I say it's a 4-2-1-2-1 that lines up like this...
DL-Jordi Alba FB-S (slightly more attacking mentality and creativity than Arbeloa...he may be a WB-S)
DCL- Ramos CD-X
DCR- Pique BCD-C
DR- Arbeloa FB-S
DMCL- Xabi Alonso DLP-S
DMCR-Busquets DM-D
CM-Xavi AP-S (free role...he has license to go anywhere he wants)
AMCL- Iniesta AM-S
AMCR- Silva AM-S (swap player with Fabregas)
ST- Fabregas (Trequartista)

i would perhaps say that despite where the TQ( Fabregas ) played, he is still with à higher closing down setting

The way they lined up against Italy was a strikerless 4-3-3 so to speak.

GK- Iker Casillas (Sweeper Keeper-Support)
DL- Jordi Alba (Fullback-Attack vs. weak teams/Support vs. nearly equal teams)
DC- Sergio Ramos (Central Defender-Defend)
DC-Gerard Pique (Ball Playing Defender-Stopper)
DR-Alvaro Arbeloa (Fullback-Support/Defend...always one notch lower than Alba in his attacking duties)
DMCR-Sergio Busquets (Anchor man-Defend)
DMCL-Xabi Alonso (Deep Lying Playmaker-Support)
CM- Xavi Hernandez (Central Midfielder-Support and as mentioned above, he has a free role to do what he wants)
AML-Andres Iniesta (Advanced Playmaker-Attack)
AMR-David Silva (Advanced Playmaker-Attack but they cut inside like inside forwards and try to take long shots also. Swapping between Silva and Iniesta happens a lot.)
AMC- Cesc Fabregas (Trequarista).

If you make Cesc play like real life as a false nine by bringing him deeper and stuff like that then you can improvise on it by making Xavi a false ten and acting as a striker-like midfielder with darting runs forward. I did this with Napoli to a great success although the formation was different. Hamsik acted as my false ten and Lavezzi as false nine in the AMC position.

He did have a higher closing down setting, but he was very ineffective in that capacity. I hate that part of the match engine...I haven't yet-despite all my effort-been able to create a false 9 that actually presses their defenders and then plays a roaming/free role once the ball passes midfield.

You're right on Silva and Iniesta...the AP-A role was much more accurate, but they seemed to be start off more centrally (at least Iniesta). I listed them as attacking mids as opposed to advanced playmakers because they were allowed to roam more (I suppose that could be solved by manually allowing them to roam). However, Fabregas started higher up the pitch than both Silva and Iniesta, so I would make him a striker TQ. If he starts at the AMC then he will be too drop too deep and will move into the same space as Xavi. Upon further contemplation, I would probably line their front 3 up like this:

AMCL-Insiesta (AP-A...allowing him to roam from position)
AMR- Silva (IF-S)
ST-Fabregas (TQ...trying to adjust his closing down settings, but keeping tackling at low maybe...or setting close down always to the CBs?)

I would probably make Alba a WB-S as his first instinct wasn't to push towards the endline, but instead to combine with Iniesta and send through balls from a little deeper. He only drove to the endline for a cross on occassion.
