I'm currently managing Millwall in the first season in the Championship and have had a rather steady start but with one problem.....I keep losing away from home.

We've played 9 at home and are currently unbeaten, winning 5 of them.

We've played 10 away from home and have won just once, also drew once but have lost the other 8.

I play the same tactic at home and away which is a counter 4-1-2-2-1 DM wide formation.

Team instructions:
More direct
passing
Work ball into box
Play out of defence
Play narrower
Stick to positions
Higher tempo
Be More disciplined
Close down more
Get stuck in
Prevent short gk distribution

Any suggestions?

Yes.

At least half your TIs are conflicting. Simplify it. Remove most or all of them. Decide how you want to play and only add if you see you need them.

You don't think posting the roles, duties and philosophy/fluidity are important to include?

Right, yeah sorry about that.

Fluidity: Flexible

GK(D) - Pass it Shorter, Distribute to FBs

FB(Auto.) - Dribble Less, Mark Tighter, Cross from Byline, Run Wide with Ball
CD(D) - Pass it Shorter
CD(D) - Pass it Shorter
FB(Auto.) - Mark Tighter, Cross from Byline, Run Wide with Ball

DM(D)
BBM(S) - Close Down More, Tackle Harder, Mark Tighter, Get Further Forward, More Risky Passes
BBM(S) - Pass it Shorter

W (A) - Roam from Position
W (A) - Roam from Position
DLF (A)

Remember that when you're at home you can play open football, but that's not always the case when you're away.

Look at Arsenal last year.

A front 3 all on attack will separate from the rest of the bunch in possession and you'd need to keep an eye on how they defend. I'm assuming it's and AML/AMR combination, since you don't say. Your team will struggle to find them since you're ordering almost everyone to pass short and no freedom to deviate from that.

Speaking of... too many PIs and TIs. Half of them do not make sense. Why cross from byline on the fullbacks if they're never going to get to the byline on a Support duty? Why Play Out Of Defence if you're using a counter attacking tactic? Who will play direct, since that's a TI?

What was/is the idea behind the tactic?

What WJ said (as usual - the man KNOWS!). Plus: why the fbs are on auto? Do you know what auto is/does? Plus you re telling one fb to dribble less (why?!) yet expect him to run wide with ball!

Unless you use somebody elses tactics there is no substitute to STUDYING around the internet and learning what everything does.

Have an idea about what you want your team to do - start simple and go from there. Too many TIs/PIs esp if you re not sure what they are doing is NOT the way to go. Start a test save and use it to test tactical changes. Start with few or no TIs/PIs and then add according to what you see in matches and or want to be happening!
