patch update problem

hello, I'm new to the whole football manager and what i've found is when i downloaded the 10.3 patch update and applied it, it would not let me play saying something like "disc not found" and when i googled, i found out that i shouldnt have done that. well now i want to know how to update from the 10.0...813.. version so it works. I hope you guys understand what I just wrote.

How did install football manager was it Via stream or Disc?
