Hay FMbase. I'm currently playing in the Blue Square South with stockport and wanted to build a defensively solid tactic. My own football philosophy is based around a solid back four. I care not for possession, the other team can hold the ball for as long as they like, as long as they don't score of course.

I want the formation to be able to give the opposition space while they are in possession to commit players forward. As soon as we win the ball, the ball must be flung forward with urgency to the wingers to be able to take advantage of the space created by the committed opposition players.

Although, I'm not sure of what I want the players to do when the counter attack is not on. I am a fan of the lone striker formations like the 4-1-2-2(wide)-1 or 4-2(deep)-3-1.

Awaiting everyone's thoughts.
Thanks in advance.

Retaining possession is the best form of defence, if you have the ball at your feet the opponent can't score for sure. Also, since you are at this low level use conservative pressing.

Have you tried a 4141 formation ? It's an even more defensive version of 4123 that still allows you to quickly counter attack from the wings.

The ME is smart enough to distinguish between counter and non-counter opportunities. This is why I've found that, even when playing counter, it's best to go for lower tempo and short passing in order to not give away possession with pointless long balls. In non-counter situations your team mostly plays a slow buildup. When the counter is on however your players will look to move the ball quickly up the field.

Like detached said, possession is the best form of defense. You contradict yourself OP by saying that you want great defense but do not care about possession. Possession is critical for every type of tactic and style of play.
