I plan on taking Charlton Athletic back to where they belong - the FA Premier League.
On a very small budget (0 transfers - -1.5k wages), I have managed to guide us into the promotion spots in February.

But we're starting to come off the rails a bit; here's the story of our season so far:

Pre-season mainly consisted of bringing in a few solid signings; we began with a very small squad, and considering the budget that I had been given, I realised I would have to be going for loans, and so I scouted around.

Players in:
Javan Vidal - Man City - Loan
Zavon Hines - West Ham United - Loan
Ritchie de Laet - Manchester United - Loan
David Mooney - Reading - Loan
Nacer Barazite - Arsenal - Loan
Antoine Sibierski - Free Agent
Abubakari Yakubu - Free Agent
Mahan - Free Agent
Ger Hanley - Galway United - Free

Nothing really spectacular, just enough players to fit my 4-1-2-1-2 formation, and they have settled well into an already strong charlton team.
My top goalscorer is surprisingly Leon McKenzie, a player that I had highly under-rated, his goals coming from all kinds of positions, from screamers to poacheresque goals. My prize asset has to be Jonjo Shelvey, who is my top assist man with 16, and also 12 goals to boot! All that at 17 and in just 30 appearances makes a top class player.
My defence was very weak in the first half of the season, but we were dynamite up front, with goals coming from everywhere (My 4 midfielders - Semedo, Racon, Bailey, Shelvey - have got 29 goals between them), but we've managed to tighten up now. The signing of Yakubu was critical; he is a pacy, but also very intelligent full-back who is a Ghanain international, and he rejected offers from Leeds and Reading to join us.

That's pretty much it, we've been pretty much consistent with only a few slip ups, and are currently 10 points clear of MK Dons in 2nd. I'll be making monthly updates of the games, as we look to move into the Championship.

PS Could anyone tell me how to do screenshots, I'm a newbie 8-| Much appreciated.

Press ALT + F9 for screen shots, that will put the pictures into a folder called screenshots (Documents - Sports Interactive - Football Manager 2010 - Screenshots) and if you don't have a folder called screenshots just make one in the Footbal Manager folder :)

Anyway good luck, been waiting for a Charlton story.

Thanks for that :) Gotta learn somewhere. Nice to see you like Peterborough too :)
I'll be posting February's update ASAP, just got 2 games to play.

February started and ended with draws, but was most definitely not short of action.
Swindon 0 - 0 Charlton
A real bore draw, and only the second time this season that Charlton have failed to score.
Bristol Rovers 2 - 3 Charlton
A Leon McKenzie brace and an own goal all in the first half were enough to ensure victory for the Addicks despite Bristol Rovers staging a late fightback, with Duffy grabbing two goals in the last 20 minutes. This match also saw the debut of 17 year old centre-back Yado Mambo.
Charlton 3 - 1 Yeovil Town
3 goals in the opening 15 minutes was enough to silence Yeovil, with two sublime goals from McKenzie, and also an assist for him, as Shelvey got himself on the scoresheet. A comprehensive, but also very impressive victory.
Brighton 0 - 2 Charlton
Arguably the most important result of the month, and against an in-form team who are lying 5th at the table. We have struggled at times away from the Valley, but there were no such problems here as Zavon Hines scored his first goal in over 10 hours of football, with an absolute screamer from outside the box, before Shelvey headed in to wrap up the 3 points.
Southend 2 - 2 Charlton
An ambitious Southend side went at it from the off, and despite McKenzie giving Charlton an early lead, Gresko's free kick, and Barnard's beautifully executed chip over the head of Rob Elliot turned the game on it's head. Matt Spring, one of the most in form players in the Charlton side at the moment, with the long-term absence of Nick Bailey, scored a beautiful 30 yard goal to stretch Charlton's unbeaten record to 9 games.

News of the Month
The main talking points for this month were Zavon Hines returning to goalscoring form after his Christmas injury, scoring a belter against Brighton, and also Ivory Coast international Mahan speaking out about his unhappiness, after being unable to settle in London. Does this mean we'll be seeing the back of him in the summer, after only 6 months at the club?
Finally, rumours are circulating that Charlton is in the middle of take-over talks, with current chairman Richard Murray looking to step down from the club. Will this see a cash-injection or simply a return to stability, with the club having rising debts.

Our incredible home record continued this month, with the Valley becoming the most formidable venue in the Coca-Cola League 1. 17 games, 16 wins and 1 draw. Not bad at all!

Stay tuned for next month

March 2010
What looked like being a routine month ended in a nightmare in March, with just under ten games to go in the season.
Charlton 3 - 0 Stockport
Goals from McKenzie and Racon in the first half against an otherwise impressive Stockport gave Charlton the boost they needed before Deon Burton netted his first goal in over 13 hours of football to round off the match.
Millwall 1 - 2 Charlton
A closely fought game at the New Den saw Charlton come from a goal behind to take all three points after a Matthew Spring penalty equalised in the first half, and Zavon Hines met an inch-perfect Racon through ball to tuck away the winner.
Charlton 2 - 0 Gillingham
Hines continued his good goalscoring form to tuck away in the opening moments before Shelvey popped up to double the advantage in an otherwise uneventful match.
Huddersfield 5 - 1 Charlton
The shock of the month came in an abysmal display in Yorkshire (?). 5 first half goals could only be answered by a Zavon Hines consolation, to take Huddersfield second in the table, it what was an equal game, with Huddersfield simply managing to take every chance.

Other News
That defeat at the end of the month means that we are still 12 points clear at the top of the table rather than a potential 18, but 3 solid wins prior to that defeat means that promotion is still a realistic target. Nicky Bailey returned after a 2 month injury to play in 2 of the games this month, whilst Alex Stavrinou also debuted against Gillingham, setting up Shelvey's goal. Leon McKenzie scored his 20th goal of the season against Stockport, a brilliant achievement for the 32 year old, and Chris Powell signed a pre-contract agreement to become a Charlton coach next season.

Stay tuned..

April 2010
Step One completed - Charlton win the Championship!

MK Dons 2 - 3 Charlton
A game billed to be a close encounter, with MK Dons on a fine run of form seeing them into 3rd in the league, just behind 2nd placed Huddersfield. Charlton twice came from behind with goals from Burton and Racon, before Abubakari Yakubu scored his first goal for the club with a close range header to seal the three points.
Charlton 2 - 1 Carlisle
Zavon Hines slotted in to give Charlton the lead early on before good work from Leon McKenzie allowed Shelvey to tap into an empty goal for his 18th goal of the season in all competitions. Carlisle managed a consolation from the penalty spot, but it wasn't to stop Charlton.
Southampton 2 - 0 Charlton
A poor display by Charlton, and only the 3rd time they have been unable to score in 50 games. Southampton dominated from start to finish with goals from Sobolewski and Lambert, which meant that Huddersfield were only 9 points behind with 5 games to go.
Charlton 1 - 1 Colchester
A plucky Colchester grabbed a point, but this was the game that sealed promotion for the Addicks. Although they still hadn't won the league, a Zavon Hines screamer that was cancelled out by a penalty for Colchester was enough to secure the vital point.
Charlton 1 - 1 Norwich
Norwich gave Charlton a scare, holding on for 80 minutes to a 1-0 lead, with Maric missing a completely open goal, having tackled Rob Elliot. But McKenzie converted a Jonjo Shelvey cross to level, which meant that a win against Exeter next week would make Charlton the champions of League 1.
Exeter 0 - 3 Charlton
When they want to turn on the gas, they really do. Charlton stormed to victory, knowing more than a point would seal their Coca-Cola League 1 championship. Returning from a long-term injury, Nacer Barazite replaced the dissapointing Jonjo Shelvey to bag an impressive brace, and also setting up Sam Sodje, as Charlton won Coca Cola League 1 with 2 games to spare.

Other News
The most important news is naturally the fact that Charlton have completed stage 1 and have moved back into the championship. A lot of players are now looking for new contracts however, with a number of them having been brought in on short term contracts. Deon Burton has signed a new one for 2 years, taking a pay-cut from 5k to 3.4k. Hopefully next season, the new chairman will be able to provide a cash injection as we seek to move up the Championship. The win at Exeter was mirrored by Huddersfield, as they also gained promotion to the championship after an impressive season. Key players Jordan Rhodes and Alex Smithies taking most of the plaudits. Leeds have been assured a play-off spot with 2 games to spare, but if they are unable to get promoted, it may be followed by an exodus of players - including key striker Jermaine Beckford. Newcastle have won the Championship with considerable ease, while Chelsea stormed the Premiership, leading Manchester United by 12 points with 2 games to spare.

More reaction from the promotion win, contintental awards and the World Cup 2010 to follow..

you know, I had a feeling.
i meant approximately anyway, they're around the middle of england so it'll do :)
please keep following :) got another post coming soon, just coming into the world cup.

May 2010
With the league title already wrapped up and only two days to go, May/June is more a time of sorting the squad out for next season, and then sitting back to enjoy the World Cup.

Charlton 2 - 2 Leeds
The last home game of the season at the Valley turned out to be an absolute thriller. Jason Crow and Patrick Kisnorbo gave the away side a 2-0 lead at half-time, but an inspirational team-talk worked wonders, as Antoine Sibierski scored his first league goal of the season, before doubling that tally in the final minute to keep the incredible home record for the season - unbeaten in 23.
Oldham 2 - 2 Charlton
The final game of the season ended in another draw, with Thierry Racon looking to have sealed all 3 points by scoring two brilliant goals, but Oldham pulled it backk to gain themselves a point.

News
The end of the season brought tears for many a footballing fan, be it out of joy or sadness. Tottenham fans would have been celebrating well into the night having secured Champions League football, beating off the likes of Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool, who finished 7th.
The French League was won by Olympique Lyon, with surprise contenders Stade Rennais finishing second after a brilliant campaign.
Werder Bremen just pipped Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga by a single point to win their first league title since 2004.
Juventus won the Serie A, storming past opposition such as Fiorentina (2nd) and Inter Milan (3rd), with AC Milan and Roma both underachieving.
Real Madrid beat Barcelona to the League title, and the cheers of joy at the Bernabeu must have been music to the ears of Florentino Perez, as his Galacticos dominated La Liga.
(League Tables are attached)

As for Charlton, the Season ended on a high and the awards are as follows: Thierry Racon and Abubakari Yakubu both made it into the League One team of the season, having performed brilliantly, and consistenly throughout the season. Chris Solly (18) won the Highest Average Rating of the Blue Square Premier whilst on loan at Oxford with an incredible 7.83.
The Charlton team of the year was:
Elliot
Yakubu Sodje de Laet Youga

Semedo
Bailey Racon
Shelvey

McKenzie Hines

The new expectations for 2010/2011 season is to achieve a top-half finish, perfectly achievable for a club of Charlton's stature. In fact, the bookies make them just 16-1 on to gain promotion to the Premiership this season, which would be an incredible turnaround.
This should be a pivotal season in Charlton's history.
Mike Groves is the most talented player to be spotted out of the youth academy, with Les Reed stating that he thought he could be good enough to become a leading Championship centre-back.

Transfer Budget - 80k
Wage Budget - 15k pw.

This should be plenty for my first season in the Championship, as I already feel that I have a capable side.
I will be back next with pre-season results, new signings and a squad list.

As I come into the new season, any suggestions or tips on players to buy would be appreciated.

2010-2011 Season, the Coca Cola Championship

Returning to the Championship after a one year absence was going to need some time to settle in, so after a busy transfer window, obtaining no less than 7 players, we were able to also fit in 5 pre-season matches.

Transfers
Zavon Hines (West Ham United) - Free
Zavon was on loan with us for the whole of last season, and he matured greatly, getting into double figures for goals and goals laid on. Having been released at the end of the season, he was snapped up immediately, as the first signing of the transfer window.
0,,12562%7E3613219,00.jpg

Jack Cork (Chelsea) - 6 month loan
Already an experienced Championship player, Jack is a promising defensive midfielder, who will doubtless become very useful with the absence of Jose Semedo until December. Was meant to join in January, but Charlton already had 4 Under-21 loanees in.
JackCork_559594.jpg

Michael Woods (Chelsea) - Free
Michael has also played in this level for a couple of teams, and has performed very well. Infamous in this division for his long shots, he is also a very composed central midfielder, who should fit in comfortably with the other players in that position.
49557110-0b95-4fba-8ef9-66b19705b811.jpg

Calum Davenport (West Ham United) - Free
A very able centre-back, he is unavailable until January due to medical reasons, but should be a very good signing when he does eventually return.
Davenport.jpg

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas (Arsenal) - Free
A promising versatile player, Emmanuel-Thomas can play all along the midfield, and also in the central defense position. Defence was highlighted as our weakest link last season and Jay should establish some stability in that role.
00cc5b0c-afd7-4339-af46-b7128fb4dbb8.jpg

Nacer Barazite (Arsenal) - 6 month loan
A long term loanee last season, Nacer is now accustomed to the surroundings at the Valley. Impressed last season, and will be staking his claim against Jonjo again this campaign.
Nacer-Barazite-Arsenal-2008-Pre-Season_1242245.jpg

Jerzy Dudek (Free Agent) - Free
Jerzy is a very accomplished goalkeeper, and with Darren Randolph leaving on a free in the summer, and Ger Hanley going on loan to Brighton, it was neccessary to provide not only back-up to Rob Elliot, but a competitor. He may only be a short-term measure, but Dudek has still got the ability to compete at this level.

Pre-Season
Charlton 2 - 5 West Ham United
A topsy turvy game; Ashton bagged a brace in the opening half an hour, before Zavon Hines pulled one back before half time. A Chris Solly penalty evened things up in the 70th minute, before West Ham put their foot down. On the 80th minute, Dean Ashton completed a hat-trick, before goals in the 91st and 94th minute for West Ham completed what on paper looks like a rout.
Charlton 1 - 1 Sunderland
A quiet, but solid game from the Addicks. Chinedu Obasi of Sunderland gave them the lead before Nacer Barazite capitalised on a defensive error to tuck away the equaliser.
Charlton 0 - 2 Bolton
A professional performance from Bolton was no doubt helped by a lack of any real drive or ambition from Charlton as they sat back and let Bolton control the game. Goals from Gardner and Davies won the game.
Charlton 1 - 3 Chelsea
Chelsea showed their supreme class, taking a 3 goal lead in the opening half an hour, with goals from Nicolas Anelka (2), and Alex. Two of these goals came from set pieces. Charlton grabbed a nice consolation on half time by Leon McKenzie, and what could have been the start of the come back, but Chelsea held on strong to deny them.
Charlton 5 - 0 Market Drayton
A first win of pre-season came against hapless Market Drayton. Serge Deble, signed two seasons ago, before being sent on loan to Angers in France, scored a marvellous hat-trick, and he could be the competitor to Zavon Hines that was needed last season. A sublime finish from Emmanuel-Thomas and a coolly taken goal from Barazite finished them off.

1 Win, 1 Draw and 3 losses is arguably an unimpressive pre-season, but I rarely take much notice of pre-season and next month kicks off with a game against Birmingham, who we have already faced 3 times under my reign.

Squad List 2010/2011
1. Jerzy DUDEK
2. Abubakari YAKUBU
3. Kelly YOUGA
4. Nicky BAILEY (c)
5. Miguel LLERA

August 2010 coming up..

---------- Post added at 12:33 AM ---------- Previous post was yesterday at 05:58 PM ----------

August 2010
August is always a busy month, and with 7 games played, starting on the 7th August, it was always going to be a tough first month back in the Championship, and so it proved..

Birmingham 0 - 2 Charlton
A return to the top flight was marked by a brilliant 2-0 victory against newly-relegated Birmingham City. It was always going to be a tough game, but an absolute wonder goal from debutant Michael Woods from 30 yards gave us the lead before Serge Deble doubled that advantage on the half hour mark. Birmingham made a few half-hearted attempts to get back into the game, but it ended in a very satisfying 2-0 victory.
Gillingham 1 - 4 Charlton (League Cup 1st Round)
Two wins in two and looking good; Charlton never looked back when Shelvey gave them the lead early on, and Hines made it 2 before half time. Gillingham pulled one back, before conceding a penalty, which youngster Alex Stavrinou converted to score his first goal for the club. In the final minutes, Gillingham conceded another penalty, which Antoine Sibierski scored for his first of the season and into the Second Round.
Charlton 2 - 2 Doncaster
Arguably the most frustrating result of the month. A fantastic performance from Charlton in the first half only resulted in a 1-0 lead, after having 2 goals disallowed, and having given the crossbar a good battering. Heffernan converted a penalty conceded by Emmanuel-Thomas early in the second half to make it 1-1. But fantastic work from Jonjo Shelvey played Leon McKenzie in to double his tally for the season and make it 2-1 with 10 minutes to go. But in the final moments, Doncaster scored a last gasp equaliser to break Charlton's fans hearts.
Portsmouth 0 - 0 Charlton
Another game against one of the recently relegated sides, and a very good performance from an impressive Charlton side. Away from home, one might have expected them to bottle it but they stood firm and put on a few counter-attacks, but to no avail. Neither team managed to take advantage of their chances, and it ended nil all, probably the fairest result.
Charlton 1 - 1 QPR
Very nearly our first loss at the Valley under Sam's reign, with QPR having taken the lead mid-way through the second half. But a brilliant cross from Ivorian Mahan was headed by Hines onto Cerny for an unfortunate own goal, deep into stoppage time.
Portsmouth 0 - 1 Charlton (League Cup 2nd Round)
A 2nd game of 3 in one week ended in victory for Charlton, although I'm sure they would have preferred this was the Championship match instead. A fantastic cross from Mahan early in the first half was converted by Shelvey, and that was all it took to beat Portsmouth this time round.
Bolton 3 - 1 Charlton
Having lost to Bolton in pre-season, there is no doubt they would have wanted to have got one over Luis Sanchez's men. But hopes of that looked unlikely when Chung-Yong gave Bolton an early lead. But fantastic work from Bailey and Shelvey let Hines in who tapped into an open goal to make it one apiece. But in the end, 3 games in a week proved to much for the Charlton players, as they conceded two goals in the last 10 minutes to capitulate against a stronger Bolton side, goals coming from O'Brien and Chung-Yong again.

News
The first month of the new season, and things aren't looking too bad for Charlton. Having played all of the relegated Premier League sides, it would be fair to say there is an easier stretch ahead. But as the game against Doncaster showcased, no game in this division will be easy and strength in depth is going to be tested. For that reason, David Elm was brought in on loan from Fulham to provide cover for McKenzie and the out-of-form Deon Burton. This will last until January, with an option to extend.
Jim Magilton of QPR won Manager of the Month for the Coca-Cola Championship in August, which shows that we did well to hold them to a draw.

More to follow, as we progress in the Championship, and also a 3rd Round League Cup tie against Newcastle United to enjoy..

September 2010
A tough month, but every month in the Championship is and there were some very dissapointing performances from the Addicks this month.

Charlton 1 - 1 Sheffield United
When we met Sheffield United, they were sitting top of the league with goals coming from everywhere but it was us who took the led early on with a nice finish from Nicky Bailey. But with the goals flowing for the Blades, Ched Evans scored his 5th goal of the season after being played in brilliantly to beat Dudek.
Reading 0 - 0 Charlton
Having visited this stadium in the League Cup and losing 1-0 after a contraversial red card, Charlton were looking to avenge that defeat, but they found a sturdy Reading side. Despite some nice football, Charlton could not break them down and it ended 0-0. This game was more noticeable for injuries to Sam Sodje and Jerzy Dudek, key defensive players
Charlton 3 - 1 Cardiff
A very impressive home victory against an in form Cardiff came courtesy of an early goal from Barazite, before Joe Ledley levelled before the break. But late second half goals from debutant loanee David Elm and Pawel Kazmierczak's cool finish for his first at Charlton was enough to settle the matter.
Newcastle 4 - 0 Charlton
A poor performance from Charlton saw them trampled at St. James' Park and ended with injuries to Yakubu and Jack Cork, leaving us with youngster Yado Mambo in centre-back, where he had a torrid time against the likes of Xisco and Geovanni. The 4-0 scoreline in the end didn't flatter Newcastle.
Charlton 2 - 2 Crystal Palace
Charlton's incredible home record continued in this game, but it was a game they arguably could and should have won. An early penalty was converted by Nicky Bailey before Crystal Palace equalised just after the break. But a fantastic ball from David Elm set Zavon Hines on his way to coolly finish before celebrating in front of the home fans. But with five minutes to go, Miguel Llera fell asleep on a free kick and Sean Scannell broke free behind him to head home a dissapointing late equaliser.
Sheffield Wednesday 2 - 1 Charlton
The scoreline failed to flatter Sheffield Wednesday as they dominated this encounter against a surprisingly lacklustre Charlton team. Claudio Lopez scored an impressive finish early on before adding a beautiful free-kick. Charlton's equaliser came through debutant Bjorn Helge Riise, from a fantastic cross by Chris Solly, replacing the injured Yakubu. But Charlton failed to offer anything more and the score ended 2-1.

News
The biggest news is the capture of two Fulham reserve players, Bjorn Helge Riise and David Elm. They are two very strong and experienced players, who have already shown how much they can add to the team. With McKenzie failing to find the form he had last season, and Deon Burton really struggling for fitness, they could be vital in the coming months. September was ravaged my injuries to key players, and a loss of form for our front men, Jonjo Shelvey being particularly dissapointing, and our one win came through loanee Barazite who had replaced him. We'll be looking for a much more impressive month in October, and hopefully get a few games on the board. We are now 17th...

October 2010
The most frustrating month of my managerial career. Having ended September with a loss, we then carried that form into October..

Charlton 0 - 1 Coventry
Our first home loss for over 30 games. After an abysmal first half, Charlton came out and played Coventry off the park for 30 minutes before a counter attack finished in a goal for Michael McIndoe. A deflating defeat after such a good performance.
Middlesbrough 2 - 1 Charlton
Middlesbrough dominated the first half, but only had one goal to prove it. And you may have been forgiven for thinking Charlton may have come out with something when Zavon Hines pulled a goal back, but it wasn't to be as Adam Johnson scored with 10 minutes to go to seal the points for the home side.
Swansea 3 - 1 Charlton
Nick Bailey gave Charlton an early lead, but their defence let them down again, conceding a number of sloppy goals, with Jerzy Dudek not having a chance with any of them. 4 losses on the trot, and confidence starting to drain.
Charlton 4 - 1 Scunthorpe
A brilliant performance linked with a change in formation, moving two players into the wide positions. And Barazite showed how comfortable he was in his new wide right position by pouncing on a rebound to score in the opening 2 minutes. Scunthorpe equalised marvelously with Joe McCann scoring an absolute belter 10 minutes later, and it looked like being another frustrating day. But Serge Deble was having a fantastic game and managed to score a very cool finish before laying on Deon Burton to score his first of the season. Deon then sealed the game brilliantly with a 30 yard goal, and the smile on the manager's face told the whole story.
Bristol City 3 - 2 Charlton
The most frustrating game of the month. Bristol City were sitting pretty at the top of the table having conceded only 5 goals this season, and having kept an amazing 6 games without conceding. But Charlton were having an in form day. Bristol took a 2 goal lead just after half time, but substitutes Pawel Kazmierczak and David Elm converted brilliantly inside 2 minutes to level the game. After that there was only one team in it and Charlton pushed and pushed for the winner, David Elm hitting the crossbar from a corner. But Danny Haynes countered in the 92nd minute to score what turned out to be an absolute heart-breaking winner.

News
A club mutiny seems to be taking place with a number of players claiming that the team is under-achieving, which is very damagining to the squad harmony. I personally think this is a little unfair, because our league position belies our performances and with a little more care in defence I believe we can push into the mid-table zone. Two new signings have been secured on 3 month deals to come in January - Diego Placente of Bordeaux and Funsi Ojo of PSV. I take solitude in the fact that most of the toughest games are now over. We now have 3 must win games, and I'm hoping we can take heart from a good performance against a strong Bristol City into November.

Join me..

Yh nice story keep it going. It's a pretty long read though mate, which is a good thing I can tell you put a lot of effort into this, very well detailed. :)
