ensures progression to the semi-finals.

Mensah signs a new contract to extend his stay for another couple of years.

Lokeren - Saint-Maximin announces himself with an outstanding goal and an assist for Hoek. Not exactly comfortable, but another vital 3 points in the league which puts us firmly in the driving seat, although there’s plenty of the season left to play yet.

Mechelen - The final game of the month, year and before the winter’s break sees Mechelen come to town. Hoek gets an easy goal, Schreuder provides an assist for Mensah that he can’t miss and Maximin scores a glorious third and his second PoM in 2 games. 16 year old striker Chaveau comes on for his second appearance in as many games to give Hoek a slight rest as Ferrari remains injured. A confident win which was a world away from the streaky 1-0 wins at the beginning of the month.

Schreuder, Cruz and Saint-Maximin all had very good months, with Maximin in particular showing what he can do as he contributed with both goals and assists. My 4 defensive central midfielders; Genghini, Post (first choice) and Astolfi and De Decker all do the same sort of job; just ticking the play over but it’s not really reflected in the ratings here. If the opportunity to bring in a better midfielder, particularly ones with better tackling stats, I will take it.

17 year old Moors and 16 year old Chaveau are only really here as back-up, or for the experience this season so I'm not expecting much from them.

The transfer window opens and it could be busy. Athletic Madrid declare their interest in CB Terbeshi, rated at £15.5m. For that amount of money, it would not be the worst decision to let him go with adequate back-up in the reserves. 19 year old Ghanaian midfielder Samuel Boakye comes in for a fee of £8m. It’s a lot, but he’ll be in the team for some time and has some serious potential.

And then, just as things are starting to look good and building the squad, Genoa make an approach which I wasn’t expecting…

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-genoa-approach.jpg

…which I reject, although it does cause me to take a look at the other possible jobs available….

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-job-availability.jpg

...one of which is Roma, as their manager is under serious threat. Even having only been here a relativity short time, Roma would be too tempting to pass up the opportunity to apply if Alvini can’t turn it round.

Genk - Boakye is on international duty so can’t play, but Saint-Maximin makes the breakthrough late in a first half which we dominated. The second half was chalk, to the first half’s cheese, and it was like a different team came out at half-time as we conceded 3 without reply. Not quite sure what happened there.

Zulte Waregem - Toussaint has Cruz’s hard work to thank for his opener, before Hoek scores after a comedy of defensive errors. A good win that, partly, goes some way to wiping the Genk game from the memory.

OHL - a few changes are made to rotate the team and, hopefully, some fitness. An early goal helps us on his way, with Schreuder’s first of the season then a Post free-kick gives us a good base to build from. Pauwels, starting for Saint-Maximin tucks away a penalty to complete another nice result.

Boakye’s international performances and injuries mean he hasn’t featured for the team yet this term. Pauwels or Mensah could leave and, if good offers came in for either of Terbeshi or Bilek, then they could go as well as the youth academy has produced players who could step into their shoes.

Roma’s manager seems to have turned things around there, so it no longer looks like that job is going to become available anytime soon.

The transfer window closes and, despite a number of players subject to transfer interest, only Wuytens, loans and a reserve player leave. Boakye is the sole incoming business, although Soares, my LB has declared his intention to leave at the end of the season so I will be looking to replace him.

KV Kortrijk - Amrani makes a rare start, Pauwels keeps his place and Astolfi comes in as well. It looked like this game was going to grind down to a goal-less draw until Maximin turned up with slightly more than 10 minutes left after making increasingly aggressive changes to try to force the win.

Standard - Moors has to play for the suspended Messan and a couple of other changes are made. In theory Standard should be one of our competitors for the title, but a less than stellar season so far, sees them sitting in fourth place. Soares provides 3 assists, Moors is outstanding and the fact that Toussaint and Maximin are taking the goalscoring burden off Hoek is the icing on the cake.

Both Toussaint and Genghini sign new long-term contracts which is good business, particularly Toussaint.

Antwerp - An unchanged team and Maximin and Hoek do the business in a relatively routine win.

Brugge - A number of changes are now needed as Toussaint, Cruz and Soares are lacking in full match fitness. Hoek does the business from 2 wide assists as we defeat the team in second place and consolidate the position at the top with a 13 point lead. That’s 1 goal conceded in the last 6 games with some outstanding performances along the way.

Charleroi - I have plenty of points in hand at the top of the league, so the entire first 11 are changed in preparation for the upcoming Ajax game. This means that Chaveau gets the chance to make his first start and lead the line and, finally, Boakye is in the line-up. It’s he who scores the equaliser with a clinical finish on his debut. We had enough chances to win the game, but couldn’t force the winner.

Ajax - back to full strength and we’ll see whether the Charleroi gamble has paid off. A very narrow win, with Cruz the game-winner in the end. We had enough chances to win the game and Ajax ran their luck a little bit, so it’s a bit disappointing to score just the one goal.

Oostende - only a couple of changes are made, so it’s a strong line-up. Boakye scores his second in as many games as we record a comfortable victory, in what was a potentially banana skin of a tie. Saint-Maximin provides 2 assists as he continues to prove what a find on a free transfer he was.

That win takes us, as the title holders, a ridiculous 13 points clear and, really, I’ve done very little to this team. It would appear we’re somewhere between being too good for this league, and not quite good enough to compete in Europe, although the next game will go some way to determining whether that’s the case or not.

Ajax - It’s a massive gamble to play defensively and rely on the first leg win, but a fine rearguard action pays off and to add to the positives, Toussaint even grabs a goal in very, very late injury time. Not a way of playing I’m particularly familiar with, and we’re not going to win the competition but progress is made and we’re through to the next round.

There are some very beatable teams left in the draw, so with a bit of luck…

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-euro-cup-draw.jpg

…another Dutch team, another home game first, but an eminently winnable game.

Saint-Maximin has been outstanding this month, as has Boakye who has scored in both the games he has appeared in. At the other end of the pitch Scasny kept 6 clean sheets this month and back-up keeper Amrani kept a clean sheet as well. Hoek is clearly the out and out goalscorer, but it’s good to see 15 different goalscorers and 12 different players providing assists.

23 year old Belgian International keeper John Ebem signs on a free transfer, giving us some very good strength in depth. My first choice keeper Scasny is currently wanted by a number of teams and valued at £7m which would be a great deal for a 32 year old.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-ebem-profile.jpg

AA Gent - a few players are lacking some match fitness, so some changes are made. All 3 goals were in the last 10 minutes in a game we could and should have won, not helped by the fact that Hoek was off his game and neither Pauwels or Boakye were able to provide any meaningful service to the front man. Only Toussaint, after his introduction, was able to provide any real moment of quality and that was the goal.

Westerlo - a win is needed after the Gent game although it’s a pretty dire first half. Some halftime changes are made and Saint-Maximin doesn’t take long to score from 25 yards at the beginning of the second half. Boakye, on for a disappointing Toussaint, finishes a fine move at the death. Another clean sheet for young keeper Amrani and Chaveau, who started, had enough chances to get his Anderlecht career underway.

Eupen - the perfect example of what happens when you don’t put away the (many, many…) chances you have. They only had one shot on target and the result was even worse when you consider Eupen played more than an hour with 10 men.

Feyenoord - a very similar opposition to us and the first leg at home. Another win where we should have scored more than just the one. Post fires in a fantastic free-kick from 25 yards but we failed to kick on after that goal. A tough second leg awaits.

Mouscron - 3 games in 5 days, with this being the least important of the lot, means wholesale changes and it was a gamble that backfired in spectacular style as the team sitting in 14th place spanks us.

That final league games means the league is split into 2 parts and, as the points are halved, our lead is reduced to just the 5 points.

Brugge - the first leg of the cup semi final is away and some key players are brought back although it doesn’t make much of a difference. A slightly more defensive outlook pays off as we prevent Brugge from scoring, but equally, can’t grab ourselves an away goal either.

Feyenoord - the second leg and we go on with a narrow 1 goal lead. A couple of tactical tweaks are made to attempt to make the most of the goal we have. Despite being our main goal threat, we struggle to get Hoek involved at all until he creates a bit of magic to provide the assist for Toussaint. The addition of Mensah for a disappointing Saint-Maximin pays off as he provides two assists for Hoek to round off the win and complete an outstanding second half.

    A much tougher challenge awaits…

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-euro-cup-draw.jpg

Brugge - A goal-less first leg means that a win is needed in this home leg, with the risk of away goals. We concede from a free-kick midway through the first half, I make immediate changes, though it doesn’t pay off and we spend the rest of the game playing catch up with the players taking increasingly desperate pot-shots. That was disappointing as, and I say it to the press, that was a winnable competition.

Ferrari is returning to fitness and he is a much better option than the youngster Chaveau who needs gametime, probably in a lower league. Schreuder continues to impress as do first choice centre-backs Terbeshi and Boulanger. Post has contributed with assists and goals (mostly direct freekicks) as has Mensah as back up to Maximin.

Zulte Waregem - Hoek scores an excellent first half hat-trick and the result would have been even more convincing had Genghini not missed a penalty. Cruz ran the midfield with 2 assists and Ferrari made a cameo return after his long injury lay-off.

Hoek’s goals in that game make it 20 for the season for him, breaking his own previous record and leading the league goalscorers as well.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-600-games.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-600-record.jpg

Although, despite this, I’m still a long way from being near the top of the list of managers with the most
    league wins:

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-league-win-summary.jpg

Standard - Hoek can’t continue his goalscoring exploits, but Maximin takes over and produces 2 moments of quality to seal the three points despite a late hiccup. Maximin, who know has 10 goals in 16 league appearances, was picked up on a free and is now worth £17.5m - the £30m release clause forced on me by his agent, is suddenly looking like not enough.

Lokeren - Another away game and the second in three games so it’s a slightly weaker team, with half an eye on the Tottenham game. We absolutely batter Lokeren but can’t get the goal. It’s telling that their keeper; Ebem, who I’ve already signed on a free transfer is MoM and has a great game.

Tottenham - I think it’s probably safe to say we’ve found our level and whilst a few players; Toussaint, Saint-Maximin and Hoek looked comfortable with the step up in opposition, we were soundly beaten, although the two goals in the last 3 minutes made the result look worse than I thought it was.

AA Gent - it takes longer than expected but Ferrari finally makes the breakthrough as he finishes off a fine flowing team move. The second from an own goal just about gives us a win we deserved.

Tottenham - an impossible task awaits as we try and overturn the 4 goal deficit. We dominated the first half in terms of chances and possession, but got undone by an unfortunate own goal. We had enough chances in the second half to score more than the one that we did, but in the end, that was what we had to make do with. Disappointing over the 2 legs, but that was a far tougher game than the ones that preceded it.

Progression to the quarter final is better than I could have anticipated, and we were lucky to even get here in any case as progress was only secured by the last game win in the Champions League group stage.

Brugge - a 10 point gap to Brugge in second place gives us some leeway, but I’d rather not have to eat into it. We just couldn’t get a kick for the first hour, so some significant changes are made, including bringing striker Ferrari, on for DM Genghini although to no avail.

Standard - another ridiculous fixture filled month comes to a close with the visit of the fifth placed team. Moors has a good game, providing the assist for Toussaint’s goal, but then makes an error letting a long ball go over his head which leaves their striker through for a one-on-one which he duly converts.

It’s turning into something of a stutter to the end of the season.

Cruz continues to justify his relatively high price tag and both Toussaint and Saint-Maximin have had good goal-scoring months as they both get into double figures. Again, De Decker and Astolfi have been disappointing in the games they have played and would be key candidates for replacing if the opportunities arise.

Zulte Waregem - Cruz has a shots-on-target percentage of just 30% and only 1 goal in 44 attempts so is instructed to shoot less. We’re one win away from the title. Worryingly, Hoek has another goal-less game and is replaced, but not before Genghini with a penalty and Toussaint twice give us the lead before getting pegged back. We had 4 clear cut chances and hit the woodwork twice, but couldn’t do enough to get the win.

Lokeren - We’re still one win from the title. Hoek, who has not scored in 8 games is dropped for Ferrari, but otherwise, it’s the strongest team possible. The team seem intend on sabotaging their own title chances as Terbeshi is sent off on 30 minutes for a straight red card challenge in an innocuous area of the pitch and they take full advantage of the extra man.

A shocker of a result and the end of season slump of 1 win in 6 games is starting to cause concern - our final day game against Brugge could turn into a winner takes all, which I’m desperate to avoid.

AA Gent - for the fourth game in a row, we go into the game knowing that a win will guarantee the title. Hoek is restored to the starting line-up and Bilek replaces the suspended Terbeshi. Hoek finally finds his shooting boots but we seemingly push the self destruct button again as Post gives away a needless penalty. This time however we regroup as Boulanger scores from a corner and Mensah completes the victory on the counter-attack as they push for an equaliser.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-double-win.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-manager-award.jpg

Brugge - at one stage, this looked like it was going to be a critical game, but with nothing riding on it a few rotational changes are made. Boakye, my Ghanaian wonderkid, drills in a wonderful goal from 25 yards to record the sole goal in a very tight fought victory. 17 year old fullback Moors caps off his debut season with a fine MoM performance.

Despite the league win, and the very good progress in the European Cup, the board hand me a miserly transfer budget of just £1.2m which isn’t great considering I definitely need a new LB and ideally 2 CMs and the transfer budget to retain is just 20%. A number of players are wanted so some money could be recouped this way, however this was the case last season and no-one actually moved.

Saint-Maximin was the performer of the season - not bad for a free transfer. Hoek was the goalscoring machine, and it showed how reliant we were on him when he was missing for parts of the season. Valuable contributions were made by Maximin and Toussaint. Cruz, in the roaming playmaker position leads the assists with the fullbacks, particularly on the left, adding to the numbers. Chafai, also brought in on a free would have made more appearances had Cruz not been so impressive. The most worrying thing about this page, is the number of players that are wanted. It’s a fine line between the necessity of keeping the team competitive by holding on to the best players and keeping the players happy.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-jobs.jpg - a couple of very interesting jobs potentially on the line there if the opportunity arises. Although I’ve only had one season here and I’m confident I can win the league again, the minimal transfer budget means there is little chance of building anything more in Europe.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-season-review.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-team-season.jpg

    = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-season-expectations.jpg - well these all seem pretty reasonable but I a would be hoping for a better performance in the group stages of the Champions League.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-confirmed-transfers.jpg - along with these De Decker moves to Bordeaux for a fee of £5.75m, increasing to £8m with add-ons. Yao comes in to replace Soares, who leaves on a free transfer and GK Ebem is signed on a free in the expectation that Scasny will leave.

I reject a bid from Real Madrid of £15m for Saint-Maximin, which upsets him and he requests a transfer - he’s not going anywhere unless his £30m release clause is met.

Terbeshi goes to AC Milan for a fee of £20m - 19 year old Diop steps up from the reserves to take his place and it’s now a case of one in, one out for transfers although I’m still looking for a MC who can tackle.

There’s no-one available for the sort of fee that I can afford, so 19 year old Sevilla wonderkid Ramon Fernandez comes in for the season - I’m hoping his tackling, fitness and teamwork stats will come in useful as he will play in the middle of the park. Scasny leaves for a fee of £6m, rising with add-ons meaning it's been a ridiculously busy transfer window.

All the business I need to do, is done - so it’s time to fend off the suitors for the players I want to keep, which includes rejecting a bid for Post as well. On the plus side, Hoek has not attracted any interest.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-schedule.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-table.jpg

The friendlies were more about making money, rather than the results which is a good job considering they were, more or less, shocking.

Mechelen - the experienced Boulanger gives away a penalty midway through the first half and try as we might, we just couldn’t seem to recover. Not a great way to start the season and I’m hoping that was just the lads not back from their holidays just yet.

Only one game, in which we were not good, so nothing to report really - let’s hope Hoek’s poor performance was just a blip.

Experienced Turkish international Akkaynak comes in on a short contract to add some quality and influence to central midfield.

Brugge - the main rivals are the opposition for the seasons first trophy; the Super Cup. Anderlecht youth product Toussaint is outstanding and his transition from striker to attacking midfielder is progressing nicely, as this performance shows. Another trophy for the cabinet. Diop has a very good game on his competitive debut as well.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-super-cup-win.jpg

Zulte Waregem - Hoek gets his season up and running and it’s an unlikely second scorer as Astolfi scores his first for the club. Diop has another fine game having stepped up from the reserves and is looking a very suitable replacement for Terbeshi. Messan and new signing Attanyak provide the assists.

Disappointingly, Post, after a strong season, requests a transfer under interest from a number of teams which I reluctantly accept.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-moors-absence.jpg - whoops!! And if he thinks a warning was harsh, he should be grateful I was going easy on him.

Eupen - Chafai scores on his first start of the season and Mensah pings in a 25 yard free-kick midway through the second half. Chafai picks up a deserved MoM award in a convincing performance.

Genk - just 2 days later we play again, with a host of players showing a lack of match fitness although I’m not sure I can blame the result entirely on that as we simply fail to turn up and I’m too slow to react to the poor performance as we were already 2 goals down. Ferrari gets a good goal on his first start of the season but otherwise, that was a rubbish result that puts us already 9 points behind Genk who lead the league.

Brugge - the tough games keep coming as we face last season’s runners up. It’s Post’s turn to fire in a free-kick and just as it looks like it’s turning into a draw, a fortunate own goal gifts us a win. A further disappointment comes from an injury to CM Fernandez as he suffers a broken ankle late in the game.

KV Kortrijk - a very good defensive display means we record a 2-0 victory and allow Kortrijk just the one off-target shot. Akkaynak opens the scoring with his first for the club with a drive from distance Enjoyed that performance.

Genk have started the season in stunning fashion with 6 straight wins and just the one conceded. Fourth seed again in the Champions League, so it’s going to be tough regardless…

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-champs-league-draw.jpg

And, yes- that is a tough group.

19 year old reserve player Diop’s transition into the first team has gone well. Toussaint has performed well in his outings and I’m pleased to see new signings Yao and Ebem have started their Anderlecht careers with good performances. Hoek’s return of 1 goal in 6 is a worry though.

Terbeshi is the standout transfer for a good amount for a 28 year old, particularly with good prospects coming through as Diop has already shown. De Decker, Pauwels and Thomann were all surplus to requirements so any money for them was welcomed and Scasny going out was expected as a number of clubs were interested in him.

The transfer budget was tiny and very little money was retained from outgoing transfers so that, along with the fact that the squad was already pretty good, meant that little incoming was needed. The accounts are suddenly looking very healthy.

An International break…and then we’re back to the good stuff…

Lokeren - Chafai’s been outstanding in his performances and deserves his start, Hoek has been disappointing and doesn’t…although it’s not until Hoek comes on, and scores twice, that we even threaten, let alone score. Chafai justifies his start with an excellent assist. Frustratingly, first choice keeper Ebem picks up a hamstring injury ruling him out for a couple of weeks, including, at the worst possible time, Man Utd away.

Manchester United - the step up in class proves too much to overcome again as, although we carve out a couple of good opportunities to make the score look respectable, we’re unable to take them with Maximin and Toussaint the main culprits.

Lierse - I think I have to hold my hands up to that one and say I got the tactics wrong. After the United game, I went for a more defensive approach, which worked in as much as we restricted Lierse to one shot on goal (which they scored) but we couldn’t make anything that was close to being a breakthrough which was disappointing.

VW Hamme - wholesale changes are made for the trip to lower league Hamme in the cup and, whilst not exactly a polished fluid performance, the one goal is enough to see us gain the victory and progress.

Gent - Another poor performance, with Hoek the main culprit as he misses a host of very good chances for us to seal the win.

Inter Milan - 1 goal scored in 4 games is not ideal going into this game but we somehow pull a performance out of the hat, despite going down to 10 men in the 50th minute. Inter absolutely dominate the chances and possession to be fair, but Ebem and co. were outstanding.

Given the lack of attacking fluency recently, it’s no surprise that the defensive players - Cruz aside - are at the top of the stats. Maximin and Messan have been the relatively creative players from different areas of the pitch and it’s good to see, even relatively early in the season, the contributions are being shared around the team.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-league-table.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-cl-table.jpg

Standard - first choice keeper Ebem is injured again, but otherwise it’s a strong team against the rivals as we seek to try and gain some ground on Genk. Hoek should have scored long before he did towards the end of the game and his goal gives us a very narrow, streaky win.

FCP - Yao, through suspension, and Diop; injured miss out. Porto are bottom of the group, with just the one point so this is a good opportunity to consolidate our position although we can’t do anything to prevent the 2 goals that hand them victory, the second after we make changes to try and get something out of the game.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-zak-profile.jpg - Zakrzewski signs to join in Janary after being transfer listed by Mainz as we lack real quality in the centre-back area.

Antwerp - the teams lack of confidence, particularly Hoek, is becoming a concern as he misses a number of chances he would have put away last season. Messan produces the only bright spot in what was another poor game and performance.

I’m not yet anxiously looking at the directors box, but performances will need to improve..and hopefully quickly.

Oostende - the usual 4-3-2-1 formation is retained, but some team and individual player instructions are changed to try and get the best out the players again and get back to some more coherent performances. It makes no difference as 3 individual errors; Ebem drops the ball at the strikers feet, Bilek gives away a penalty under no pressure and Messan gets tackled after dwelling on the ball in the six yard box. That was poor and no-one came out that with any credit.

The generally poor month is reflected in the poor stats athough Messan continues to play well despite this. Hoek and Boakye, who is a talent, need to step up their games- Hoek in particular, is the player who can drag us out of this slump.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-table.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-euro-table.jpg

Mouscron - an attempt to go back to basics and do the simple things pays off. It was a lot closer than it should have been against a team we would normally comfortably beat, and my nails will grow back, but a good Toussaint goal gives us three points and hopefully restores a bit of confidence.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-moors-discipline.jpg - the 18 year old fullback is testing my patience and he’s not good enough to be pulling this shit.

Porto - it was always going to be a tough game and a slower more defensive approach looks like it’s paying off until Messan gets sent off, conceding a penalty in the process and costing us at least a point. Ebem gets the MoM award, although that would suggest he made a string of game-saving stops, which wasn’t really the case. To rub salt into the wounds, the player’s agent comes to me after the game stating that he deserves a new contract.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-messan-agent.jpg
    C
harleroi - Messan makes another attempt to prove he’s worth the extra contract. Although they fight back to make it even, Hoek grabs a winner at the death but it’s Maximin who gets the plaudits with 2 great assists. Not the most convincing of wins, but it’s another win and another 3 points.

Man Utd - we were just not at the races and were second best to everything. Cracking the Champions League is proving to be a tough assignment.

OHL - Yildiz produces a MoM performance and Hoek scores again to round off a good month based on much improved performances, particularly defensive, since the Mouscron game. Moors produces a good assist, but he’s only playing as Messan is suspended and his days at the club are numbered.

The win means we reduce the gap to Genk, still top, to 5 points.

Messan continues to be the stand out player with a good contribution from the RB position but other than that it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. Ferrari hasn’t convinced me with his cup and substitute appearances that he’s quite ready to lead the line just yet.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-table.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-champs-league-table.jpg

Aalst - the cup game is a hopeful respite from the league woes although Bilek makes it harder than it should have been being sent off after just 17 minutes. Despite this, we absolutely batter them for the remainder of the game and a number of players miss very good opportunities to win it. By the time it comes to penalties, our key players miss the ones to win and they take full advantage.

    Another frustrating cup exit.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-moors-discipline.jpg - so that’s 2 weeks wages gone.

Mechelen - Some would think it’s a bit mad, but I start Ferrari again and he, after 8 fruitless games, breaks his drought. Messan provides the assist and then scores the second as he continues his productive season. Some good performances and confidence has increased remarkably which has coincided with some good wins, bar the Champions League results.

Inter - Hoek scores the only goal to give us our second win of the group stage in the final game. Disappointingly, it’s not enough as we end up bottom of the group, although bizarrely with a better record than last season when we finished third.

Zulte Waregem - it’s very noticeable that this season, teams have been looking to exploit behind our attacking wingbacks, who were a feature of our success last season. Both early goals conceded come this way, so we move to a more direct 4-3-3 trying to get both Hoek and Ferrari in behind the Zulte defence which works to rescue a point as Toussaint picks up both goals….although he was given a helping hand with the second.

Eupen - the wingbacks are reverted to supporting fullbacks to try and prevent those areas being exploited. Ferrari leads the line in Hoek’s injury incurred absence and the instructions are to close their midfield two quickly and aggressively which pays off as we dominate possession and turn the ball over quickly, although the 6 bookings suggest it is not without its risks. Ferrari’s increased confidence shows with 2 goals.

Two very tough games await as we play Genk in second and Brugge in first in succession.

Genk - Boakye’s 2 assists in the previous game means he starts and his stock is rising. An early Ferrari goal looks like it should set the tone and we’re guilty of failing to put a number of chances away. Typically, having failed to add to that goal, they steal a goal in the 89th minute.

Brugge - Post rescues us a point with a fine free kick just after the hour mark.
2 points from those two games is not ideal, but it does mean we don’t lose any ground on the teams that look like they are going to be the title contenders and It’s now a long break until the next game in late January.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-m-year-award.jpg - I suspect that’s largely to do with the performances and title win of last season rather than what’s been going on since.

19 year old Diop is making a serious impression in his first season and Messan’s good performances have been noted as he is wanted by a host of teams. Ferrari’s good month of 4 goals is noticed. Ebem, Yao, Akkaynak and Fernandez, on loan, are the new faces to the squad this season and it’s Ebem and Yao who have been the best of the quartet. After his 10 goals last season, it’s a surprise to see Maximin without any so far.

There are only 3 games this month so the focus is going to be on improving the squad and releasing the dead wood and the board make £8m available to do so.

    Name: Zak profile.jpg
Views: 3
Size: 21.2 KB - the transfer of Polish International Piotr Zakrzewski arranged earlier in the season is finalised and, essentially, he replaces Yildiz whose contract expires in the summer in any case. Yildiz signs on a free for Besiktas.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-moors-discipline.jpg…AND again....I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-moors2.jpg

Hoek is being closely watched and with a £24.5m release fee, I’m concerned enough about losing him to secure him a new contract and make him the highest paid player at the club.

Kortrijk - Kortrijk make it a bit easier than I anticipated as they are reduced to 10 men after just 11 minutes. Post continues his fine goalscoring season with another free-kick and Toussaint scores another. Ebem saves a penalty, although we decide to give them another chance and a mistake isn’t made the second time.

Lokeren - Another sending off as Lokeren are reduced to 10 men midway through the first half and although we don’t really make the most of it, a good defensive display secures the 3 points. Hoek’s role is changed from poacher to advanced forward to ensure he contributes more to the attacking play.

The wing-back changes and the increased aggressiveness in the middle seems to be paying off as that’s now 10 games without loss in the league. The increase in confidence and morale has turned into poerformances that mean the September/October slump seems to be long forgotten.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-paulino-profile.jpg - Portugese fullback Paulino comes in and looks a prospect. He can replace the troublesome Moors, who is transfer-listed and relegated to the reserves. In addition, 18 year old Brazilian midfielder; Raoni is signed and will arrive in the summer to replace Astolfi whose contract is expiring and isn’t good enough to be offered a new one.

Lierse - Lierse sit bottom and this should have been a much more comfortable win than it was - we wasted a number of good chances shooting from distance with men spare. Paulino makes his debut and creates the assist for Hoek in the dying minutes.

Hoek gets into double figures for the sixth consecutive season although his rating doesnt reflect his importance to the team. Akkaynak has proven a useful short term acquisition, if a bit expensive on the wages front, but Fernandez has struggled to perform to the levels his ability suggests he can.

  21. February 2032

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-fixtures.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-table.jpg

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-transfers.jpg - the transfer window closes with good January business done. De Marco was a loan when it looked like the Paulino deal wasn’t going to go through in time, but he’s now gone back to Fiorentina. Both Zakrzewski and Paulino are improvements to the team and getting Bertrand’s £20k a week off the wage budget is good bonus.

Gent - Yao is the standout performer as he lays on 2 assists too easy to miss and gives both Hoek and Toussaint their easiest goals of the season.

Standard - Another Yao assist and another Hoek goal gives us the most comfortable 1-0 victory built on a defence which was never really threatened.

    Fernandez’s loan finishes in the summer and the contract of Astolfi, who isn’t really best suited to the Central Midfield role I use, is due to expire. I already have Raoni coming in but the hunt is on for a new central midfielder, preferably a Belgian one and the possibilities so far are;

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-janssen-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-schmitt-profile.jpg

I favour Janssen because I want a tackler rather than a passer, but he’s proving too expensive.

Antwerp - Toussaint is injured so Boakye comes in and grasps the opportunity with both hands as he scores and provides an assist in the first half. The second half is something of a non-event, but it’s a fourth clean sheet in five games to see out the win. Perhaps even better than our result was the fact that Brugge failed to win, meaning we move into within a point of them at the top of the league.

Hoek is unhappy that a number of bids from Chinese teams are rejected, but since there’s no chance of bringing in a replacement, I’m not prepared to let him go.

Oostende - Another good performance, 2 more assists from Yao and another clean sheet - this time with Amrani in goal - means another 3 points. Boakye and Hoek get the goals, but it’s another strong defensive display that takes us top of the league for the first time this season and we’re starting to look like we did last season, although it has taken a long time to get here.

Hoek’s goal means he’s now scored in 6 consecutive games.
Paulino has a satisfyingly good start to his Anderlecht career and here’s hoping there’s more to come from him. Zakrzewski has been solid, if not spectacular and Hoek’s good goalscoring month means he’s starting to look like a proper player again.

Mouscron - Cruz’s sending off was the changing point of the game and we never recovered after that. Diop’s sending off was just the icing on the cake. Something of a disappointing draw although the postmatch report credits us with a ‘never say die’ attitude.

Charleroi - Mensah’s whinging means that he can miss out this game and Cruz, Diop and Schreuder miss out through suspension. Another disappointing goal-less draw as we somehow failed to make the dominance and clear cut chances pay.

OHL - it’s telling that their keeper wins the MoM of the award, but it’s another performance in which we don’t actually trouble the opposition’s net, with Hoek, then Ferrari, the main culprits.

That puts us in second position in the Championship Group, 3 points behind Brugge as the league splits into two parts.

A completely nothing month, with only Paulino providing anything resembling a spark in the otherwise dour performances. A rather depressing month that only reinforced the inconsistency we’ve been showing all season and certainly doesn’t do the title bid any good. I’m also disappointed with Cruz and Chafai’s contributions in the RPM role - I was expecting more assists from here as they’re both good enough, so some experimentation may take place to get the most out of these two players.

  23. April 2032

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-fixtures.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-table.jpg

Lokeren - that will probably be a game more known for its ill-discipline than the quality of football on show. Yao’s world class assist for Toussaint was the only highlight and just as it looks like we’re scrambling for a draw, Boulanger gives away a penalty with just 3 minutes left. Frustrating is a word I seem to be using a lot this season.

AA Gent - Our poor run of form is put to the test again, and we concede a ridiculous early goal. Ferrari forces a string of good saves from their keeper and Zakrzewksi scores his first for the club, but it’s another fruitful performance as we can’t put away any of the many, many chances we make.

Brugge win again, which now gives them an 8 point lead at the top with 8 games left to play…which is probably an insurmountable lead.

There’s something of a bitter-sweet symmetry that my 100th Anderlecht game is swiftly followed by the board indicating that due to the poor performances recently, my position is now declared insecure and it is noticeable that with just 2 and a half months left on my contract, the board have not approached me to renew it…and when I approach them, the board don’t feel that I deserve a new one at this time!

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-100th-game.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-board-insecure.jpg

Mouscron - A change of formation to a 4-3-1-2, hoping to bring the best out of Hoek & Ferrari who both start, although neither are particularly good. Post, who has been my saviour many times this season, scores a wonderful free kick to secure the 3 points and seal the victory. Another scrappy result but 3 very, very crucial points.

Genk - Saint-Maximin finally decides to make his mark on the season as he scores two quality goals. Although Genk pull one back from a 30 yard wonderstrike, aside from this, we were never really in trouble which is something of a surprise given how the season has gone.

Brugge - just two days after the Genk game, we end up with a home game against the league leaders. Everything about that performance was what we’ve been missing for a lot of this season as we chased, hassled, won the ball back quickly, prevented them from getting any shot on target, made the chances and Saint Maximin appears to be making up for lost time as he scores again.

The gap to Brugge at the top is now at 5 points, with 5 games left but it’s still a big ask and we have to hope Brugge slip up considerably.

Lokeren - Ebem makes a dreadful error in a game we were comfortably the better side. Post scores his fifth of the season - all of them direct free-kicks - but we fail to kick on and we should have put the game to bed before Ebem gifts them the draw.

Gent - I take a gamble starting with Ferrari, but it pays off as he scores one and creates one for Toussaint. Toussaint goes on to get a second, taking his season’s total to 12 and that’s the finest performance these boys have produced for some time.

    Sa
int-Maximin finally managed to get his season up and running, although it seems a little too late to get us the title now. Generally the whole team’s performances have picked up this month although Fernandez hasn’t really shown what he can do. Mensah finds himself in the AMC queue behind Toussaint, Saint-Maximin and Baokye who all offer more than he does and Chafai has been excellent outperforming the more experienced and higher regarded Cruz.

The final 3 games of the season, including a potentially huge final game against Brugge if they haven’t already won the title by then.

Mouscron - a slightly streaky win, but an Akkaynak penalty secures the three points in the end.

Brugge win the league, meaning that I have failed in two of the three board expectations for this season…

Genk - Just as the game looks like it’s petering out to a dull scoreless draw, Ferrari, on as a substitute, scores a clinical winner with 15 minutes remaining. We utterly dominated and should have scored more, but I’m happy with the win in the end. Ferrari has very much been a bit-part player, and most of his appearances have been as a substitute but his goal-scoring record is considerably improved on last season, even if he still isn’t in double figures.

Brugge - the final game of the season isn’t quite as tense and critical as it could have been as they have already won the title. A Boulanger header from just inside the 18 yard box and a fine Boakye goal following a mazy 40 yard run are only good enough to get the draw.

Unsurprisingly Hoek leads the goalscoring, although Toussaint is hot on his tail. Ferrari as back up, Post due to his set pieces and Boakye all provide some contributions. No-one shines with the assists, but Yao makes a good contribution from the LB position and is the standout transfer from last summer. His £400k purchase from Amiens is looking ike a bargain.

No real surprises for the team of the season although it is noted that Chafai and Cruz are both in the team as there would usually be another defensively minded player there; Genghini or, more likely Post.

The season review really makes it clear that we didn’t have a good season, despite the Supercup trophy at the beginning of the season.

Another visit to the chairman midway through June to request a new contract is fruitless as they again indicate that they don’t feel I deserve one so I think it’s time to accept this season wasn’t good enough and my time at Anderlecht comes to an end. What a weird way to end my time at the club; not sacked, not headhunted or interested by any other jobs, just a refusal to offer me a new contract.

There are loads of jobs available, but none of them are at a club of any standard I want to manage at. Bologna have just been relegated from Serie A and have a very strong squad for Serie B. I’d like to get back into managing straight away rather than wait for another vacancy to come about and this would be a very interesting opportunity so I put the pressure on….

A first look at the new squad shows that it’s pretty balanced with the exception of the centre-back position, where we only have one. AF Fabbri is clearly the strongest player here and a must to hold on to, although there is serious interest from a number of clubs. There are no reserves but I can work on that in due course and CMs Vinci and Maineri and LB Nardi are the youth prospects. I’m going to try something I’ve never done before and go for a route one attack and aiming to utilise either a poacher or advanced forward between two target men for flick ons etc.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-potential-formation.jpg

None of my fullbacks are any good at crossing so they will have to be improved in time. I’m not sure about the CM roles, so I might experiment with those and may look at a 4-3-3- if it looks like the midfield is getting over-run. Lots of players need to come in, with centre-backs and target men strikers being the priority.

    Defenders:
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-cianci-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-buisson-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-secca-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-gruszka-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-pellacini-profile.jpg

Thats pretty much two whole new defences begged, stolen or borrowed and worryingly the fans don’t seem overly enamoured by any of them. They’re all pretty average but the best I could do. Definitely areas to gradually improve on.

    Strikers:
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-gio-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vives-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vitale-profile.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-munoz-profile.jpg

Giordano on loan is the strongest prospect, but the others look like they can do a job and be a good supporting act to Beneddetti or Fabbri who I expect to get the lions share of the goals.

Just as I’m getting things sorted, my starting keeper Mendes breaks his leg in a training ground incident and is due to miss the entire season. Stand in Borini is reasonable, but I will be on the look out for another and Irish keeper; Liam Allen is signed on a free.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-expectations.jpg
    - well, these seem reasonable but the pressure is on to gain promotion. The wage and transfer budgets don’t leave a great deal for manoeuvre.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-lumezzane.jpg
A comfortable win in my opening game, even if it was Serie C opposition in the second qualifying round of the cup. Redinciuc is the prime creative force with 2 assists.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-albinoleffe.jpg
Another good win over another Serie C opponent. Buisson is the only player who retains his starting spot from the Lumezzane game but it doesn’t seem to matter. My only concern is that no goals have come from the AF position, whether it’s Fabbri or Benedetti.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-parma.jpg
Time to see whether the form in the cup competitions carries over into the ‘real’ games and it turns out it doesn’t. A disappointing introduction to Serie B.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-salernitana.jpg
It’s not a pretty performance, but it is effective. Allen keeps a clean sheet on his debut and Munoz scores his third in three games.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-transfers.jpg - the window is shut and the transfers are more functional over style. Munoz has already made an impression but the fans aren’t exactly over the moon with most of the signings, Buisson and Vives particularly.

  30. September 2032

With my first choice left-back Rossi refusing to sign a new contract and leaving at the end of the season on a Bosman, Irish youngster Steven Byrne comes in as a prospect. On the plus side, this will free up the £40,000 p/w that Rossi is currently being paid.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-brescia.jpg
This should have been much more comfortable than it was, but journeyman striker Munoz makes the difference. We rode our luck a lot.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-modena.jpg
Munoz is great again and Fabbri scores the textbook route one goal. The defence deserve some plaudits as they held out under serious pressure towards the end.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-novara.jpg
To say we were lucky to get a draw is an understatement as we were completely outplayed with only Borini in goal keeping is in it.

    Vs Cittadella
Cittadella couldn’t cope with the rapid transition from back to front and Fabbri announces himself. The result would have been even better if Munoz had not missed two on-a-plate chances.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-pro-vercelli.jpg
A change to 4-3-3 after a comical own goal brings its rewards, but to no avail in the end as we concede a sloppy goal towards the end of the game. First choice RB Ihitz suffers a hip injury and is laid off for 4 months which causes an issue as his replacement; Tosi is just 16 and not really ready for first time football.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-spal.jpg
Vitale has his best game in a Bologna shirt so far as he scores twice to give us a comfortable win. Munoz returns to scoring ways. Cianci’s own goal was the only slight downside but we still have the fewest conceded goals in the league.

Well that month went well. The combination of a defensive, cautious mentality and an attacking formation seems to be paying off as well as switching between the 5-2-3 and a 4-3-3 depending on opposition and whether I’m home or away. Munoz, with 6 goals in 8 games, has already scored more this season than he has in any of his past 4. Redinciuc’s good performances in the middle of the park have been noticed as he’s wanted by a number of teams.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cesena.jpg
A tough game as we face the team in second and the decision to match up to their 4-3-3 doesn’t pay off. Only 2 Munoz penalties rescue us in a pretty wretched performance.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-livorno.jpg
A slower, more considered approach and keeping the 4-3-3 pays off for 70 minutes, although it takes a penalty for us to score. Another disappointing drawn performance and more ground lost on the league leaders.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-ternana.jpg
Hopefully home advantage against one of the weaker teams in the division, should give us a good chance. The scoreline suggests it was tight, but despite only scoring once, we never looked like losing. Fabbri picks up his fifth of the season from a quality through ball from Redinciuc.

The more cautious 4-3-3, rather than the route one 5-2-3 seems to be getting the better performances from the players, so that is the tactic to build on…it does require me bringing in additional CMs though and Icelandic DM Asmundsson comes in on a free.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-entella.jpg
A streaky Munoz goal seals the win, but that was hardly a classic performance.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-ascoli.jpg
Asmundsson makes his debut although it’s a bit of a nothing show from the whole team.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-benevento.jpg
We get mullered in the first 20 minutes before some changes are made to counter their wingers who were running the show. We were more comfortable after that and got back into the game and restricted them to speculative long shots. Munoz is looking like the key player and a cracking free transfer find.

  32. November 2032

Benedetti comes in for Giordano and is given the DLF role to drop a bit deeper to offer another option. LB Rossi is given more freedom and RB Tosi, is given less.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-vicenza.jpg
It’s a good job we were clinical because we definitely didn’t make as many chances as we could have done. A fine Redinciuc goal from a Munoz assist seals the win.

Lots of players are missing through either injuries or international duty so this is a bit of a makeshift team. Away to the team in second means a more conservative approach.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cagliari.jpg
Not a good performance, although given the team it was not a great surprise that we created so little. Both Benedetti & Vives have now gone lengthy spells without scoring.

I’m hoping a formation change to a 4-1-3-2 will help give a bit more balance and control in the middle.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-palermo.jpg
Which it does…but while possession, shots on goal, on target and corners were all up, that was a wholly frustrating game as no-one seemed to be able to put the finishing chances on anything.

The recent poor performances force a revert back to the route one 4-3-3, with a quicker tempo and emphasis on passing the ball forward, not dribbling.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-va-avellino.jpg
Two Fabbri goals seem to vindicate the decision, the second after a particularly after a fine flick on from Munoz - the typical TM assist.

A bit of an inconsistent month that one, but I’ll take the blame for chopping and changing the team when we went through a sticky patch. Sometimes it works, sometimes you have to go back to doing what the team is good at which we did against Avellino and is showed.

Tell me about it - the usual starting formation is fairly offensive, but I either don't seem to be getting the best out of the attacking players or the system is wrong and I'm not making the most of them...I'm working on it and I'm still in a bit of a trial and error stage.

Not sure the board will give me too much flexibility given they want promotion through a league win!

A really tough cup game against Serie A opposition in Bari. The fourth qualifying round is as far as the board expect me to get but with a long injury list and only 8 subs available, it’s already an uphill struggle.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-bari.jpg
We had the chances to at least draw this, but Fabbri and, unusually, Munoz put their chances wide. Munoz suffers a significant hip injury which causes us a serious headache as our top scorer now misses 3 months.

The injuries are seriously hurting the team and a lack of depth means that players who should not be playing, are having to come in.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-genoa.jpg
It’s a good job Fabbri can put away a chance from a setpiece as before that, we didn’t really do much. Benedetti has a whinge about a lack of playing time and this performance shows exactly why this is the case.

Benedetti has to start againi in Munoz’s continued absence and a couple of fringe players are given chances in the starting line-up.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-crotone.jpg

Well, they weren’t very good and we were given a helping hand with the own goal but both Giordano and Maineri put their goals away neatly. My most convincing win as Bologna manager.

It turns out that Lazio have had an appalling run in Serie A and find themselves in the relegation zone. They sack their manager and it’s too good an opportunity to pass up…
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-lazio-rejection.jpg…although it would appear, that Lazio board do not feel the same way.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-frosinone.jpg
Well that was embarrassing. We completely gifted them the opening 3 goals, but to then concede the rest was very poor. Even trying to shut the game down didn’t work. On a very, very minor plus side, Benedetti got his goal.

After the Frosinone shambles, a much more condensed approach is taken.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-parma.jpg
We were so close to grabbing the win. Redinciuc scores a cracking free-kick but the team can’t hold on to seal what would have been a very valuable three points.

The winter break gives us the opportunity to strengthen the team and a few positions are needed but the Serie B wage cap of £4,900 a week is limiting. Viable loan options are almost non-existent and the free transfer market has no quality whatsoever. However, midfielders Costa and Labadie come in for reasonable amounts. Both are good technical players, good passers, composed and look ideal as a foil for Redinciuc or Carbone in the middle.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-costa-signing.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-labadie-signing.jpg

In addition, Manchester United youngster Rodrigues also comes in on loan until the end of the season and he’s a huge step up on Torsi who has been playing RB in Ihitz’s injury absence.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-rodrigues-loan.jpg

The defensive stance is retained. Labadie is given his first start and Rodrigues makes his debut as well.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-salernitana.jpg
Both debutants are solid and I thought Cerci’s goal on the 88th minute had won it, but as ever, we do enjoy making things hard for ourselves and concede even later than that.

We’re slipping behind the front two which causes me to look at the rules for promotion in Serie B and they’re one of the more confusing that I’ve seen
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-prom-rules.jpg

Labadie is injured, so Costa makes his first start and the front 3 are shuffled slightly with Vitale moved into the TM(S) role between AF Fabbri and TMA Giordano. The wing-backs are encouraged to get further forward as well.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-brescia.jpg
A very nice performance as we're much improved. Pushing LB Rossi forward pays off as he gets the assist for Vitale's goal before Buisson scores from a corner.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-sack-race.jpg - uh-oh, this is ominous…

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-transfers.jpg

The transfer window shuts with very little business done in January, with just the 3 players coming in, but 3 players who are going to be in and around the first team. The search is already on for replacements in the summer for loanees RB Rodrigues, ST Giordano and LB Rossi who has already declared his intention to leave on a free.

An away game combined with the absence of key players through suspension, means a more conservative approach is taken. Modena play a 4-4-2, so the intent is to overload the midfield and play behind their midfield wide players.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-modena.jpg
Which works to perfection as we dominate in every respect. Vinci is outstanding in the anchor man role and even the maligned Vitale gets in on the act adding an assist to his 2 goals.

Vitale’s recent form makes him undroppable and Fabbri joins him in a 2 man attack. WBs Rossi & Rodrigues should provide good with slightly ahead of a 3 man central defence. Novara sit 20th so it should be a comfortable win, but we’ve hardly been fluent recently.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-novara.jpg
That was another good win and another 4 goals scored and it looks like I’ve finally got the balance sorted for these players. Fabbri’s goals here give him 11 for the season, two behind leading scorer; Munoz and Redinciuc leads the assists with 7.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-ac-milan-applicaiton.jpg- I wasn’t good enough for Lazio, but this job then becomes available and again, it’s too good to turn down, although I’m not holding any hopes out for this one…with good reason, as I’m turned down for that one too.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cittadella.jpg
I think I’ve cracked it. Fabbri gets the plaudits, but it’s Redinciuc who’s the unsung hero in the middle of the park.

Munoz makes his long awaited comeback after injury and a couple of other changes are made to allow some rotation.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-pro-vercelli.jpg
Maybe I haven’t quite cracked it. Vitale had the chance to win this with 2 very good chances at the death, but he placed them both wide when through 1 on 1. We were slightly fortunate to come out of that with a point, but it’s a clean sheet.

That excellent month keeps us well and truly in the promotion game and is hopefully something of a eureka moment as it looks like we have a system that works.

  37. March 2033

Some changes are needed due to this game coming so soon after the previous one, so both the top 2 are changed. Spal play with a very peculiar narrow formation, so the space on the flanks is there to exploit, which we set out to do.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-spal.jpg
With some success as it turns out as Rodrigues provides both assists getting forward from his wing-back position and producing the 2 fine crosses that leads to Vitale’s goals. A win that finally takes us top of the league.

A tough game as we travel to local rivals Cesena who currently sit one place below us.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cesena.jpg
In no way did we park the bus, but we were appalling and failed to do anything of note. We had one shot on goal and that was in the 91st minute as I just couldn’t seem to get the changes right during the game to constitute anything close to being a threat.

The left footed Vitale is preferred to Munoz in the left striker slot alongside Fabbri and Labadie comes in for the, so far, unproductive Costa. Allen gets a start in goal.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-livorno.jpg
It’s a good job Fabbri is on form, because our defence most certainly aren’t.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-kocic-profile.jpg - Serbian leftback Kocic comes in on a free. The intention was for him to replace Rossi in the summer who leaves on a free, although he’s good enough to instantly become the first choice. His value jumps to £18.5m instantly as well, so looks like a valuable investment in the worst case.

Kocic is thrown in straight away and Borini replaces Allen who didn’t perform particularly well against Livorno. Despite being in the better form, Vitale is replaced by Munoz who starts up top with the redhot Fabbri.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-ternana.jpg
The penalty was clear-cut but up until that point we struggled to make the breakthrough. Kocic picks up the MoM award on his debut and that’s Munoz’s first goal for more than 10 hours.

Munoz starts again but our besy performing centreback; Buisson and midfielder; Redinciuc miss out through injury and international duty respectively. Entella sit second so a win is a good opportunity to put some distance between us and the chasing pack.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-entella.jpg
It’s somewhat telling that Borini picks up the man of the match award as he singlehandedly saved us from losing this one.

  38. April 2033

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-udinese-vacancy.jpg - Am I glutton for punishment? Udinese sit in a comfortable 14th with no risk of them getting relegated. They’re certainly a lower calibre than the AC Milan and Lazio who I had previously been turned down by, but they’re a step up from Bologna with a better reputation, higher wage and transfer budget. I'm very tempted, but I'd probably only be turned down again and the chance for a promotion is too good to back away from right now.

Nuno Mendes appears in the squad for the first time this season as he is the reserve keeper. Costa is moved to an AP(s) role to try and get more creativity out of him and Gruzska is given a rare outing with Buisson injured.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-ascoli.jpg
Munoz is outstanding and puts away the three chances he has as we show great character and determination to come from behind twice.

Mendes makes his first start as Borini injures himself in training. Otherwise, it’s the same team that beat Ascoli.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-benevento.jpg
Even before the sending off we were pretty comfortable but after that we took control without really getting the shots on target we perhaps should have done.

Vicenza sit at the wrong end of the table and we’re in good form, so I’m optimistic about our chances. Vicenza’s defensive formation needs to be broken through, so one of the tweaks here is to encourage roaming in the hope it pulls their players out of positions.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-vicenza.jpg
To no avail - a drab match all round.

Cagliari sit in third and come into the game in good form having not lost in 8 games.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cagliari.jpg
Redinciuc drives the team forward from his BBM position in the middle of the park with an outstanding free-kick and generally bossing the midfield. An eventually comfortable win in a game which was a potential banana-skin.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-appearances.jpg - CB Cerci takes the record from LB Rossi, although both players are still in the squad and still very much first team players so expect both to build on these numbers.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-700-games.jpg

Another tough game, and an unchanged team as we travel to Palermo
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-palermo.jpg
A very even game and I thought Benedetti, on as a substitute had grabbed us the draw with just over 10 minutes to go and despite trying to shut the game down, we handed Palermo a winner, although the nature of the deflection made it a ridiculously flukey goal. A bit gutted not to have at least got a point out of that.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-avellino.jpg
A game of very little quality or sustained pressure by either team. Avellino had the majority of the possession, courtesy of a keep-ball policy between their back 4 and we struggled to get through the midfield 5. Gruszka, only in the team as a result of injury to usual CB scores a 16yard header to give us the point.

  39. May 2033

The numbers are; 3 games left to play, 8 points clear of third place and 2 ahead of Cesena in second. Promotion looks all but guaranteed which is something of a turn around given our early-mid season performances, but winning the league is far from certain.

We travel to Genoa with our top scorer Munoz or a recognised DM with Vinci & Malneri both suspended. Giordano and Carbone come in to do a job for the team. A win guarantees Serie A football next season.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-genoa.jpg
Fabbri hit the bar twice in quick succession in the first minute which rather set the tone for a frustrating afternoon’s work. Genoa took their chances, which we couldn’t, and withstood a bit of an onslaught towards the end of the game. Luckily for me, Cesena can only manage a draw and move to within a point.

Munoz and Vinci return to give us the strongest possible starting 11.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-crotone.jpg
It’s an unlikely goalscorer in Ceci who gives us the lead after a bit of a corner fiasco, but we’re pegged back almost immediately. Benedetti, on for the unusually ineffective Fabbri, grabs the winner with a clinical header as the game looked like it was dying to a draw.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-promotion.jpg - that win guarantees promotion, mainly thanks to a much better second half of the season than first.

This gives us the opportunity for some payback after the humiliation of the 6-1 drubbing earlier in the season.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-frosinone.jpg
Although we’re shocking and Fabbri concedes a penalty to gift them the win as Frosinone just seem to have the beating of us.

Happy with promotion, but really, we should have won the league. Our home form let us down as we finished with only the 6th best home record, but the best away record so it’s clear where we let ourselves down…relatively.

Rossi is deservedly the fans player of the season as he has been outstanding, although it’s Munoz with a career best 20 goals, who has propelled us up a division. Redinciuc looks every bit a Serie A player and Rodrigues was a quality loan option as well as he’s performed fantastically.

The challenge is now on to bring in the extra quality to compete in Serie A.

  40. June - July 2033

The end of season formalities are completed as we create a new Serie B record for average attendances. An attendance of 19,560 is significant but as we have a stadium capacity of 36,000 it’s still only just over half full - hopefully Serie A opponents will bring the crowds and some increased revenue.

Redinciuc finishes third in the player of the season awards and is named in the team of the year along with keeper; Borini and leftback Rossi.

In an attempt to maintain Serie A status which is the minimum board expectation - 4 new players are bought in.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-new-players.jpg

Gruzska drops out of the first team to make way for Bakker and Simoes comes in as a prospect but will be in and around the first team. Sa replaces Borini who didn’t want to renew his contract and the brilliantly named der Sloot comes in as Rodrigues’s loan spell ends and he goes back to Man Utd.

There’s very little money available otherwise so it’s definitely a case of one in, one out now (unless something too good to pass up comes along).

Jobs in the top three leagues, although none significant, start becoming available, and it’s time to have a look round the top leagues in Europe to see what’s been happening…

So, just as we’re starting to prepare for the new season, the board accept an offer for Fabbri over my head which is a problem as he’s much more valuable to me than the £9m that Watford bid. It looks as though Benedetti, who has just requested a transfer will be leading the line, but another striker is needed - ideally a youngster with potential.

  41. August 2033

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-fontaine-profile.jpg - Belgian youngster Fontaine comes in for a fee of £7m + potential add-ons relating to appearances and goals scored, which he will probably meet but he’s young, talented and I’m hoping he can make a significant contribution.

The arrangement with parent club Porto pays off as we end up with two very decent looking options, with Robinson Gomez coming in as an extra option in CM and Jose Luiz as CB.

he friendlies have been and gone and with the exception of a very poor result at Salernitana were pretty much as expected. Slightly disappointing to note that over the 5 games, and 6 goals, we only had 2 goalscorers.

Anyway, the third qualifying round of the cup is up first against Serie C opposition. I want to go as far as possible in this competition so a strong team is selected. It’s a bit of a changed team as GK Sa, CB Bakker, RB der Sloot and CM Gomez all make their debuts. Vitale and Benedetti have the main goalscoring responsibility up top. Benedetti was a bit on the sidelines last season as Fabbri was the lead striker, but with Fabbri now gone, Benedetti will be getting much more gametime.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-brescia.jpg
We properly ground out the win after going ahead through the own goal. Defensively pretty solid, but not enough in an attacking sense.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-board-expectations.jpg - reasonable enough and, with the improvements in the squad, very achieveable.

So, here we are - hopefully the boys are raring to go as we’re slight underdogs, but do have home advantage and it’s the same starting 11 as the cup game.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-chievo.jpg
I think it’s fair to say that we absolutely stole that one as we scored with our only shot on target. Van Der Sloot wins the man of the match, but it was keeper Sa who ensured a clean sheet and if you can keep a clean sheet, you always have a chance. A very valuable 3 points.

Gomez misses out after an injury and the front 2; Vitale and Benedetti are replaced by Munoz and Fontaine.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-sampdoria.jpg
We held our own for a long time but eventually succumbed to 25 yard wonderstrike, and we couldn’t claw back one of our own after that, despite having a number of good chances to grab the equaliser. A tough result, but not embarrassing by any stretch of the imagination.

Empoli finished 8th last season, just outside the European places, so this is not going to be an easy game. Mendes, Buisson and the on loan Luiz make their first starts this season.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-empoli.jpg
Another game in which we stole a result but we deserved that just for the defensive performance, which was outstanding. Der Sloot scores his first for the club.

If we’re going to finish towards the bottom of the league, these are the teams who are going to be around us and the teams we need to be getting points against.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-sassuolo.jpg
We were actually playing pretty well and in the lead until an unfortunate own goal seemed to give them a bit of a boost which we couldn’t keep up with.

Bit of a free hit this one as we’re not expected to do anything. Benedetti misses out through injury and Ceci is restored to the team. I resist the temptation to go proper defensive, but that might be a plan depending on how the game goes.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-roma.jpg
Fontaine struggles up top, but he’s not helped by the rest of the team who fail to service him. A move to a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 at half-time gives us more going forward but it’s a little bit too late by then.

The games certainly don’t get any easier as league leaders up next as Inter come to town. It’s becoming clear that the tactics that got us promoted are not going to be the tactics that keep us in the division so an extra DM is brought in as we look to control the game at home.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-inter.jpg
We do, more-or-less control things, but trying to forge any half decent chances is proving difficult. It’s telling that only 1 team - Lazio, weirdly sitting at the bottom of the league - have scored fewer than us. 7 points from the 6 opening games is not a bad base to build on as I’m almost already counting the points to safety.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-martins-profile.jpg - Portugese attacking midfielder Jaoa Martins is signed on a free after his Benfica contract expired - hopefully to bring some creativity and guile to central midfield and to give the strikers the ammunition they need to get some goals.

  45. October 2033

Martins makes his debut in the AMC position and the same 4-1-2-1-2 formation is employed, with an emphasis on winning the ball back and moving it quickly. Pescara are another team who will be at the wrong end of the table, so picking up points here is vital.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-pescara.jpg
Benedetti finally comes to the party and gets his season up and running as we just seem to over-run Pescara.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-torino.jpg
Munoz gets his first of the season and we dominate possession but just can’t transfer that into meaningful chances. Conceding a sloppy goal just 3 minutes from time was not in the script and a bit of a kick in the teeth as it looked like we were destined for at least a draw.

The tough games keep coming and it’s Fiorentina up next. A couple of changes are made to keep the team fresh, including dropping Fontaine who, in 8 games, has produced the sum total of absolutely nothing.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-fiorentina.jpg
Munoz gets his second in as many games and again, we hold out until the latter stages of the game, conceding an incredibly frustrating equaliser…again, in the 87th minute. We’d be picking up quite a few more points if we could just see these games out, although a draw, away, is not the worse results and I’d probably have taken that before the game.

A minor tactical tweak is made to play wider and we’ve reverted to a back 3 again to make the most of this at home.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-verona.jpg
The extra width pays of as Munoz pulls wide and squares a great ball across the 18 yard box for Fontaine…YES FONTAINE…to end his 11 hour wait and finally get his first for the club and the season. On loan centreback Jose Luiz desrvedly gets his moan of the match award as he’s imperious in defence.

A defensive shield of Maineri and Vinci is employed in front of a back 5 as I unashamedly set out the stall to play for a draw.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-napoli.jpg
As a result, it’s a pretty low quality game but we get the result we set out to get and manage to nullify Napoli’s attacking threat. Kocic as the attacking LB is deservedly awarded the MoM as he defends superbly and manages to get forward to be involved in the rare attacking threats we did have.

For the second time this year, the Lazio vacancy becomes available as Pietro VIsconti is sacked after just 10 months. Lazio sit bottom, with no wins and 5 points from safety. But this time I’m favourite for the job and despite their lowly current position, they’re a major step up in reputation, finances and facilities from Bologna.

Considering they were promoted with us, Cesena have had an outstanding season and sit second in the league with wins against Juventus and AC Milan, among others. We’re at home so the shackles are released from the DMs slightly and the team are given a little more creative freedom. Top scorer with 3, Benedetti partners Munoz at the business end of the pitch.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cesena.jpg
A disappointing result which didn’t vindicate the attacking changes that I had made. Redinciuc’s fine free-kick was the only consolation in a game in which we didn’t really show what we were capable of - particularly the first half.

As it turns out, a disappointing end to my Bologna days as Lazio make a formal approach which I accept and the first time I've taken a job from a team in the same country. The promotion was obviously the highpoint here and was done with some style. Understandably, it's been harder this time round as the team have had to step up a division, but Bologna are in a pretty good state and well capable of staying in Serie A this season.

So, another job beckons and it’s my 10th managing job.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-players.jpg - I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-club-details.jpg

On the face of it, it’s a complete mystery why Lazio are sitting in the poor position they do as it looks as though the squad is there, reasonably balanced and surely good enough to be sitting further up the league. The facilities are excellent and the backroom staff are easily good enough. The youth set up is also very good and a number of prospects are out on loan, but there are players good enough to step into the first team.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-league-table.jpg

The table does not make for pretty reading and the stats are absurd - no wins in 11 games with only 5 goals scored. The immediate target is to keep the club from relegation, but after that, Lazio are a team who should at least be playing European football so that’s the longer term goal.

The transfer window is still 2 months away so we’re stuck with the players we have, but with the right formation and tactics, we should be able to make some progress.
There’s a bit of a wait until the first game due to the International break, of which a number of my players are on duty, so time to get accustomed to the squad and a friendly is arranged for the others.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-friendly.jpg
So, it’s hardly representative of the opposition we’re likely to be facing, but that utterly dominant win should at least put the team in good spirits before the next Serie A game. Nascimento was outstanding so he will need to continue that form for the season.

A number of players return from international duty so we’re back to full strength. The players are suited to a 4-2-3-1 formation so that’s what we’re starting with and, at home, looking to control the game with the emphasis on letting the players express themselves.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-sampdoria.jpg
Nascimento carries his goalscoring on from the friendly game and, despite being under serious pressure in the last half an hour as Sampdoria went all out, we hold firm to record a duly deserved win. A pretty good managerial debut at the Stadio Olimpico.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-empoli.jpg
Well that was disappointing after the optimism of the Sampdoria game as we lose to arguably the weaker of the two. We had enough possession and enough shots on goal but nothing that troubled the scoresheet.

  48. December 2033

We’re at the opposite end of the table and the signs are not promising as we turn up and try
to mitigate the damage with a full-on very defensive structured tactic.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-roma.jpg
Which pays off to perfection as that man Nascimento scores the only goal to give us 3 very valuable points. Although Roma had more of the shots, they were mostly speculative and from distance. We only had 2 shots on target, but Nascimento puts his one away. CB Afonso grabs the man of the match award as he contributes significantly in repelling Roma’s attacks.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later and we welcome Bologna to the Olimpico. The same tactics that served us well against Roma are retained, although Ceccarelli has to miss out through injury with Panetta leading the line. Japanese CB Saito comes in to partner Afonso at the back as I’m still trying to work out my best defensive partnership.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-bologna.jpg
Luna is outstanding in the AML position with a mazy run leading to the opener after just 20 seconds. His fine free kick just sealed his MoM award as we restrict Bologna to speculative efforts and drag ourselves out of the relegation zone for the time being.

There’s only 2 days rest before another massive (they’re all massive at this end of the table) game.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-inter.jpg
Considering we didn’t even have a shot in the first half, the second was a much improved affair after some tinkering with the player roles…not good enough to win, but improved none-the-less. The whole team seemed to be plagued with a case of wrong decision making at vital times. 20 year old Hadzeresic makes his debut.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-pescara.jpg
I was hoping that the deployment of an extra DM would help provide a solid base, although it didn’t appear to help to restrict Pescara’s attacks. All the business was done in the first 10 minutes as Panetta gets his fifth of the season. GK Russo had a fine game restricting them to just the one goal.

It’s exactly the same starting 11 hoping to make some amends for the Pescara game.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-torino.jpg
A ridiculously frustrating game is only saved in the last 10 minutes by substitute Redolfo - his first goal in 26 games (!!!!!) - and a deflected Lluna freekick. Prior to that, every shot had gone tamely into the keepers hands, or was struck into a defender. The points are more important than the performance and hopefully will increase some morale.

Not quite the results I needed this month, but enough to pull us very slightly clear - albeit, only by 2 points at the moment but it’s very tight at the bottom and a couple of wins can make a significant difference in league positions.

  49. January 2034

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-signings.jpg- I team up with a familiar face as Messan joins permanently after a loan spell from Inter who signed him from Anderlecht, where he performed admirably for me. The other signing is 21 year old midfielder Benedini who, it would seem, AC Milan have allowed to leave for a pittance as he looks to have the ability to be a very good player.

Redolfi gets his reward for his game-winning substitute appearance in the last game and Benedini is given his debut as well. Experienced defender Lundqvist misses out with a 3 month injury.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-fiorentina.jpg
It’s a good job we’d built up a 2 goal lead when LB Pinto was sent off, because that jeopardised our position considerably and we were completely over-run after that, despite attempting to mitigate being a player down. Luna was outstanding with 2 goals and Benedini had a solid enough start to his Lazio career. Redolfi was disappointing though and the lone striker is still a position/role I haven’t quite sorted yet. That win bumps us up to 14th.

A proper lower mid-table clash as Verona sit one place above us. Benedini retains his position and Ceccarelli, on paper our best striker, returns from his injury layoff. CB Cason has to play LB as both my naturals in that position are injured or suspended.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-verona.jpg
We rode our luck at times, but Messan’s first for the club gives us a win that, on balance, we probably deserved. 3 straight wins have dragged us 8 points clear of the relegation zone and, whilst qualification for the European Cup is probably out of reach, survival is looking more likely.

Whilst Napoli aren’t the easiest opponents, we’re on a good run. Pinto returns from his injury so the back 4 is back to full strength.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-napoli.jpg
Michel misses a golden opportunity as he fluffs a one-on-one and if Panetta was more clinical, we would have won that instead of conceding that 90th minute kick in the teeth.

Somehow, Cesena who were promoted last season, sit at the top of the league by 4 points having been in Serie B for the last 3 seasons, although they suffered a heavy defeat to Atalanta last time round so we’ll be looking to capitalise on that.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-cesena.jpg
Well, that was unexpected as we just about edge a pretty close game.

Palermo are rooted to the bottom of the league and we’re very much upwardly mobile at the moment so I’m optimistic that we can get a result at home. My only ongoing disappointment is that we are not getting the most our of whichever striker is playing, so a couple of tactical tweaks are made to do something about this.
I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-vs-palermo.jpg
Panetta inexplicably manages to hit the bar from a yard out with an open goal although it’s not critical as his blushes are rather fortunately spared. All round a pretty good performance and Benedini’s good performances this month have pushed Ramirez out of first team contention and onto the transfer list.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-transfers.jpg- the only movement I’m responsible for is the incoming Messan and Benedini and there has been nothing significant going out. There are 19 players, mostly in the reserves whose contracts expire in the summer and they can all leave freeing up about £140,000 a week on wages which can definitely be better spent.

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-goals.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-assists.jpg I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left-av-rating.jpg

It's disappointing that only 7 players have scored this season and top scorer Panetta only has 5 goals after 24 games - definitely an area that needs improving. On the plus side, goalscoring contributions are being made by Lluna and Nascimento the wide players and it's these two who have produced the assists. GK Russo leads the average ratings which is not a surprise as he has been on form.

Overall, a good month which pushes up the league. 6th place, and European football, is manageable, but it's going to take some effort to get there as although it's only 6 points the whole league seem pretty compacted at the moment. I've been slowly eating away at the goal difference as well, so that will hopefully be positive soon.
