Good midfield Player Role combinations?

I'm in a fairly strange situation in-game at the moment - somehow the game has contrived so that decent premiership-level ML/MR players (note: not AM, just M - I'm playing a straight 4-4-2) seem to be fairly hard to come by, and those that are half-decent are prohibitively expensive (£8m plus - more than I'm prepared to spend with regens now starting to come through). As a result, against teams I feel I'm better than, I've started playing with no wide midfielders and playing 4-3-1-2 with 3 MCs and a AMC.

The problem is, I can never work out which roles I should use. I've tried this:

MC: Box-to-Box Midfielder
MCR: Central Midfield (Support)
MCL: Central Midfield (Support)
AMC: Advanced Playmaker (Attack)

this:
MC: Deep-Lying Playmaker (Support)
MCR: Central Midfield (Support)
MCL: Central Midfield (Support)
AMC: Attacking Midfielder (Attack)

and a few other combinations as well. I've tried playing wider in order to prevent overcrowding in the centre of the park, I've tweaked all kinds of instructions regarding through balls, creative freedom and so on, and no matter what, we don't seem to be creating much. The players I'm using are all plenty good enough (Will Hughes, Andy King, Andrea Bertolacci and Tom Cleverley - all rated at least 3 stars in their position with Bertolacci and Hughes rated at 4), but we're not creating anything against teams we really should be.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong? I'd love to hear the thoughts from someone else who plays without wingers.

your doing nothing wrong,ive spent hrs trying all sorts of tactics.the game is just a mess i am affraid

There is no right and wrong, you wanna implent your tactic, if you want to play like that, its not wrong, it might not be the best through.

Depends on your Players available aswell right, For a Playmaker role you cant really use a player like De Jong/ Van bommel/ Ramires
Has to suit your players aswell.

If you wanna play with 4 Midfielders you can play 1 or 2 Destroyers / Ball winning / Defensive / Anchorman
Play 1 or 2 Playmakers - Maybe 1 Deep lying or one Advanced or both.
And also use All round guys who can Defend and Attack roles like - Central midfielders - Attack/Support depending on the players stats and the way you would like to play football.

Just be aware that if you play 4 Offensive Players And no help for your defense, your Defense may be abused
