Someone who has had success, how do you do? What's the trick? I want to ******* win haha

I've found that eating a pomegranate while praying to the Egyptian God Osiris helps during penalty shoot outs.

I had your problem. You have to be a reactive manager in this FM. Nullify threats of your opponent while forcing them into your strongest area. Watch the match and respond accordingly. MANUMAD's thread was golden for me. read everything in there you can and watch your FM 14 life change

My 10 tips, not sure if other will agree:

1. The game prefers taller TM strikers i.e. started a game with West Ham, signed Crouch for 400k, severely criticized for it. He ended up scoring 26 goals and helping me to a 6th place.
2. FB's are extremely vulnerable, so set them up for every game depending on the opposition they'll face.
3. Because Fb's are vulnerable, set your wingers/wide players up to take adv of opposition fb's.
4. Dont use opposition instructions
5. Dont set up attacking corner tactics, i find I score more goals without it.
6. dont make big changes during a game, the ME will punish you, but be reactive with small subtle changes
7. get your midfield pairing right (google tactical guide: pairs and combinations
8. change your mentality according to your opposition, and do it every game i.e. when your heavy favorites go attacking, evens standard etc.
9. get your flank combinations right i.e. if your winger is attacking, your full back should support or defend
10. Read your scout report for next opposition and exploit weaknesses, but dont make large scale changes to your tactic, small subtle is the key.

Finally, read as much as you can, there are good guides available and eventually you'll get it, I had the same problem.

Nice to see ones work appreciated ... Ta.

This works yes, but you can also win with shorter cfs if tactics and instructions are correct.

2. FB's are extremely vulnerable, so set them up for every game depending on the opposition they'll face.

Yes, but it cuts both ways. If you utilise thru balls yourself you ll have loads of chances per match (pass into space instruction). I also agree on setting your own tactics to deal with the opposition threats.

3. Because Fb's are vulnerable, set your wingers/wide players up to take adv of opposition fb's.

See above. Also, rather than messing with your wingers/wide players (and blunting your own team) I advocate looking at opposition squads and formation, pinpointing the good creative players and dealing with them through man marking and/or OIs (ie dealing with the thru ball problem before it can arise).

4. Dont use opposition instructions.

Most certainly do not agree with this . A couple of effective OIs would be to tackle hard the less brave of the opposition cbs and to always close down the opposition GK.

5. Dont set up attacking corner tactics, i find I score more goals without it.

No idea.

6. dont make big changes during a game, the ME will punish you, but be reactive with small subtle changes

Most deffo not. Within 25 minutes at least you will have enough indicators as to whether your tactics/formation are working. If not, changing your starting formation to one of your other two saved ones can be the difference between losing and, erm, not losing. This is just an example. As has already been mentioned you can look here for more: http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/foot...506-ask-uncle-mad-uncle-mads-box-choccys.html

7. get your midfield pairing right (google tactical guide: pairs and combinations

Indeed. Ideas such as staggered cms, multiple playmaking sources etc are expounded in my above thread.

Also, in real life this is where most matches are won or lost. In FM14 even more so. This is the reason why strikerless tactics (if set up correctly - which is EXTREMELY difficult) can be very effective - because they enable you to really pack the midfield.

8. change your mentality according to your opposition, and do it every game i.e. when your heavy favorites go attacking, evens standard etc.

This works for most people yes.

9. get your flank combinations right i.e. if your winger is attacking, your full back should support or defend

Very reasonable in principle. But in practice its better to have a fb/wb support/auto behind a winger support and a wb attack behind an if attack. You could:

1) Employ a winger support with instructions stay wide and shoot less together with a fb/wb with instructions to cut inside when possible.
and
2) On the opposite wing employ an IF attack with instructions to play further up field together with a wb attack with instructions to stay wide.

Notice the variety.

10. Read your scout report for next opposition and exploit weaknesses, but dont make large scale changes to your tactic, small subtle is the key.

Very correct. Tho if your three saved tactics are sufficiently varied (esp formation wise - again look in my thread for more) you can simply choose the one closer to what the opposition usually finds difficult.

Finally, read as much as you can, there are good guides available and eventually you'll get it, I had the same problem.

So true. FM14 is a game but if you want to do well it requires commitment which includes a lot of studying and planning.

You're a Pomegranate salesman trying to boost his monthly sales aren't you!!

I'm onto you!!

In all seriousness, I'd recommend you leave the game for a few days, grab a pen and paper or open a Word document and study your *** off.

It's most likely your tactics are off.

Try the tactics forum here on FM base and the SI forums, as well as the numerous brilliant articles on FM scout and FM blog. Personally, there was a lot of stuff that I though I knew that was completely wrong.

I went back into the game with a much better understanding of what I wanted to do, and how to do it

Thats what I did, but after all those readings on the internet the results were the same, maybe because I was already doing that.
