Mike Ashley sacks Hughton - he appoints Hughton's youth coach as the replacement!

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has been nothing short of being involved in a few upsets during his tenure as owner of the club. But on the 7th of July 2009, he caused yet another, by SACKING Chris Hughton.

The Irishman had guided the Magpies back to the promised land via winning the Championship. He had spoke in the press recently about how delighted he was to be guiding Newcastle in their return to the F.A Premier League. But today he finds himself taking a lonely walk OUT of St.James' Park.

He had already began to strengthen his side. He had completed the signing of French winger Hatem Ben Arfa on loan from Marseille. With numerous other clubs tracking his movements a move to The 'Toon' didn't seem on the cards. Nevertheless, he arrived on loan for a year, with the option to buy for £5million at any point. Hughton had also signed Ivorian defensive midfielder Cheik Tiote for £3.5million. The 23 year old signed from Dutch champions FC Twente and Hughton heaped praise on his new signing claiming he had VERY high hopes for him.

But Ashley's appointment again left fans scratching their heads. Craig Todd, 30, was their youth coach and had been since the age of 21. He had worked with the likes of Andy Carrol coming through. Ashley stated that because Todd was so young, he understood the players better. Believe what you want, but I think Ashley was looking for a viable reason for Chris' departure.

Todd was involved in a serious car crash at the age of 19 with his father. Todd broke both his legs whilst damaing several tendons and the ligaments in his knees. Quickly told he wouldn't play again, the Scotsman turned to coaching and earned his badges. With that achieved he looked around for a job and noticed in 2001 that Newcastle where looking for a Youth Coach. The rest the say is history.

With around £6.5million to spend and a spare £75K on wages, Todd has stated that he will look to bring in a LB, CM and a ST. He has identified a few of his targets and stated that unhappy Brazilian twin Fabio of Manchester United was a possible transfer target. With his recent transfer request, United are said to be looking for around £3.9million for their LB. The transfer request came after Fabio stated he wished to be paid the same as his brother, Rafael, who earns £12,000, whilst Fabio only makes £450.

Interest is also high in Argentine winger Jonas. Inter Milan and Manchester City have already approuched Newcastle with enquirys and bids, but they have all been rejected and informed that 'Spiderman' is not for sale.

From left to right; Fabio, Artem Milevskyi, Helder Postiga

BBCsport.com has exclusive content as we reveal Newcastle United's new signings for the July-August transfer period. Todd has brought in 6 players, 3 on loan and 3 on a permanent deal. He has also sold 4 players.

As he mentioned during his first press conferance, Todd has went for Brazilian LB Fabio from Manchester United. The youngster has stated he doesn't mind playing understudy to Jose Enrique at the moment, but went on to say that he hopes his move to Newcastle can help him develop into an even better player. He signed a 4 year deal worth £15,000 a week. He now earns more than his brother, Rafael, who still plays for Manchester United. This will be the 1st time the twins have been apart as they have shared rooms for most of their lives and a flat during their time in Manchester. But Fabio has said he and his brother have a very strong bond and they can survive without seeing one another.

Jermaine Jenas was the 2nd announcement. The Tottenham midfielder has joined the Magpies on a year long loan deal. Todd said that Jenas adds something to his central midfield area, an area in which he felt needed a bit extra in it. There is no agreement to sign the player on a permanent basis, though this may be aranged depending on his performances.

The next were 2 strikers, Helder Postiga and Artem Milevskyi. Postiga signs on a permanent deal, 3 years to be exact for a fee of around £1.9million from Sporting CP. The Portugese forward has some experiance of the Premier League after a spell with London side Tottenham, but he admittied these were the worst of his career. He found himself transfer listed at Sporting, and quickly grabbed the chance to try and prove himself in England again. The other forward, Artem Milevskyi has signed on a loan deal. Again, like Jenas, there is no permament arangement fee in place but could be agreed depending on the Ukrainian's performances. Milevskyi told the press he was relishing the chance to play at St.James' Park and hear the passion of the home support. But can these forwards jump in-front of a favoured Andy Carrol?

Todd's final 2 players were the loan signing of Darren Gibson and the permanent signing of Artem Ben Arfa. Gibson was on th loan list at United and Newcastle seen this as an ideal cover and back-up player. The Irishman is known for his stunning long rang efforts, like Paul Scholes. He'll want to show SAF what he is capable of when playing reguarly. Ben Arfa had signed on loan after former manager Chris Hughton had managed to secure his signature. But Todd has taken it one stage further and shelled out the £5million needed to agree the permanent deal. The Frenchman joined Marseille for over £10million from Lyon only a year ago. But several rows with coach Didier Deschmps forced him to look for football elsewhere. He hit out at the Deschamps, stating he ruined his time at Marseille. Deschamps refused to comment, only stating that Ben Arfa was being 'childish'.

As for the players who have left, Todd mentioned 4. Spainish forward Xisco has left the club. He joined Sevilla for £4.8million. Newcastle have made a significant loss on the big forward after payin £8million for him. But he was deemed surplus to requiremtns at St.James', and took his oppourtunity to return to Spain where he spent last season on loan with Racing Santander. Nile Ranger has joined Watford on loan for 6 months. The young Engishman is highly rated by many in the game. He said he was excitied to wear the Yellow and Red of Watford and play for an up and coming Malky Mackay side. Aaron Spear joined Chelsea for a fee of £1million which could rise to £2.8million. Todd commented that he had wanted Spear to stay, but the lure of the bright lights at Stamford Bridge were just too much for the youngster. Samuel Adjei was the last player to leave. He joined Manchester United for a fee of around £2.3million, but the deal can rise to £6.25million. Adjei said on his move that it was a 'dream come true' and 'too good to refuse'.

And with that. we conclude Newcastle's summer activities.

30th June 2009

I have been forgotten in football, after my retirement 10 years ago I have done barely anything involved with football, but I currently work for ESPN and ITV Tyne Tees as a football pundit. I am a Newcastle icon (I hope so), and I made 179 appearances for them from 1992-1998. I was a left back, and I hoped to get into coaching, but never got the opportunity. Now I see another opportunity arising, the job of Newcastle United manager. Chris Hughton walked out of St. James' Park after, "supposedly", getting a low transfer budget. What a cry baby, Newcastle are only just back in the Premier League, what does he expect, £50,000,000 to splash around. Of course I applied for the job, I really want to get involved with football again. I rung my agent, and he faxed me the forms for applying, I filled them out, not wasting any time. Jeez I hope I get it, I would die for the chance to be Manager of Newcastle United. I'm currently 44, and I don't have many chances left to get back into football. I've taken my coaching courses, I'm fully qualified, but I just never get opportunities. I've been looking round, only Premier League and Championship sides, I'm way too good for lower leagues, but nothing has presented itself. Now it feels like fate, my beloved Newcastle United, just applying made me giddy.

Newcastle Appoint Icon John Beresford as Manager

Newcastle old boy John Beresford has been surprisingly been appointed as the new Newcastle manager, after 10 years of almost nothing with football he is back in the game. Is his football knowledge of old going to keep Newcastle up, or will his old style be smashed by the new game, we will just have to wait and see. Chris Hughton walked out of St.James Park only yesterday, and with Newcastle swift in appointing Beresford, it seems they have confidence in the 44 yr old. Beresford has been given an apparent £10,000,000 to spend on new players in the coming two months.

2nd July 2009

I can't believe I got the job, I am Newcastle manager, that's just... amazing, I'm still in shock. I spent all of yesterday with the press or my team, with no time to get settled, so today I'm going to look at new transfer targets. One young man that has caught my eye is Mexican Guillermo Ochoa, he currently plays for Club America, and is only valued at £1,000,000, but I know he is worth so much more than that. I'm also looking to Ruben De La Red, he has been transfer listed at Real Madrid, so that could be a big coup for the club. At the moment we have a few injuries, so I am looking for a right midfielder, jeez some suggestions would help (;)), if only my assistant manager would give me the time of day, inconsiderate *****. Anyways I should be off to get some work done.

Two new signings at St.James' Park

With £10,000,00 to spend, Mr. John Beresford has made two new signings to play in a Newcastle shirt this season. The fee for both transfers was £4,800,000, a slightly funny coincident. Main transfer target Guillermo Ochoa is on his way to Newcastle, straight away a bid by Beresford was made, and it was negotiated up to £4,800,000, a fee both teams agree on for the highly rated goalkeeper. The other player on his way to Newcastle is Real Madrid reject, Fernando Gago. After looking at De La Red, the scouts noticed Gago at the same time. Beresford was given a glowing report, and he flew to Madrid to discuss. Real Madrid management would not let him go for a fee less than £4,800,000, but Beresford seemed to be happy with that. The superstar has a contract worth over £80,000 a week, whereas Ochoa only earns roughly £15,000 a week.

The New Boys' Kits

Beresford has also let Xisco and Shola Ameobi leave on loan. Alan Smith is also on his way out, and Sol Campbell is tipped to be the new manager. Ole Soderberg has also left for £250,000
