So, with Everton 3rd season, got Akinfeev in goal. Just got knocked out in quarter finals of league cup on penalties, he didn't save any of the 15 penalties he attempted to save...

Which reminded me I have never seen him save one.

So, are there any keepers that are especially good at this?

thats very strange, not 1?? i have always felt that there should be a saving penalty stat for gk on Fm, its the same for players with theirs, this should definately be considered for Fm11 :p

Yeah not one... :S

Last time I one a penalty shootout was because they put one wide

Never seen them put a penalty high or wide on FM.
However, in relation to your question, Rene Adler seems to save a fair few on my Wolfsburg game, give him a try.

I have never seen many penalties saved by any keeper. It seems in regulation time if you get a penalty, they practically giving you a goal, and in penalty shootouts it seems only one penalty will be saved in order for there to be a winner.

i wish that fm11 change the way a penalty is taken and saved..as i feel its not near to realism though

can everyone stay on topic. this is turning into a 'i wish fm did this' kind of thread. we already have ''what would you like to see in FM2011'' thread so go there.

Only post if you are going to suggest a good penalty stopper.

i would say a GK with good reflexes, handling, anticipation, agility, decisions, concentration and possibly composure would be a good penalty stopper. Stamina would also be a consideration as penalty shootouts occur at the end of long, hard fought matches, so a GK who can stay fresh thanks to good stamina would be useful

much agreed with stamina comment. definately reflexes too, where is the Fm11 thread?

Makes sense, though Akinfeev is great/ok at all of those apart from composure...

technically, i dont think its possible for a keeper to be a "good pen saver" its not possible, its just luck when a keeper saves a penalty, the taker always has the upper hand, he picks his spot and takes it. you just have to guess when ure the keeper and if ure lucky you save it, so if there was a 'luck' stat, then yeh, the keeper with the highest luck stat would be the best

The only time i've ever seen a keeper save a penalty on FM is when they smash it down the middle. They never seem to save them when it goes into the corner. Ridiculous.

i am a goalkeeper by trade. Whilst certainly the art of saving a pen involves a lot of guesswork and luck, there is a technique and a certain set of attributes.

The stats that keepers like dudek/cassilas/reina (all top pen savers in real life) share are cenrtainly agility and reflexes. You are often guessing/anticipating which way the striker will go, this guess can be deduced from his body shape, which foot he uses, where hes looking (theres plenty of other tell tale signs, keepers amke good poker players lol)
Combine this guess with top agility/reflexes and you have a much higher chance of saving a pen than a big, tall, bulky (not slow but certainly less agile) keeper like kirkland, cech etc. And thats not to say the likes of cech/kirkland wont save a pen, but im pretty confident casillas/reina/dudek have better penalty saving records.

i am aware im straying off topic like i warned others not to, the perk of being a mod eh? :p

It's not really off topic though, as you outline the real-life basis for the attributes which should be important in FM. Whether they are in the game is maybe a discussion for the "i wish" threads. Well, that was off topic a bit.

OT: Yeah, I've ever seen a penalty saved when it's smashed to either side and the opposition always scores on their penalties if it's in regulation or extra time. In penalty shootouts they're a bit more jittery for some reason.

Personally I find R.Adler a good one for the penalties and in general, Akinfeev never eally seems to perform for me, perhaps a little over rated in my opinion.
Other option maybe M.Neuer. Niether are going to be cheap though.
