Not really just the contract.

They could choose to retire if they are having a hard time breaking into the first team from my experience.

They retire at any time in the game, i hat a 27 year old retire, while he was on contract and first team player

I'm pretty sure some players also retire if they're chronically injured or have long term injuries. I've seen it happen to some really young players.

You see some 19-22 year old's retire from the game.

Usually from small, Asian countries but you see some British ones.

i had Patrick Vierra and he was injured for couple of months so he decided to go into management:) After his Injury
Also a Young 17 year old Regen Called Tom Birkshop he was a goalkeeper and he decided he would retire from playing the game because he was phycily Unfitt :p

Some players that you dont want to sell or release wait FOR AGES.
I had Terry and Essien wait until they were 39 and 37 respectively before retiring even though they were like 15th choice by then.

Players sometimes retire if they have a bad injury or are injury ridden.
