THIS PART OF MY STORY IS IN PRESEASON
With the relegation of his beloved club, Steve Gibson decided to act fast by sacking current manager Gareth Southgate who obviously hadn’t done enough to keep his job. This was a surprise to everyone because Steve Gibson had never sacked a manager. It didn’t take long for him to bring in a new manager. He brought in another young ambitious manager in Danny Fogg.
Many fans questioned this decision because youth and ambition hadn’t worked before in the hands of Gareth Southgate. But Steve Gibson had full faith in his new young manager.
Fogg was determined to do well, because Middlesbrough is his hometown club and he was once in the stands watching his favourite club. As he had told the press.
Steve Gibson demanded promotion and he handed out a 3.5m transfer budget, although Fogg was expecting a bit more money, he got on with his job quietly. Changes had to be made drastically, and because of the tight wage budget players had to be sold.
He quickly got on with his job and his first signing was young Leroy Lita who had earlier been released by his old club Reading, but Fogg saw ambition and championship experience in him, and that’s why he brought the young English striker in.
The wage calibre was very tight at this stage and the manager soon demanded extra funds for wages but this was soon rejected by the chairman. So now Fogg had to get on with selling players. But before this they had a important friendly at home against Slavia Prague. This game was increasingly important for the players, because this showed who wanted to be at thee club and who didn’t. It was a comfortable 2-0 victory for Middlesbrough, a good start for the young ambitious Fogg. Goals from Aliadiere and Tuncay sealed the win. Not surprisingly bids started to flood in for players. Especially the likes of Tuncay and Huth. Huth was soon sold for 5m to Fulham, who had previously had 2 bids rejected for the tall centre-half. Tuncay is said to be happy at the club but bids were flooding in and some of the bids were getting very close to a acceptable offer. But no deals were done, and soon enough Boro were ready to play their second friendly against the likes of Partizan Belgrade at home. Boro sneaked a 1-0 win, with the young wonder winger Adam Johnson scoring on 36 mins. This was a poor performance by Boro and manager Fogg was expecting a much better performance against local rivals Darlington in two days.
With increasing interest in Tuncay, Fogg started to look for a new striker, he called at the young Scottish Cardiff forward Ross McCormack and sooner or later Boro had a 900k bid accepted, and personal terms were ready to be done. But the young striker had no intentions of leaving Ninian Park. So the young Fogg carried on searching.
More interest was shown in several more of the Boro players. The likes of Andrew Taylor, Josh Walker, and Chris Riggott were just a handful of them. But Fogg had no intentions of selling these players as they featured in his plans. But a good offer would be hard to turn down.
But Boro had to put transfer stories behind them for a while, as they had a local derby at The Darlington Arena. Fogg was looking for a good performance from his new team, after there lapse in the last pre season fixture. Boro once again failed to impress, with the score ending up 1-1. With Julio Arca scoring Boro’s only goal. Boro were dominant during the game, and this showed that changes were needed, within every department of the club. Fogg had more bad news with Chris Riggott coming out of the derby with a minor injury that would leave him out up to 2 weeks. Fogg was already being tested at such a early start to his managing career. Things weren’t looking good for the new season. Soon enough the League cup 1st round was drawn, and with the way Boro were performing a away trip to Carlisle was not who Boro were looking to draw.
Fogg soon started working hard in the transfer market by looking abroad. Soon enough he found 26 year old Matias Vuoso, who was a Mexican striker with a good record. Fogg was hoping a bid in the region of 2m would be enough to prize the unknown striker to teeside. Fogg also looked at the young Joe Ledley but soon enough Ledley signed a new contract with Cardiff showing his intentions that he didn’t want to leave. Fogg was finding it hard to bring in talent in the transfer window. Boro soon showed there ambition in the transfer market, by making a bid for the young leeds starlet Fabien Delph who was attracting attention from Premier League clubs.
The bookmakers tipped Boro to be second favourites for the Championship at 3-1 behind favourites Newcastle at 5-2. The bid for the Mexican striker Vuoso was stalled and this didn’t help Fogg as time was running out before the first game of the season. Bids were soon once again flooding in for Tuncay. The likes of Birmingham, Wolves and Portsmouth all made bids. But Fogg found that none of there bids were acceptable and it looked like Tuncay was starting to prepare for life in the Championship unless a deal was made. But Portsmouth soon came back with a improved offer, which had to many clauses in so the deal was negotiated. While all this was happening squad numbers were decided for the new season, with new signing Leroy Lita picking up the number 9 shirt. With Cardiff declaring their interest in Chris Riggott it looked like Boro had a struggle to keep the young centre back. Portsmouth soon disappointed Boro by withdrawing their offer for the hard working Tuncay. With 23,000 season tickets already sold, it looked like fans had high expectations for the season. Boro were soon enough travelling down the M1 to face Cambridge. Fogg was expecting a comfortable victory, but with Boro once again struggling with complacency who knows what will happen.
Boro walked away with a comfortable 3-0 win, but the performance didn’t match the result. The fans were again not happy with the performance and neither was the manager, but he was satisfied with the victory. Goals came from the likes of Adam Johnson, Didier Digard and the young Rhys Williams. Once again another injury was picked up this time by Afonso Alves, who would be out for up to a week.
Boro were getting increasingly impatient with the Mexican club Santos Laguna who still had yet to back to them on the transfer of their striker Matias Vuoso. So Fogg acted on this by making a 1.4m bid for Man City’s Zimbabwean striker Benjani. A day later Vuoso’s offer was accepted and personal terms began with the player. But negotiations soon stopped as the striker demanded 54,000 a week, and this was not to Fogg’s liking. Fogg was finding it tough. Boro were soon travelling to the seaside resort of Bournemouth for there final pre season game. Once again the manager was expecting a solid performance, one they hadn’t had very often in pre season. But this time Boro produced and walked away with a well earned 3-0 victory. Boro were on the attack from the off and dominated the game, with goals from Mark Yeates, Leroy Lita and Nathan Porritt. Boro soon had a 1.4m offer for Benjani accepted, but interest was also shown from premier league club Wolves, so Boro had tough competition for his signature.
