Former Premier League official Alan Wiley backs under-fire referee Mark Clattenburg following Nani's disputed goal for Manchester United against Tottenham on Saturday.

I think he played the advantage when Nani handled it. Just my opinion though.

A delibirate handball is a booking though, so Nani should have been booked, he wasn't. Before that Nani should have either had a penalty or been booked for diving, Clattenburg did neither. Was a cruel one for Tottenham, Clattenburg got it wrong for me. Wouldn't have made much of a difference for me.

Hmm, good point well put. You've changed my opinion.

He's not the greatest referee in the world. He is well known to Everton fans for a few decisions which swayed our way in a derby a couple of seasons ago :)

Well known to Spurs fans on two occasions now. The first being the Pedro Mendes goal that should have been given a few years back.

Aye, I seen that after the game, don't really concentrate on referees although he seems to favour the big teams.

bit harsh to say he meant to hand ball it he was fouled in the box and rolled on the ball and his left hand touch it

He pulled the ball back with his hand, it was rolling out of play.

to say he dived is outrageous as the catching of legs and multiple grabs of the shirt were easy to spot, he may go down theatrically but that's football nowadays sadly.

Never said he dived, I said if Clattenburg never gave it as a penalty he clearly saw it as a dive so Nani should have been booked..

It was the referees fault, he should have made his decision more clear. Gomes was unfortunate and I would feel hard done by if I was a Spurs fan. Haven't seen any sour grapes from and Spurs fans myself though :S

so if any is is at fault is the ref not nani

Not being a ****, but I cannot understand that. I have said it was the referees fault, I haven't once blamed Nani.

agree on that i was wrong to say sour grapes and yes it was unfortunate to spurs but the ref ignored the lines men advice so we cant blame nani i tihnk any footballer would have done what nani did.

Oh, I don't blame Nani, it was a poor refereeing decision.

There is such a thing as incidental contact. Just because a guy goes down doesn't mean it's automatically either a penalty or a dive. He doesn't have to award one or the other by default. (Although IMO it was a penalty the defender had 2 hands around Nani so that was a complete **** up IMO)

Play to whistle, I blame the keeper for this. Don't stand there expecting a freekick to be given. If you don't hear a whistle and the ref clearly didn't blow his whistle, why stop playing? From the replays I've seen he stands there looking at the ref for 4-5 seconds waiting for a whistle.

He went down and screamed for a penalty though. Even if it is incidental contact it is a penalty. Most fouls are incidental...

Play to the whistle is right, but as a goalkeeper playing at the very highest level of football, you expect the referee to get such a simple decision right. I cannot defend Gomes though, it was a lack of concentration.

Think most level-headed Spurs fans are over this now. Sure, it's possible we may have equalised if the goal was disallowed, but I can't see it personally.

Just seems like the media have decided to focus this as their talking point for the next week or so.
