Football tactics is all about identifying and exploiting an opponents weakness.

Just wanted to ask does anyone have any list of all tactical formations and in which situation you should use them in. For example a 4-5-1 can be used to counter a 4-4-2 with the purpose of outnumbering them in midfield.

Can anyone list the pros and cons and which formations you should use to counter others

4-5-1 by no means counters a 4-4-2, it is all to do with how they set up.

However, some formations seem to directly 'counter' others. A 3-4-1-2, for example, can beat a 4-3-1-2 simply by matching them in midfield, offering a spare man at the back and providing real width.

The old 'WM' formation was made to counter the then-new offside law during the 1920's. This is countering tactics, to some extent. And the 4-5-1 wasn't made solely to counter the 4-4-2 and outnumber the midfield. It has other purposes, including it transforming into a 4-2-3-1.

And plus, it's not that difficult to in all honesty. You learn as you go along.
