The Scottish Football League, home to some of footballs fiercest rivalries, clubs in spiralling financial ruin, a brand new reformed league structure and bizarrely England's Northern most football club, Berwick Rangers.

b_zpsed48f99e.png

Sitting closer to Glasgow then any other English town, Berwicks unique position on the border has seen the Wee Rangers play in the Scottish football League for more then a century.

Rightfully proud of their status as the only English team to be playing in another countries Football League, Berwick fly both nations flags at their stadium, Sheilfield Park and sport both the English and Scottish Lions on the club crest, however their split identity is soon to change.
1n_zps7ff227f3.png

Currently with just one English player in the entire squad, in the shape of central defender Jonathon Fairbairn, the club currently has a very strong sense of being all together rather too Scottish for my liking.

Arriving at the club with them starting at the foot of the Scottish Footballing ladder, I intend to the take the loneliest club in England to the very top, making them the most succesful Rangers in the country and hopefully bringing some long awaited silverware to a club who have had little to celebrate in over one hundred years of lacklustre football.

The main aim of my time up North however is to achieve these goals by only signing players of English nationality. For too long Berwick has floated between the two nations but with a new era comes the beginning of a new chapter for the Borderers

The English Invasion is coming.

The derbyjack? From susie? Good luck with this mate!

Haha, no or at least not that I'm aware of. I'm not entirely sure how to do it but thanks to the generous person!

Hi Dan! Good to see you. Thanks very much.

First step on the road to English domination of the Scottish football League is to reform my entire backroom staff.

Mutual terminating the contracts of seven Scottish staff members on my first day at the club hardly saw me make a impressive first impression upon the Berwick fans but before long I soon had them distracted as I welcomed my new staff to Northumberland.

1p_zps286f560c.png

The Scouting team of Wordsworth and Liptrott aren't exactly going to get pulses racing but the pair of them have a large amount of history within Scottish football and should be well adept at luring out the best of English talent from the highlands.

1q_zpsc207d709.png

With the first English arrivals at the club settling in we were quickly back into action as we welcomed two staff members with experience of life within the Three Lions to the club as part of our newly formed Youth setup with injury riddled midfielder, Kieron Dyer performing the assistant duties and one cap wonder Dean Ashton assisting him as Youth coach.

1r_zpsbd430879.png

With two high profile arrivals already at the club we continued to build our staffs profile welcoming two former Merseyside heroes to the club, as recently retired defender Jamie Carragher took control of the Reserves team, whilst one of England's most prolific strikers, Michael Owen took a break from horse racing to take up the role of Assistant Manager to the first team.

With my backroom staff now settling into place, the next course of action is to somehow persuade them to come out of retirement.

Do you not use susie anymore mate? Be good to see you bring the story over there too! Fantastic to see you bring in such high profile staff members, how on earth did you manage that?

I still browse often Dan not as active as I would like to be but I'll certainly pop over soon. In all honesty, there coaching attributes are...well. terrible. We're the only ones that would take them!

With an entire squad of English players due to arrive at the squad over the next few seasons, there's certain to be a few comings and goings at the club and despite me being in charge for just under a month I was keen to get to work in transforming the squad.

n_zps3951476e.png

With just three departures, attempts to clear some space for some new English talent didn't exactly go as planned.

Former Player/Manager Ian Little was the first to depart as my arrival saw him leave the club that adored him, with the forty year old striker setting off on his own managerial adventure. Veteran central defender Grant McNicholl was next to be shown the door as the Scot set off for Bo'ness united for a massive thirty five quid, whilst last to leave was the only non British player in the team, South African Devon Jacobs. The Right back is a fairly strong player at this level and would certainly have had a role to play in the coming season but when Lincoln City came calling we were quick to take advantage of some quick cash, scooping just under six thousand pounds.

Not the overhaul that I was expecting but no the less progress has been made and I was quick to bring in some new faces to the team.

First arrival of my English revolution is former Celtic youth player, Travis Gregory. Having never made a first team appearance for Celtic it appears Gregorys career has already hit a rather large stumbling block but having impressed in the Scottish trailists game, we were quick to bring the Eighteen year old into the squad.

As one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in the division, why Annan chose to let him join us on a free is beyond me, but there loss is our gain as we welcome, Alex Mitchell to Berwick. The young goalkeeper has already played out two full seasons in the division and will be our number one between the posts for the coming campaign.

Having been part of the crazy gang of Wimbledon way back in the Nineties, Bryn Halliwells career has long since fazed out in Scotland having worked his way down the footballing pyramid to end up wallowing at non-league Sauchie, he was more then willing for a second chance at Berwick Rangers, despite being back-up to Mitchell.

Another youngster to bolster our defence, all be it not a ready made centre back but the nineteen year old has plenty of potential to one day become a rock at the heart of our defence. With a host of Scots ahead of him in the pecking order, its going to take a while for Oli Monguel to squeeze into the first team.

From the same academy that created Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott, Jack Boyle hasn't quite reached the same heights as his former team-mates. Having turned to Scotland for an attempt at salvaging his career, Boyle hasn't exactly been able to hit the ground running but an open spot on the wing at Berwick gives the Twenty One year old the opportunity he has been craving.

t_zpsfdd615c0.png

We had to fight to get him and with one of the largest wages in the squad Twenty year old Curtis Jones has a lot to live up to. Like Travis Gregory, hes formerly from Celtics books but having yet to make an appearance the promising defender has had to set out on his own to find some all important game time.

The final signing of the season, sees the arrival of Pat Walker. The experienced striker has been in the division for over a decade but has never really shown his true quality, with a sharp finish and tireless pace he has the ability to cause defences all kinds of problems at this level but getting the most out of him is sure to be key to our seasons hopes.

So it turned out to be a rather busier then expected transfer window. With three departures and seven arrivals at the club its fair to say numbers have swelled a bit. With a couple of surplus players unable to be shifted it has left me with a rather bloated wage bill but as the season goes on we'll hopefully shift some dead weight.

Be good to see you around Susie, I hope you don't mind, would it be okay if I started this 'challenge' off on susie? I want ot have a go and like the idea of the high profile back room staff etc?

Ah, I see you already have. To be honest was kind of looking forward to making this one my own at least whilst I was just getting started but heck I'm not going to stop anyone.

Large squad, limited funds, inexperienced staff and a looming season. Time to distract myself with the tactics.

Now with the club aiming for a respectable position in the league, I probably should have settled for a formation that would see us atleast hold our own in what could be a fairly formidable season this year but instead I came up with this...

1s_zps5337d304.png

3-4-3. Unleash the beast.

Making the most of our impressive central defenders, along side my desire to field three strikers, makes this the only sensible option and by sensible, I mean down right stupid.

Potentially fragile at the back confused in the midfield and over crowded upfront, its almost certain to be a disaster but if it goes right this could be the very tactic that fires us straight to the Scottish Premier League. With instructions to harass and push every opposition, fitness is going to be crucial to this tactic.

In all honesty in every other Football Manager I've played it safe. Four at the back and two up front if I'm feeling risky but this year, quite frankly I feel its time to adopt the Keegan mentality and more importantly embracing the lyrics of "Vindaloo"

"Were going to score one more then you."

So transfers done, staff assembled and tactics somewhat in place. Lets get this started. Time for the pre-season.

Scottish non league side Ballingry where first to experience the might of an English revolution...and apparently didn't care. A two goal draw was a fair result following a shocking opening fifteen minutes to kick start my career up North. With two Scottish players saving my blushes.

Time to test our might against some strong Scottish opponents, this time Scottish League One side Dunfermline. This time we had an outstanding opening fifteen but was to count for nothing as we conceeded three sloppy goals 10 minutes either side of the break. Gielty managed to salvage a draw as once again the Scots came to the rescue.

e_zps79c1930d.png
Another Scottish League One side and this time a well earned victory. Scottish striker Dalziel snatched the only goal of the game as a resolute defensive display held out to give us a morale boosting victory with just one game of the pre-season remaining.

Final game and finally an English player made his mark as newly signed striker, Pat Walker grabbed a brace as we stomped to a five goal victory over English non league minnows Ashington. A nice way to end the pre-season and its always nice to show our fellow countrymen whose the top dog along the border.

Pre-season done and dusted, Pat Walkers off the mark and we didnt lose a single game. Shame Pre-season counts for absolutely ****** all. Bring on the season!

The season starts here, all be it with just the one game in the month and in the Challenge cup but non the less, our first competitive game is here

27th July 2013
Challenge Cup First Round

g_zps684c57c9.png
Drawn against Scottish Championship side Livingston it was always going to be a tough ask and by the end of the first half we were already two goals down. Pulling a goal back gave us a brief glimmer of hope but a red card for centre back Tulloch allowed Turgot to score a rapid hat-trick as Livingston romped to victory with winger Boyle picking up a consolation goal to take the sting out the scoreline.

Not the greatest way to start the season but to be fair progressing in the competition let alone winning it was not exactly part of my plans

Scottish League Cup First Round

h_zps84b11ba9.png
Another Cup competition, another Scottish Championship club and another early exit for Berwick. Not exactly good for the finances but at least now we can give the league our full attention. Three goals in the opening quarter of an hour suggested we were in for a mauling from Dumbarton but a spirited second half at least saw us pick up a goal before falling to a hard defeat.

Scottish League Two

i_zps8c5e7994.png
First game of the league campaign, excitement and tension all boiled down to a dull goalless draw. Its not exactly the most lively of ways to start the season and with three strikers upfront it hardly bodes well for the remainder of it but non the less were off the mark. Kind of.

Scottish League Two

j_zps1198ee4f.png
Okay so I'm sensing a theme already here. I was honestly expecting this formation to result in my matches being a complete goal fest but apparently it appears I've developed a tactic that puts a game into complete lock down. We're not exactly off to a flyer.

31st August 2013
Scottish League Two

k_zps1a0bf8ed.png
Thats more like it. Two goals in the first fifteen minutes saw us fly into an early lead before being pegged back before the break but free kick wizard Currie and striker Lavery were in fine form combining to give us a comfortable victory to truly get the season started.

August
Scottish League Two

l_zpscd0625cb.png

First month at the club and the first monthly award as central defender Curtis Jones impresses the panel with some solid displays at the heart of our defence. The youngster is the only English player currently matching the Scottish players in the team and at only Twenty its hopefully the first of many.

m_zps10f8464a.png

So a solid start to our season, we've not exactly shot out the blocks but an unbeaten start sees us sitting pretty in the play off spots and just one point behind the leaders as no one makes it through the month unscathed. Theres obviously a long way to go but hopefully we can get comfortable at this end of the table.

Solid start to the season but that's all it is, a start. Despite only having ten teams in the league theres still a **** of a long way to go till we can even think about being in the running for the top spots.

4th September 2013
Scottish League Two

w_zpsba21a9c9.png

The goals have really started to flow since we got over our dry start to the season, unfortunately they proved to be moving in the wrong direction as we found our selves on the wrong of a Seven goal thriller against Albion Rovers to inflict our first defeat of the season.

14th September 2013
Scottish League Two

x_zpse1cab520.png

First loss out of the way, there no time to dwell on it as were quickly back into action and once again its another goalfest as striking duo Lavery and Walker slam in three in the opening half an hour before a sloppy defensive display allows Montrose to make the last ten minutes extremely nervy watching.

21st September 2013
Scottish League Two

y_zps94986255.png

Two wins on the bounce, Lavery once again opens the scoring with fellow Scots O'Brien and Morris joining him on the scoresheet as we convincingly beat Clyde with a well earned three points away from home. Nine goals in three games. At least the strikers are in form.

25th September 2013
Scottish League Two

z_zpsbbfc6a67.png

So our winning streak didn't exactly last long, conceding an early goal set the theme for the match as we slumped to a convincing loss at the hands of lowly Elgin City. A brief sign of a fight back from Walker at least gave us something to cling on to but non the less its a disappointing way to end the month.

29th September 2013
Scottish Cup Second Round

1a_zpsf9fb6acb.png

Our last shot at a cup run and we took it with both hands as our impressive strike force of Lavery and Walker again combined, this time to see off Stirling in what proved to be yet another goal bonanza. Were not exactly tight at the back but with these two in form, we don't exactly need to be. On to the Third Round.

September
Scottish League Two

v_zps7e24f9d6.png

With a mixed month on our hands its predictable that we find ourselves in the middle of the table, the league is already looking like its going to be extremely tight, with no team able to actually make a strong claim for the top spot and despite our sloppy start were still well within touching distance of the leaders and if we can only sure up our defence we'll soon be back at the top end of the table.

Forms a bit up and down bud, keep plugging away! Nice to see you advance in the cup too!

Loving this story so far mate. The layout is really good.

Check out my story if you get time :)

Not sure if I like the idea of an england invasion on scottish footy however I am going to follow..

Good story to read of a lower league team. Stodgy results so far but to be only a point off top isn't bad.

Early days yet, Dan just getting used to a dodgy formation hopefully but I think theres positive signs for sure.

Thanks iamauser, will do!

Sorry Matthew, If it makes you feel better, history proves I'm genuinely quite useless at this game. Thanks for following!

Thanks Waccoe as long as it stays this tight were in with a shout of pulling off an unexpected promotion somehow!

Oct13-1_zps56f8533b.png

Fresh from knocking them out of the cup were back into action against Stirling and this time we pull off an even more convincing victory with a three goal thrashing in front of the Borderers fans. Pat Walker continues to impress in front of goal and alongside Curtis Jones is proving that our English players are at least pulling their weight.

19th October 2013
Scottish League Two
Oct13-2_zps9a53ee78.png

Nothing like a nine goal thriller to settle the nerves. With Darren Lavery leading the charge we struggled to match the pace in a thrilling first half that saw us go in at the break a goal behind a seemingly rampant Peterhead but a spirited display following the break saw Lavery complete a well earned hat-trick with striker partner Pat Walker grabbing a brace to ****** all three points.

26th October 2013
Scottish League Two
Oct13-3_zps49ec72ff.png

The winning streak continues as our strikers keep on finding the back of the net as supporting striker Josh Morris joins his free scoring partners on the score sheet with the ever present Walker joining him to fire us to another victory. We're on a roll here.

Oct13-4_zpsc5cf28c3.png

He's on fire. Top English goalscorer in all the home nations, Pat Walker is unstoppable right now, picking up another goal in an extremely tight game against East Stirlingshire, as the Early goal proved to be just about enough to cap a seriously impressive month for the Wee Rangers.

Oct13_zpse7a1b84a.png

A perfect month for the Borderers sees us fly straight to the top of the table, its still a close run thing up here and there's plenty of games still to come but right now there is absolutely nothing to complain about at Shielfield Park.

2nd November 2013
Scottish Cup Third Round

Nov13-1_zpsee3e4584.png

Our brief run in the cup comes to an end following a spirited display against League Ones Forfar. We gave them a scare in the first twenty minutes when Lee Currie and Pat Walker both found the back of the net to put us seemingly in control but it was to count for nothing as we crumbled for the remainder of the game to throw away our advantage and our last chance of cup glory.

Scottish League Two

Nov13-2_zps19c8ce7f.png

Back to the league and back to winning ways. Strike partners Darren Lavery and Pat Walker continue to be a formidable force at this level, with the two combining to sink Queen Park Rangers in style, to cap a well earned come back following a sloppily conceded goal but non the less were unbeaten in five in the league now. Table topping form.

Scottish League Two

Nov13-3_zps0dfd8c0e.png

Sensational. I was worried we were going to be off the boil following a long break in fixtures but I need not have worried as, we're starting to hit some absolute phenomenal form in the league here with all three strikers making it onto the scoresheet, with set piece wizard, Lee Currie starting the free scoring with two stunning free kicks to set the tone for an absolute white wash as we run out convincing seven goal winners.

30th November 2013
Scottish League Two

Nov13-4_zps2efed344.png

Capping a perfect month in the league in some style, we thrash a sorry Clyde team, picking up five more goals to make it fifteen in three games. Striker Pat Walker once again hits the front to claim a well taken brace whilst the midfield takes it upon themselves to seal the deal, as we absolutley dominate proceedings at Shielfield Park.

November 2013
Scottish League Two

1c_zps1ecde5b8.png

An easy decision for the board, the Englishman is the hottest striker in the Country right now, scoring goals in just about every game since he arrived here, its fair to say Pat Walker is leading the English revolution here at Berwick and long may it continue, however its not just our new striker thats taking the plaudits as hes joined by fellow strike partner Darren Lavery and midfielder Lee Currie to claim all three places in the Player of the Month award for Berwick. Not bad.

1d_zps164f4711.png

All I had to do this month was sit back and watch as our attacking formation finally came to fruition in some style with fifteen goals finding there way to the back of the net and just three being hit in return. Were in some real form right now and with the goals seemingly free flowing hopes are high that it will continue long into the season.

1e_zpsf6c4dcd2.png

Increasing our lead at the top were now seven points clear. I don't think I've ever experienced a perfect month in Football Manager but this must be roughly what it feels like. Our goal scoring is head and shoulders above the rest and despite only having three at the back were holding our own in front of goal as well. What started off as a season of rebuilding has suddenly take a much more exciting twist.
