Hello,

I am trying to create three good tactics for my Hyde United at the beginning of the game but it seems that it's almost impossible considering the results that I get later.. oO) I do not know what is going on, but really it seems to me that there is still a lack of realism in this game. Because it is my 4th or 5th start this time I checked also which tactic is the most suitable for my team by use of FM Scout.

So at the beginning I want to show you results that I got at the beginning of new season.

Let me start with the first tactic that I created. The tactic is offensive, for matches in which I am the favorite. It is 4-4-2 with two highly attacking wingers. If you check the roles of players on the pitch you can see that there is a lot of balance so the tactic should work smoothly. I applied also proper team instructions according to mentality -> then style of passing -> tempo -> closing down -> defensive line... etc. I tried to apply these team instructions as suitable as I could. As you can see in the result despite of win 5-2 I had only 10 attempts of shots. So frustrating...

The next one formation is 5-4-1. I created this tactic to control the game with opponents which are similar to my team regarding the overall attributes of players. Falkirk for sure is stronger team but I decied to try this tactic due to a game at home.

The last one is a formation which I prepared to play counter-attack at games away and also for stronger teams than mine. As you can see I set the defensive line little bit deeper so I should invite opponent to attack me and then counter... but of course - it does not work. I set also little bit more closing down so I should have more interceptions during game. OK, I am not sure which one is better to use in this case. Use of less closing down can be also good idea and it can work better due to invitation of opponent little bit deeper. But still results are tragic...

If you check the team instructions you can see that I applied realistic tips for my players, arranged in logical consistency.

Really... I do not know what I am doing wrong. Any tips?

This is just my opinion, WJ is the best for giving out tips, but in your first two tactics you have no holiding midfielder. Secondly do you need all those team instructions?

Thanks mate for your reply with this very good article from lama3 but I have already read it. Also I play FM since 2006.

Your first tactic is a 4-2-4. It's just way too attacking, unless you're desperately trying to score a goal late in the game. FWIW, Attacking mentality already has high closing down, high line, high tempo, direct passing etc, so you don't necessarily need to add it as well. You seem to want to play direct and attacking, but Look for Overlap is a strange addition as it'll ask your wingers to play narrower, less attacking and hold up up the ball for IWBs who aren't supposed to overlap anyway.

The Control tactic is a mess of TIs, most of which are probably unnecessary. It also features attacking wingers who will cross into an empty (or only the false 9 at best) box and two creators (AP/A and F9) who will create for.... no one, except maybe the F9 himself. So most of this tactic depends on the F9 having a good game.

As much as I hate the wide diamond formation, role and duty wise, it's the better one of the lot. You have TI overload again. Counter is a cautious mentality. It already has a fairly low tempo, low closing down, deepish D-Line and direct passing by the defensive players. You don't NEED to set things like closing down. There is a default.

I always say, don't add TIs unless you see you need them. Definitely don't add a mass of them at once, because it's difficult to then work out what isn't working for you.

Also, for all three tactics, have a plan of how you want to play. Read the instructions and role/duty descriptions and then piece together that plan.

How long you've been playing FM is irrelevant. You've read Pairs and Combinations, but you haven't applied any of it. You also admitted that you don't know what you're doing ;)

Start with the basics first, much like I did in my thread. You'd be surprised at how good a 'vanilla' tactic can play already.

Ok guys, so I will try to go without any instructions ;)

I applied few combinations. Like combination of two stopers and one cover in 5-4-1.

Also in 4-4-2 diamond there is one support attacker and the poacher. As it is counter attacking tactic I put deep lying playmaker and one box to box midfielder as it was written in this article...

In which tactic was there the deep lying playmaker and box to box midfielder?

So, WJ did you give up?
On what? What have you added and done after that lengthy post of mine? You don't answer questions. You didn't offer any thoughts on our posts. It doesn't look like you've done anything at all.

I told you that I put in 4-4-2 formation, player roles same like in the article from lama3. Also you can find in the 5-4-1 tactic that 3 central defenders are set Cover-Sweeper-Cover which should work nomally but it does not.

Also, I gave a try to go without any TI with vanila tactics like you said and these tactic work even worse than my. Really, I would like to see someone like you who manage lower league team. And i do not mean 2nd english league or 3rd, but Vanarama where everything works like a piece of sh...t

Yeah, that's not info.

I do the exact same thing at every club, in any league, in any country.

I'm not the one struggling. You are. 'Some results' of my games isn't going to help you. You're putting next to no effort into your game, the understanding of your tactic or tactics in general or this thread.

Go read the guides again by wwfan and llama3. Come up with a vision of how you want to play and use their guides to put that into action. Try to understand why they're recommending what they are. Watch your games then for things that aren't working like you're expecting them to. Look at any issues you might have. Then post the tactic and that info here. Any questions you have while doing that, I'd be happy to answer.
