Hi there, just wondering if anyone out there has any recommendations for a good laptop capable of playing football manager to 4, maybe 5 star performance. At the minute, I've got no idea how much RAM to look out for, or what kind of graphics card I need. Any help would be much appreciated! I don't really want to be spending over £600, so what kind of performance realistically (in terms of stars) should I be looking at? Many thanks. :)

I have a PC and its a Sony Vaio cost £699 2 years ago and i can run 12 leagues smoothly and also the games run smoothly to.

I would recommend that but am sure the Vaio laptop is nearly as good. Hope this helped.

I have acer aspire 5750 intel core i3 4gb cost 400 squid, i am currently running fm save with 23 nations and 24 leagues and no probs what so ever really your computer will run fm just fine with 1 half 2 stars game speed! plus i have **** loads of facepacks, logos, skins, kits all loaded into game.

I've got an acer aspire as well....bit older than yours though, can't work out what it's called as sticker has fllaen off lol!. Fm rates the processing speed of my computer at half star, but i have about 40 leagues running, no probs lol, **** knows how!

I really rate acer laptops have had them for few years now. To find out what sort it is mate just click on computer then system properties at the top:)

It all depends.

If you only intend to use the laptop purley and simply for FM then don't bother going for a i7 which runs at a ridiculously high speed (3.00Ghz or higher) because FM will be more than capable of running on a dual core processor which is less powerful than the i7 processor amd less expensive than the i7.

As for RAM well this can depend on how many applications you have running in the background, remember the more applications the more memory is used up.

I have a AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core Processor @2.40GHz with 4GB RAM and a GeForce GTX460 DDR5 (I had to buy a new fan because the current fan couldn't handle the power of the card so i upgraded to 100W)

I can run FM with 40 Leagues running and 16 nations no problem at all. Plus I ran Mozilla Firefox, Itunes, Steam in the background.

However that said, thats a computer and I use this for other purposes too, you can get an equally good or similar laptop for a good price. Try looking around the web on sites like PC World, Currys, Dixons, Comet and see what deals they have, you can usually build your own computer by selecting what you want as hardware which comes in handy.

First off, thankyou everyone for your very quick replies! :)

Normally I just do about 8 leagues, yet my laptop only says I have half a star performance, and I paid £400 for my laptop a couple of years ago, so I never thought it would have that bad performance. Are the star ratings actually important? Also, what's the difference between 2 star and 5 star performance? Is it just that it simulates the other results quicker? Would it cost like a grand to get a 5 star performance laptop, just so if it is, then I know how to alter my expectations!

In terms of applications I use, I tend to have itunes, chrome, vlc media player and fm on at the same time, so how much RAM would be suitable to have them run quickly? I'm looking to buy a laptop that will last me through sizth form and uni hopefully, so I don't mind spending a bit more for a good quality laptop that'll last me five-ish years without giving me problems. One thing I have found is that with the last two laptops I've had, I've had major overheating problems with both, so do you guys have any recommendations on any reliable brands? You've mentioned Acer, just wondering if there's any more. Finally, Is there any bother searching out laptops with certain graphics cards too?

So far I've got these three down as potential buys:
HP Pavilion dm4-3002ea Entertainment Beats Edition 14" Laptop - Black at cheap prices | Pcworld
SONY VPCEJ3T1E/B.CEK 17.3" Laptop at cheap prices | Pcworld
ACER Aspire V3-571 15.6" Laptop - Black at cheap prices | Pcworld

Thanks tons for the help :) (I know it's not the most interesting thread on here!)

With the laptops you hav picked out, 6GB RAM is more than enough to run the applications you use.

Overheating can be down to a number of things. The Processor getting extremely hot and the fan having to work harder than usual to cool it down. With Laptop's its extremely important to use it on a flat surface because then the heat that the laptop gives out can escape, if you have it on the bed or something then heat can't escape and therefore is being forced to stay inside the laptop which can mess up the important components inside and can sometimes cause your laptp to blow out completely.

The i5-2450M is a very good processor. It has a maximum clock speed of around 2.50GHz which is faster than the average laptop. This particular processor offers built in Overclocking which can increase the speed to around 3.10Ghz. However if this is done, its very important to keep a close eye on the temperature because if your not careful you can actually destroy the processor.

6GB of memory. In one descripton, this is alot, even for a PC. You will be able to have many applications (Internet, iTunes, Chrome, VLC Media player, FM and even more running at the same time and your performance will still be good.

500GB+ HDD is a massive HDD, you can hold thousands of songs, movies & games on a 500GB+ HDD, even more so on the 750GB Model.

Graphics card depends on whether a) the laptop already comes with a good Graphics card or b) If you are bothered about the graphics or not. However because FM focuses more on the data side of things, and rarely spend a long time in a game, then a really good Graphics card wouldn't be nessessary, If you are playing a game, for example, Flight Simulator X then you will obviously want a decent graphics. Graphics all depends on personal taste.

For me, personally, if I was going to buy one of those laptops keeping in mind of Uni and FM and other things. I would buy the first one. The HDD is bigger, and it looks like a overal good laptop, the onboard graphics aren't too bad either.

I have an Acer Aspire 5750G laptop.
Intel Core i5 2.30 GHz
4 Gb RAM
500 Gb HDD
NVidia Geforce 540M
Football Manager 2012 runs perfectly. I only select 4 leagues when I play and the graphics rating is like 3.5 or 4 stars. No lags at all.

You have a very good processor to run FM thats why theres no lag. You could actually run alot more leagues than 4 and you will still be able to run FM with no lag at all. The i5 is so underrated in my opinion. I prefer it to the i7. Im going to buy a new processor soon for my PC, I might look at Intel rather than AMD but I'm fearful that it wont fit in the socket on my motherboard.

So, overall, the main thing to look out for would be the i5 processor and 4gb+ of RAM? I think I will go for the first one, even if it is a bit overbudget. Is there any point waiting for windows 8 to come out do you think?

Thanks for your post.

Hmm, I'm not sure when Windows 8 is released but the thing you have to think about is if you have some games on your computer and maybe some apps, they may not be able to run on Windows 8 yet. This happend with Windows 7 I remember when It was released, people were having trouble installing games and apps until a few updates and patches were released.

The only thing I know about Windows 8 is it has touch-screen capability built into it aswell as having Windows 7 as a core.

I'm not sure if FM would be able to run on Windows 8 or not, you have to check the offical forums and see if there are any articles or topics regarding this.

To be honest, 4GB of RAM is alot to run a game. You have to remember that each application you have open in a background uses up RAM, if, on your PC, it comes up as "Memory running low" thats down to the RAM being used up, in this case what happens is the PC starts using HDD space up to run the program, which can slow the PC up considerably and cause all sorts of crashes and other problems.

But anyways, the first laptop is good. To be honest it was hard choosing out of the 3 what one to have but you shouldn't have any problems with running FM with more Leagues and nations running than usual with any one of the 3 laptops you chose.
