Fellow Managers,

As we all know, theres a certain point in a players career, where he starts to get age and get worse. In football manager, this age seems to be in a period of 29 year olds to 34 years old, from my experience. The downgrading of stats is updated a lot each year FM is brought out, and it is now at the point where, if a player is of a certain age, there stats decline slowly. First, the Speed and Physical stats downgrade within a year, making the player slower and weaker. This will also downgrade his value. Next, an all round downgrade is notched up. Over a space of 5 years, the players Technique and main attributes (Attacking or Defending) will get worse. If anything, they should get better from experience surely? But anyway, after a few saves and good careers on FM10, i find myself in a small and depressing outlook on players of a certain age..

In my first save, i was amazed how players such as Joe Cole and Ashley Cole could end up as a free transfer a few seasons in? This got me worried, what he me even more worried was the fact that i had purchased a 30 year old player, one season in. His value went from 10M to 1.1M and the next season, he was given a free transfer. Since then, i have never signed a player over the age of 29. Unless of course, i'm managing a championship team, where the likes of Kikin Fonseca still appeal to me..

Examples of aging players that i'm unsure whether to buy or not...

David Beckham
Ronaldinho
Ronaldo
Mark Viduka
Andrea Pirlo
Michael Ballack

But i have made this thread to see if anyone else avoids such signings? Of course, i may just be a paranoid person, and i notice that Speed stats aren't needed to much for players like Steven Gerrard, who, after 5 years in the game, still destroys the Premier League. But please post a vote and comment onto this thread with your views and opinions of 30 year olds and aging players?

Thanks,
FFT.

PS: I am fully aware of the thread "ageing players" but it is completely different to this one.

I always avoid over 30 signings, they will decline too rapidly and so I refuse to buy them.

I buy them and love getting them on frees. It doesn't bother me.

If managing a lower league team then sign who you can regardless of age if its going to help you out. If managing at the top of the tree no way.

i will if there free but not a high fee for them

Another one i'm not so sure about to sign - Patrick Viera.

If I can get hem cheeply with relatively low wages then I would sign them but some of them are ridiculous so I dont bother

ive only ever signed ronaldo or beckham for big clubs but obv as a llm a worship oldies

I sign loads of them and they all are class. Deco, Vieira, Klose, Toni, Gallas.. all on free's, and serve the club well. You can't go wrong with over 30 players like them, they are proven and they play well.

& No offence but you seriously make some weird threads :p

With the exception of Ronaldo, yes I tend to buy players under 30. 32 is my limit unless I'm seriously stuck

If the correct money is offered then yes, otherwise I don't like them downgrading a lot in such a short period of time.

It all depends really:

You get some 30+ players who have a silly value/wage but sometimes these players are incredibly vital..especially in the CCC and so on. I dont think you should ever rule out a quality player if he is knocking on a bit.

Like 34 year old Laurent Robert is going very well for me in League 1 but he is just far too old that his next season is doubtful.

I know that in real life keepers, defenders etc are only getting to their peak at about 31 or 32 but in FM they deteriorate so rapidly. 30-31 (defenders and goalies only) is all I will sign unless I am a relegation/lower league team.

betends what team I am and more importantly what wages they want

FM is slightly unrealistic sometimes, some keepers like David James and Mark Schwarzer, they are playing better in recent years and in current seasons than they ever did before. (Not so much James but 2 seasons back, wow)

But on FM it's not like that, there stats just start to suck :'( But then, I suppose they can't predict what keepers will turn out quality at a late age, so fair play I suppose.

Keepers...yes

Full Backs...no

Centre Backs...yes

Holding Midfielders/Anchor Men....yes

Wingers....no

Playmakers...yes

Fw...not usually...unless they have amazing physical attributes.

well .. it dedpends on the player and the team need ..
i love to sign the big stars for free ... because they will be considered as bargain by the fans .
but i will not go for big cash on the player above 29 ...
in my last newcastle game i signed Villa for 21 millions $ and he was 32 years old .. it was not wise decision but i need a super striker at that time .
