For the very first time i would like to share my Football Manager experience with you.

I grew up in Margate, although have lived away for the last 8 years, returning to see my family intermittently. I grew up going to Margate games with my Granddad, when we got ourselves into the Conference back in the late nineties and early naughties and were only relegated after the council messed our ground up and we had to be removed from the league. (SEE BELOW 2005)

Margate has started getting a lot better in the last few years but it was a town on its knees for a long time and i remember as youngsters the hope that football gave us. Even though we all supported West Ham, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal etc, we would always be brought together by our little local club

So here we go, trying to make this weird, wonderful little club a World Superpower, and drag the town up with it.

After entering Hartsdown Park as Manager I looked around me and saw good men, good men i could work with, men who had sweated blood to get this club to where they are. Things aren't bad financially. 150,000 pounds balance, a 20k transfer budget and a 15k wage budget in the Vanarama Conference South is nothing to be sniffed at. Newly promoted Margate are tipped for big things and the board and media are expecting a play-off finish and have hired a 27 year old with no badges and only Sunday league experience, but the 1 journalist who shows up to the press conference is excited for some reason. He knows the local Thanet Works League inside out and knows this guy. "Forced" to stop playing after getting too fat and lazy, with a 20 a day cigarette habit and a nasty football manager addiction, I once turned up to a fourth division game where only 10 of my teammates had turned up, and I was still made to run the line. After moving away in 2007, I plied my trade in Leeds, Manchester and Norwich, my peak being scoring the opener and winning a penalty in a 4-2 win for my University halls.

After filling my staff roles i turned my attention to the first team squad signing RB Paul Rodgers from Bromley for 4k, M/AM RL Kaine Felix from Boston Utd for 3k and a 22 year old RB called Bradley Hamilton on a pay by play basis.

Who cares about friendlies and i left them to my assistant to get straight into the action, Which is where i leave you.

Margate 0 - 0 Truro

A blustery day makes me realise how big a task and how difficult this challenge is going to be on this FM. Hardly any chances from either side but Nikki Bull repaid the faith he was shown to remain as captain with a couple of good stops. The goalkeeper the only performer in a drab game. Already questions are asked about whether a 4-2-3-1 will work at this level and we shall see

1st Update

Whitehawk 2 - 2 Margate

After a very lucky first half goal from Nathan Green to take the lead, we concede just before half time. We then take the lead through sub Luke Moore after a triple substitution and a switch to possession football only to be hit on the counter attack. To round it off David Hunt What a C......haracter gets himself sent off on 85 minutes for a second bookable offence
View attachment 195757

After the game i sign a free transfer on a pay by pay, ST and general utility forward Lewis Wilson
View attachment 195756
Havant and Waterloo 1 - 3 Margate

It really is a Jolley boys outing as Cristian Jolley replaces newboy Wilson and scores 2 goals in the last 5 minutes including an injury time penalty to take the win. Kaine Felix' s opener and general play is enough to earn him the man of the match. Big first win

I also sign Julian Serrano (D/MC) after this game to bolster the 2 DM positions after i notice early on that fitness is going to be a huge problem at this level
View attachment 195755

Margate 2 - 2 Wealdstone

Charlie Allen scores a blinder early on, his contract is up in November and he has no intention of signing an extension, and really shows me what ill be missing. Wealdstone peg back with a wonder-goal of their own. After the break its those boys again, Nathan Green with a defence splitting pass to Jolley who slots it home. My defence is then sliced open after a mistake from David hunt what a c....haracter and i am really starting to hate my backline.

I end the night unbeaten, and its only the 18th of August in game. I keep everyone updated as i play and try to play when i can

Rest of August

Basingstoke Away

Ladapo has first start up front after previous post, not match fit but looks lively going close in the eary stages. But nightmare for Nathan Green, giving away a penalty in a nothing position, which is cooly slotted away. Ladapo misses a few chances and i make the decision to throw on Luke Moore and former FM14 legend Sam Rents for Nathan Green. Frustratingly Margate have had 4 clear cut chances and are knocking on the door, FINALLY SOMEONE ANSWERS! From a corner, Brett Johnson the centreback thumps a header home into the top left.

Result - 1 - 1

Dartford at Home

All kent match up here against 4th from bottom Dartford.
After battering them we get a goal through a header from Kaine Felix only to throw that lead away immediately afterwards from a shot from the edge of the area. Then something magic happens, Felixs cuts inside, then outside, then inside again and slots the perfect pass through to Ladapo, GOOOOAAAALLLLL! A nothing 2nd half follows and Kaine Felix picks up another man of the match award

2 -1 win

Concord away

A game just 2 days later. After going 2 down Danny Green pegs one back before Glenn Wilson gets sent off for a second yellow then David Hunt what a c......haracter scores an own goal

3 -1 Defeat

And that is the end of August and here is how it stands. I'm just finding my feet with best way to post this, if anyones interested do let me know as i want the flow to be there

September

St Albans at home

Jolley comes off th bench to score an 88th minute winner.A delightful ball from Sam Rents made it. Luke Moore had a poor game after he came to me complaining about 1st team football

1 nil WIN

Ebbsfleets at home

1st Away win of the season for our opponents. A lacklustre display and im really worried about this side. Still looking for additions

2 nil DEFEAT

Eastbourne Boro away

What a game!
Paul Rodgers returns from injury to right back and sets up Luke Moore for Margates 1st goal, Eastbourne peg back and then Jolley misses a penalty just before half time. Ladapo is brought on for Jolley and scores the 2nd, only for the lead to be thrown away again. Then in the 86th minute Ladapo threads the ball through for Luke Moore to give Margate the win.

3 - 2 WIN

Gosport away

Things start badly as Gosport get the pener early on in the first half. Charlie Allen then slices open the defence and Kaine Felix finishes with aplomb. Then the second half comes. In the 85th minute Allen, with military precision, fires aa rocket of a through ball and Bradley Hamilton runs onto it and smashes it into the roof of the net. Kaine Felix then kills the game off in the 88th minute and wins himself a Man of the Match award. Brilliant result for Margate

3-1 WIN

East Thurrock Away: FA CUP 2ND QUALIFYING ROUND REPLAY

Cannot believe we have lost this game. Battered East Thurrock but wasn't to be. There goes the revenue from the FA Cup and im starting to worry about my now 0 balance

1 Nil Defeat

Weston Supermare at home

Kaine Felix give us the lead but a negative half time teamtalk means we take a 2-1 DEFEAT. Must keep it positive from now on

Oxford Away

Poor first half but some positives in the second half. Charlie Allen plays well again but wont discuss new contract as feels squad not strong enough

1 nil DEFEAT

After 5 players come to me regaarding our underaccheivement, i promise a tactical change and make the decision to adjust the budget and commit to a couple new signings

John Paul Kissock from Ebbsfleet for 13.75k
View attachment 194905

Aristote Amisi Kamaneno from Wealdstone for 19k

Bath at home

A switch to 4-4-2, strong debuts from Kammy and Kissock, 2 goals from Jolley, 1 from Felix Kaine and an own goal make this my most convincing victory and at a time when i am under increasing pressure in my job. Danny Green runs the show on the left wing and gets Man of the Match

4 nil WIN

Truro Away

Another poor first half display. Truro have a goal disallowed and we somehow make it into half time at nil nil. Second half we really step it up and batter down the door but heartbreak! In the 83rd minute we concede. The players show great character though and we eqquaalise through Christian Jolley in the 87th minute

1-1 DRAW

Some difficult times in October but Mike Bassett would be proud with how its been dealt with

John Paul Kissock puts in another great performance and bags man of the match. Deserved a lot more from the game but the narrow win is enough to propel us into 3rd.The only goal of the game comes through an own goal after some great play by Kissock

Whithawkat home
Wonderful performance from the lads and things are looking good. The quality of play is very encouraging and we are starting to string some lovely moves together. Kaine Felix is starting to look like an inspired signing as he gets yet another man of the match. Ladapo makes it through another 30 minutes without injury and even gets on the scoresheet. Would like to play him every game but he keeps getting injured. Am half considering another signing but I am currently 100k in the red and don't think I should make it any worse

David Hunt earns his Margate rhyming slang

I am sitting in the office one day going through some paperwork when I hear a knock at the door. Stuart Cash my assistant quickly comes in,'David Hunt wants to talk to you, you want me to f*** him off?'

'Alright gaffer, how you doing?' Hunt walked in before I had the chance to answer, Stuart leaves us alone.

'I'm good David, bit busy though, how can I help you?'

'I'm worried about the lack of first team football here and I'm not sure if I should stay if I'm not playing. I'm 33 now'

'Best I can do is give you a few games from the bench and if you perform wecan talk about some more first team games'

'There's no way ill be able to prove myself with such little game time'

'Listen Hunt, don't be a c...character. Think about what you are doing here.If this is a heat of the moment thing you need to take a step back and think about what you are doing. I don't want unhappy players at the club and I'll have to move you on if this cant be resolved'

'Maybe I will need to leave then.' I can see it in his eyes that he thinks I'm bluffing

'Consider it done David, now f*** off out my sight, you're dead to me'

Myself and Stuart then have to spend the afternoon ringing around and seeing if anybody wants him for free. Unbelievably League 2 Accrington agree to take him off our hands.

View attachment 194759

I ring David. 'Are you f***ing joking me?'

'I deserve more money than that Kane.'

'I cant believe what I'm hearing, you've scored more own goals than goals, you've been sent off in a quarter of all the games you have played. Me and Stu rang round for 3 hours trying to find some mug who will take you and you turn them down! I don't care if you want to rot here David but do not start badmouthing this club to the other players or you'll be training with the Under 18s.'

'Course I wont gaffer.'

'They all say that, i cant believe you. David Hunt, you are a c***!'

December

St Albans away

Jolley and Wilson act like a right pair of David Hunts and we give away 2 penalties. Ladapo equalised after the 1st after good play from the right back Rodgers and if not for those 2 mistakes, I could see an easy win
2-1 DEFEAT

Bromley Home, FA Trophy 1st Round

This is going to be a test. Bromley currently lie in 17thin the Vanarama National League but we do have the home advantage.Things go to plan though as Bromley go a goal up against the run of play and then start to control the game. Then Ladapo scores a magical goal, turning 2 defenders before firing home from 25 yards.
View attachment 193917

Now it is our turn to be in control and shortly after Ladapo pokes in a poachers effort for his 2ndand then adds a 3rdin the second half. Margate are through to the second round and we will have to play either Wrexham (VNL) OR Stalybridge (VNN) away
3-1WIN

Gosport at Home

Big clash against second in the table. Things start badly as Gosport take the lead but Christian Jolley pegs them back. Then we win a penalty and Jolley looks over to the dugout. He knows this is his last chance to impress me after already missing 3 penalties. He winks at me, puts his collar up and then smashes it straight at the goalkeeper.

Luckily Taiwo is at hand to score his 1st goal and win the game for us
2-1 WIN
View attachment 193916

Maidstone at home

If we are serious about winning the league, we need to win this boxing day clash against top of the league Maidstone. Maidstone get the lead and it looks like an uphill struggle from then on. Apart from a Ladapo wonder goal, its all Maidstone. We concede 2 more goals before Soloman Taiwo is sent off for a second yellow. I have a word in his shell like but to be honest it is my fault for asking them to get stuck in against one of our fiercest rivals. Tough one to swallow and playoffs are looking for likely than the title now
3-1 DEFEAT
View attachment 193914

Dartford away

This game is a worry, just 2 days after boxing day we can ill afford to lose again.
Kissock has to be rested, Taiwo is suspended and David Hunt gets a start. Brings to my attention how important Kissock is to this side as nothing happens until he comes off the bench and smashes a ball out wide to Green who hits it first time across goal where Kaine Felix is waiting to slot it home. Maidstone draw as well and have them again next at their place. Cant make the same mistakes in the New year, which is incidentally when ill probably be playing it next.So see you in 2016!
1-0 WIN

Wow wow wee wa. What a win, and not just a win, we've smashed them. Maybe I am too hard on myself and my team but it feels like one step forward and then 2 steps back. Should of beat these easily but dropped crucial points and finished 2-2. Jolley and Nath Green scored for us
2-2 DRAW

Basingstoke Home
My emotions are through the ringer. After players were nervous and nothing was happening I made a double substitution and Kammy and Jolley found the way through we needed. Weston Super Mare have gone top but if we can keep rocking and rolling like we are we should be top soon. Fingers crossed.

Things have taken a turn for the worst and we have had to stop paying out bonuses to non contract players due to our financial situation. Good grief
View attachment 193886

Now Soloman Taiwo has come to me worried about the finances and is not happy with how I've handled it. I said leave it to the board because what can we do? The whole squad is now unhappy

Chelmsford Away

I am heartbroken. Taiwo and the financial situation have ripped us apart. We go 4 down in the first 25 minutes. I do not know what to do. If we dont get promoted then we will definitely go into administration. Why god why!? Lapado is also out for 5 weeks. Lewis Wilson gets a consolation
4-1 DEFEAT

Eastbourne Boro Home
I simplified the tactics for this one and demanded a better performance. That man Taiwo got the opener trying to make amends for his 30 minutes substitution in the last game and Jolley got us a 2nd after the break. Eastbourne got one back only for Kaine Felix to kill the game towards the end. Need to keep some consistency now
3-1 WIN
View attachment 193885

In other news David Hunt has asked to come off the transfer list. This FM is definitely better r.e: saving relationships

Sutton Utd Away

A trip to Gander Green Lane starts quickly with a goal a piece in thefirst 7 minutes. Luke Moore back from injury grabs the opener and Margate 1st. Christian Jolley scores what turns out to be the winner on the stroke of half time. In other new Soloman Taiwo gets his 15th yellow card of the season and must now sit out 3 matches, but Margate are top of the league
3-1 WIN
View attachment 193882

And that is the end of February. I am very very worried about the finances but looking at my remaining fixtures and the fact we are top I think it is reasonable to expect an automatic promotion. Very good if I can do it but there is still the question of finances as nearly all the players contracts end in 2016 so what will I have to work with? Hartsdown Park is 2100 capacity. Even if we fill it will it solve the crisis? I don't think so. Which begs the question of how does it operate in real life? Because yeah I've spent 50k but I've always stuck to the wage budget and I'm 300k in the red with a projection of minus 950k at end of the season

Revenge was on the cards here but a very unlucky first half and a ridiculously lucky goal for the opposition puts them in front. I tellthe players the truth, they have been unlucky and Moore equalises before Kaine Felix puts us ahead. Unfortunately Maidenhead score a good equaliser and we cant find the breakthrough
2-2DRAW

Again we throw a lead away. Ladapo marks his return from a 5 week lay off with a goal only for Wassmer to make a huge mistake at centreback for their equaliser. Wassmer is supposed to be the best we have got. I cleared Brett Johnson out on loan to cover his 750 pounds a week wages. I also signed Taylor Parmenter on a non-contract. Every game just builds more pressure because we need to win this league.Thank God we are still 3 points clear. Could do with Taiwo back as well

I don't know if I've ever drawn this many games in a row before on any game ever. A team meeting is needed and the boys do react well. I just explain we aren't doing badly but we can and must do better. The undercurrent at the club about the finances is really annoying me and there is nothing I can do about it. Such a horrible, horrible game. A cagey affair with chances for both sides. In the second half Taiwo is put through on goal and fires one in low to the keepers left, he parrys it but only as far as Nathan Green who slots it home from a tight angle. Then, unbelievably, a Weston player breaks through on 92 minutes only for Kammy to bring him down.

MARGATE WIN LEAGUE, WELLER SLAMS PLAYERS

The 27 year old Margate Manager shocked fans and media alike when at a press conference to celebrate the sides promotion, he laid into his players. Interrupting the press officer, Weller looked like a volcano that had been holding in weeks of pressure and finally erupted.
“I actually cant believe this side has got promoted. We didn't lose 8 nil so we've managed to get promoted on 69 points. This has been an absolutely awful side and I'm letting most contracts wind down and getting new players in. Some of these boys are pathetic and the way they have limped across the line has been an utter embarrassment to me and this club. The boys who have been offered contracts know they have done well and I'm still considering offering contracts to Jolley and Green,' Weller vented, visibly angry.
Margate had started the day needing to make sure they didn't lose and a ten goal swing didn't go against them, and ended up losing 4-1 after Kissock, who most pundits have said was their best player this season, was sent off in the 38th minute for a vicious two footed challenge.
“What about Solomon Taiwo?” came a meek voice from someone from the Thanet Gazette. Rumours have circulated that Taiwo was at the centre of a revolt back in March and has refused to sign a new contract.
“Look, these boys can trust me and be successful. I have no problem with Solomon, and I hope he signs a new contract,”Weller softened as he spoke, “Whatever the rumours that have been going about, its time to forget it all and move forward.”
Weller then stormed out of the press conference when asked about the clubs finances, leaving Chairmen Bob Laslett speechless, and visibly perturbed. The press officer was left to wrap things up. Speculation is already flying as to whether Weller will even be Margate Manager next season, with his contract running out in the summer.

So we are having to expand our standing area to stay in the league. Last time this disastrously happened was back in the naughties. We moved a 20 minute drive away to Dover's ground. Players Wanted

Chiori Johnson – Signed on season long loan from Arsenal. Not as good as I hoped he would be but got my eye on some other players for right back. Problem is I have to wait a month for a full report so going to have to take some punts

View attachment 193720

Dean Rance – Wanted this guy last season but wages were a problem.Good cover for Taiwo (is a ball winning midfielder) and is perfect because he's signed on a non-contract

View attachment 193719

Michael Richens – Took a punt on this guy because of his 7.15 averate rating last season in the Vanarama South. It impressed me because Hemel Hempstead got relegated. He'll have to play more defensive but that's the right back position sorted. Will have to take a chance

View attachment 193717
View attachment 193715

Harry Girling – Signed on season long loan from our parent club,Millwall. Comes rated by scouts but first touch (any attribute that's 1) is a worry and his age. Will be signing another keeper and got a few to choose from hopefully

View attachment 193713

Henry Randall – Signed on a non-contract. Cheap and ticks all the boxes if you ask me. No risk here, hopefully wont need to a chance to prove himself if everyone stays fit

View attachment 193712

Elliot Romain – I play a defensive forward in my tactic and I feel like Romains mental attributes could really come in handy for the battle ahead. I also ran across him in Vanarama South where he scored 21 goals last season

View attachment 193711

Brandon Hall – The former Ebbsfleet goalkeeper played 41 games last season in the Van South and conceded 51 goals but has signed on anon-contract. Mitch Walker, my 1st choice, chose Braintree over me so i think Girling will start

Joe Anderson – Need a left back desperately and have signed him on a non-contract. Will be my back-up, hope I can get my first choice

View attachment 193710

Tom Bonner – I've got high hopes for this centre-back. Its as if I'm trying to put together a Vanarama South Dream Team but this guy played well for Ebbsfleet last season. The scouts aren't as keen as i am but his stats add up if you ask me

View attachment 193709

Conor Calcutt – I really am putting together a VNS Dream team. Calcutt scored 14 from 29 appearances last season for Wealdstone. I've taken a risk by adjusting the budget and I've payed 20.5k. Survival is a must

View attachment 193708

Good news. The board have injected another 120k into the club. No wonder Keith Piper (former chairmen and owner of Piper windows) had enough if this is the only way to run a club down here! Ill pay you back in trophies though Mr Laslett, don't you worry!

Tom Field – An Irish left back, signed on a non-contract. Cheap as chips and a 3 star scout rating

TOM BONNER SELECTED AS CAPTAIN, KAMMY TAKES VICE

View attachment 193707

The assistant suggests two 21 year olds as captain and vice but i think new signing Bonner is a much better option, Kammy does get the vice captaincy though

Tom Newey – Another panic signing I must admit. 33 yr old had a great season for Ebbsfleet last year in the (you guessed it) Vanarama South. Fingers crossed all of this isn't a disaster. Have got one ace left up my sleeve just before the start of the season, hopefully

Hemati – CB. I regret this one already but at least its only non-contract. Jumping reach lol.

In fact I've just released him straight away

Tiko Musonda – YES! This one cant be bad. The Chelsea youngster was available on a free. Best position is DM but I signed him for the centre back role, injecting some much needed pace into that backline.I think we are done but ill no doubt have to consider another left winger at some point soon

Eastleigh away
Very lucky not to concede but players are new to each other and new captain Bonner had a good game. Man of the Match was new right back Richens
0-0 DRAW

FC Halifax at home
2 from Calcutt, 2 from Romain and 1 from Felix and I have to wonder. Okay, so Halifax finished just outside the relegation zone last season but a man can dream cant he?
5-0 WIN

Cheltenham away
2 goals from Romain and 1 from Calcutt. This is turning into a good start. Feels so weird having so many decent strikers and one of Romains goals was ridiculous. Running away from the 18 yard box, he beats a player, swivels and hits it on the turn from 27 yards out.
3-1 WIN

Low turnouts for home games are becoming a reoccurring theme. Probably because we are over an hour up the road in Sittingbourne for our home games. We'll be back at Hartsdown Park in January thank god

Macclefield at Home
Even game and we have better of the chances but concede in the latter stages of the match
1-0DEFEAT

Welling Away
Romain,Goodman and Calcutt score in the 1st half and we are sitting pretty. Romain has to come off injured with a bruised head and Jolley comes on. We then concede 2 goals and are lucky not to concede the 3rd.I think Jolleys time could be up, shouldn't of even bothered giving him a new contract but was worried about making quality signings
3-2 WIN

Braintree at home
Lapado (who had a 2 year contract so has stayed on) and Randall put us 2 up then after half time the opposition gets one back. Lapado then gets his second before we concede again. Could be tighter at the back but that man Lapado gets his hattrick
4-2 WIN

Absolutely unbelievable start to the season. I get the feeling a few injuries could soon start a slippery slope and the defence could be better but positive signs in terms of not being relegated.

Please let me know if the way I am writing this is terrible. I've never done it before

Torquay Away
Absolute robbery in my opinion. We looked in control until the 73rd minute when we were picked apart. We hit straight back after Felix linked up with Lapado to grab the equaliser. Then a blatant foul on Taiwo with no whistle leads to a goal. The 3rd, the same thing again except on Goodman and it causes an 8 week injury
3-1 DEFEAT

Gateshead at home
Misonda, the former Chelsea academy player, has a shocker at he back and we concede very early on. Throughout the rest of the match we keep knocking on the door and we get the breakthrough just after half time with Romain scoring a beautiful goal. We have more chances but cant seem to get the winner.
1-1 DRAW

Bristol Rovers at Home
A bumper crowd of 500 make the trip up the Thanet Way to see Margate take on newly relegated Bristol Rovers. A few half chances in the first half and Rovers looked the more likely to make something happen. I told the boys I was delighted at half time but it didn't pay off as we conceded shortly after the break. I brought Kissock and Colcutt on and it paid dividends. First, right near the end of the game Felix laid it off to Kissock who struck it from 25 yards into the bottom right corner clipping the post. Then a few minutes later Felix cut open the defence with an early cross with the precision of a surgeon. Colcutt putting pressure on the defender forced the own goal
2-1 WIN

Stockport Away
After a poor 1st half performance I toy with taking Colcutt off and am rewarded. He scores a brilliant goal and his rating jumps from 6.3 to 8.3. We need Goodman back badly, Misonda will come good I am sure, but just keeps making mistakes. I'm not expecting to get promoted though so its all good but judging by the performances so far it may be a realistic target. Top of the league Wrexham away next, lets see what we are made of
1-1 DRAW

Wrexham Away
We hold our own in the first half but it all falls apart after the interval. We concede from a big ball over the top that's slotted home before Dean Rance is sent off for a second yellow. Taiwo was serving another suspension for 5 yellow cards. Unbelievably, and completely undeserved, Christian Jolley comes off the bench and scores a carbon copy of their goal
1-1 DRAW

Morecambe Home

Randall, Calcutt and Misonda get the goals in this great win but they come at a price. Bonner and Calcutt go off injured, the former out for 2 weeks and the latter for 4
3-0 WIN

Very decent September considering I have been expecting a relegation battle and have changed most the starting 11 from last year
