i'm suprised there hasnt been a thread on this so i thought i would start one

yesterday fifa announced that uefa competitions such as the champions league will have 5 officials in the 2010/2011 competition. there will be 1 referee, 2 linesmen and 2 goal line referees, the news came fro sky sports news and bbc after a FIFA meeting in cardiff at around 3pm. sepp blatter, the fifa president always argued that goal line technology coulnt be introduced at lower levels and extra officials could despite other sports such as cricket, tennis and rugby all introducing technology only at the very top level with no problems

do you think this is blatter's comprimise or do you think this will have more benfits such as more accurate penalty decisions and therefore better than goal line technology

Didn't the Champions League already have refs behind the goals? And actually its 6 refs then no? 2 goalrefs, 2 linesmen, 1 head referee and the "4th" official at the sideline

I am going to be awkward, and say goal line officials. Basically, they are just the same as linesmen but better when it comes to crossing the line. They hardly get in the way of play, and when the ball is far away from them they wander into the box, and when a ball is hoofed up field towards them they run back off the pitch. If we have goal line technology, its ruining good old football. I mean its bad enough having, what, over 60% of the players foreign in an ENGLISH league, but if we have goal line technology football will be no longer 'good football', as there will be intervals every time the ball deflects off the bar, and if it doesn't go over the line, how do you restart?

It was the UEFA Europa League

no, that was the europa league and the 4th official is irrelevent

Oh, and a point on linesman on the goal... again. Last season in the Europa League Everton were playing AEK Athens when the ball went out of play. The referee or linesman couldn't see who touched it last, and all players were claiming it hit the opposition. The goal line referee made the choice that it came off an AEK player, the corner was taken and Everton scored it. On the replays on tv it shown that it did infact hit an AEK player, and goal line technology wouldn't have seen it due to the angle that players were at

if were going to proceed with technology i would like all human aspects to be removed. Going to a video would be just as quick as all the arguing that goes on when players think the ball has crossed the line anyway. So, imo, if its going to happen, all human error may as well be removed

tbh though with a referee a few yards away he should be able to make a good decision and what would happen if the ball didnt cross the line? would the players carry on playing until the referee gets confirmation that it crossed the line and then he would stop the game

There bound to miss at least 1. Which will then be criticised in the media. Human error will always happen. There's a chance that, on at least one incident, the box is packed, and both ref's visions are limited. They will miss a call. This wont happen with human error. It takes like 10 seconds to go to video. Also, if put up on a big screen, it could become a feature similar to hawk eye in tennis, where the crowd get involved.I dont see the problem about stopping the game. Its only 10 seconds.
No, i believe the ref should stop the game the moment the ball is cleared after a potential video decision. Therefore this still allows players to score proper from rebounds and the like. But the video comes in when the excitement has died down (the ball is clear). This would extend the excitement of the game imo.
