I have taken a small Serie D club in Brazil to Serie A. Five years into the game playing in Copa Libertadores already. My original stadium was 5,000 and expanded to 20,000 once I got promoted to Serie A.

(On a side note: My old stadium had 4 small main stands and was open in the corners. The expansion from 5,000 to 20,000 left the 4 main stands unchanged and now I have huge Maracana-like stands in the 4 corners. It looks crazy! (H))

I sell out about half of my games, especially against local rivals and big clubs. When I select building a new stadium, I'm immediately told the board will build a new stadium because my current one (20,000) hasn't got much room for expansion (21,500). That said, in the very first message I get about new stadium planning, the board plans to build a new stadium with just 17,000 seats. This would be smaller than my current one! The new one has probably better expansion potential, but there isn't any information on expansion possibilities...

So my question is: Should I wait for better success in the future, like winning Serie A or Copa Libertadores, and just wait a few years with expansion to possibly get a bigger stadium? Or should I just go ahead with the board's 17,000 planning suggestion, hoping that the board will eventually build a bigger stadium when construction finally starts, or that it can be expanded from 17,000 to at least double size?

Since building a new stadium will disable me to build another new one for about 20 years, this is an important decision. Anybody has experience on how to handle this issue?

Update: One season later, when I ask the board for a new stadium again, the planned capacity has increased from 17,000 a year ago to 26,000.

I've won Serie A and Copa Libertadores, and hopefully many more titles to come in the future. My current 20,000 seats aren't always sold out but very close to it. I'm gonna wait another couple seasons or so to build a 40k or 50k stadium, since club reputation and fan base are most likely to grow a lot over that period.

The city of Belém has 2,500,000 inhabitants, and club reputation has risen from 2 to 3.5 stars. What's the absolute maximum stadium capacity I can reckon with, if I can become the leading club in South America in the next few years?

Yeah. I'm kind of frustrated about my board forcing a new stadium on me. I've been storming up the leagues with Hereford FC and just as I get to the Championship my board insists on building a new stadium. I would much prefer for them to wait a year or two for me to get into the Premier League. They are now planning a 12,700 seat stadium. No way will that be enough in a couple of years. Our current one is almost 8000. Seems insane to me.

I found this thread by furiously googling tips on how to delay them. Or finding out if they can change their mind on the planned seating. Like if I manage to qualify for the PL while they are still in the planning stages, if they might re-plan the capacity number.

But good on you for waiting. Wish you were my chairman.

I'm having stadium problems too. Managing Bolton, so we got a 28k seater. Future stadium plans however are to build a 22k stadium.

Update 2.0: Another year over and I'm already among the biggest clubs in South America. This time I couldn't stop my board from initiating the planning process for a new stadium. At least the planned capacity is 31,000. Not great, but much better than previously. With some expansions down the road I hope to get even higher capacity. I guess the 31,000 capacity can't be doubled, but is 45-50k possible at maximum expansion?

Only thing that worries me is that it says my stadium will be finished on 117th (!) December 2025. I think that I read some time ago about this bug in an older FM version, with the stadium never being actually built or, even worse, the file corrupting on the estimated stadium finish date. Can somebody confirm, deny or provide a link?
