BORO will sign Stephen McManus in time to take him on their mid-July mini tour to Ireland, according to Scottish sources.
There are reports from North of the Border that Boro are very close to agreeing a £1.8m deal for the Scottish international defender.
Boro head off to Ireland on Sunday week and Strachan will be delighted to have McManus back on board for the trip.
The 27-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Boro and has expressed a wish to complete a permanent move here.

Meanwhile Rangers boss Walter Smith has confirmed that Boro have inquired about Kevin Thomson. But Smith stressed that the two clubs had not found any common ground in discussions over the 25-year-old midfielder.
Smith said: “There has been an interest from Middlesbrough. So far we haven't reached any agreement.”
Thomson has a year left on his Ibrox contract and Rangers are said to be looking for a fee of around £3m if they are to be tempted to sell at this stage.
This is likely to be considerably higher than Boro’s valuation, though there have been reports in the Scottish media that Rangers might be interested in taking Boro striker Lee Miller in part exchange.
Smith is keen for Thomson to stay and has offered a contract extension. But so far this remains unsigned.
Thomson, capped twice for Scotland, joined Rangers for £2m from Hibs in January, 2007, and signed a four and half years deal.
He has suffered two serious knee injuries in his career, the most recent being in November 2008, but on each occasion Thomson has fought his way back to full fitness and was a near ever-present last season.

Heard McManus was pretty decent last year, so good. £1.8m is more than I thought it would be.

Thomson for Miller + Cash = huge win for Boro.

Steven McManus is no big loss for Celtic, I have always thought him as overrated.

Kevin Thomson however was a bit of a shocker, he is one of the only former Hibs players I will openly admit to liking. A great player who has been shot down with serious injuries everytime he has peaked. He would be a great buy for Middlesbrough.

Amazing signings for Boro, they are really going places.

Is Strachan building a Scottish Premier League Select?

not a chance he`l get thomson not even walter smith is stupid enough to take lee frikin miller!

WALTER !! WHAT THE **** ARE YOU DOING !

If this is true, which i pray to god it isnt, then essentially he is selling someone who is arguably our best midfielder behind Steve Davis. If he goes for £3m, I dont really care, he is worth more, but he's out of contract, so I can accept that. But no, instead he negotiates to sign the aimless Lee Miller !!

No deal .

i love walter, he's a legend...but mendes is gone, fergusons gone, who's gonna parter steven davis?

Allegedly he's got £5m to spend, but the legend that is Nacho Novo is gone, Boyds gone, Wilson looks to be on his way out, Thomson is allegedly out, and I heard Everton were sniffing around Mo Edu. It's all very well selling, as long as the money is re-invested in the team which I doubt it would be.

Well Rangers are not a rich club so they will have to make do with what they have and get by as best they can, long gone are the days when they could challenge with the big European teams.

big ally was at the world cup scouting players, and i have full confidence in him so we'll see. can't believe novo is gone, such a legend, boyd well, nuff said, wilson is going to be world class someday so it was only a matter of time before he was snapped up, at least he'll be playing for scotland, and edu isn't amasin so i dont see why everton would want him, but he could potentially be good with davis as he's more defensive. theres still a decent amount of loan, and andrew ellis isn't too incredibly rich.

I'm actually a big fan of Edu, he does what he does well, and seems to have a knack of scoring important goals. Next year, all jokes aside, I think Lafferty can replace Boyd. He had a promising end to the season, and if he can carry that form over into next season we'll be in a good position to retain the title.

nice buys if it goes through for 'Boro, slight weird soft spot for them for some reason, so I hope they get back into the prem quickly and re-establish themselves.

i am actually hoping that ranger find an investor (not to rich though) as the rivalry will not be the same, celtic are linked with keane, bullard etc whilst rangers are selling everyone, i dont think rangers can remain competitive much longer without an investor

Tbf the players we're selling are out of contract this summer, meaning we'd listen to offers for them regardless of our financial position. Something like 9 of our players are out of contract this year so :S

And I forgot to say, great signings for Middlesbrough.

We also bought Andy Halliday from Livingston. An 18 year old Scot who apparently scored 23 goals last season from the left wing.
