I'm playing as Manchester United and I'm in the Quarter Finals of the Champions League. I've tried once to play against them but I got butchered 6-4 on the first leg.I'm play a standard 4-4-2 formation.

These are my players:

Rooney, Berbatov, Fabio, Fletcher, Carrick, Valencia, Vidic, Ferdinand, O Shea, Evra, Van Der Saar.

Any suggestions?

You play fabio as your left mid ? What about nani ?

Try playing a 4-5-1 this time, but have a defensive midfielder man-mark either the striker or the advanced central midfielders. The other two central midfielders can then close down the rest of the Barcelona midfield whilst you sit deep and soak up the pressure. I do this for Atletico Madrid, and beaten both Madrid and Barcelona. One of the results was a 4-1 win, courtesy of a Diego Forlan hat-trick.

i recently completed my first season with malaga with a sugar daddy and finished 3rd in the league.. i beat real madrid both times i played them in the league and beat them in the copa del rey final.. also beat barca 4-0 in the last game of the season which they needed to win to win the league!! When i played these two teams i used a different formation. i usually used a high pressing shorter passing 4-2-3-1(2cm 1amc 2inside forwards) playing quick attacking football but when playing them i used a deep more direct 4-2-3-1(2dms 1cm 2inside forwards) playing quick countering football.

It seemed to work very well. The only timed i conceded against either of them was from corners or free kicks!! I think it worked because i sat very deep and hit them hard on the counter. Particulaly with barca in the last game of the season. as they started chasing them game i caught them out and punished them quite a few times.

My team for the last game looked like this: (i had my 3rd choice RB in and 3rd choice CB in and 2nd choice st)
GK: Ochoa (GK - defend)
RB: Manolo Gaspar (fullback - auto)
CB: Rami (centerback - stopper)
CB: Juanito (Centerback - cover)
LB: Jose Angel (fullback - auto)
DM: N'zonzi (Anchor man - defend)
DM: Annan (Defensive mid - defend)
CM: Paulo Henrique (advance playmaker - attack)
AMR: Hazard (inside forward - attack)
AML: Afellay (inside forward - attack)
ST: kadlec (poacher - attack)

seemed to work wonders for me! hope this helps. ask any questions if ya want.

Don't go too defensive. Settings like 'contain' and 'defensive' require perfection, and most of the time if you give Barca 90% possession, they'll eventually score. Since you're chasing the tie by 2 goals, but hopefully you scored 4 at the Nou Camp rather than them scoring 6 times at OT? So a 2 goal winning margin would be enough?

Try to use mobile CBs where possible. Vidic and Ferdinand are superb, but aren't that quick. I've had a lot of success with Djourou and Koscielny, personally but if you have more mobile CBs, use them.

Switch to 'counter' and go 4-3-3/4-2-3-1. Have a 'narrow' setting on your width slider (because they don't have anyone especially good in the air, so it forces them wide where they can't do anything) but have a neutral defensive line slider, maybe slightly deeper than 50% (so 35/40% ish) and use quick wide players yourself who are also good finishers (Walcott runs riot whenever I play them w Arsenal) so, Nani and Valencia? With Hernandez up top and then either play Rooney in the AMC slot (if going 4-2-3-1) or push him left and drop Nani if going 4-3-3. Have a ball-winner in midfield, who can also pass -- Carrick?

IF I were you, I'd try this:

VdS

Fabio/Rafael - MOBILE CB - MOBILE CB - Evra

Carrick - Anderson/Fletcher

Valencia - Rooney - Nani

Hernandez

With the instructions:

GK - Def.

FB - Auto.

CB - Def.

CB - Cover

FB - Auto

Ball-Winner - Def.

Box-to-box - Sup.

Defensive Winger - Attack/Winger - Sup.

Treq. - Attack / Adv. Playmaker - Sup.

Inside Fwd - Attack

Poacher - Attack.

---

Make sure in your Opposition Instructions, you close down Dani Alves and the LB and show them onto their weaker foot, and close down Busquets. I personally don't think it works man-marking Messi, but you can do if you go 4-3-3 and choose a DM like Fletcher to man-mark him.

Play 9 - 0 - 1 and just get all of your players to stand on the goal line.

Thanks a bunch mates :) I'll be trying these as soon as I get back from work.

Use Clever OI.

Tight Marking on Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets to try and kill off there creativity, Closing down and weaker foot on Messi, Villa and Pedro to reduce there attacking threat. Play a fairly high line, Pass Direct and Fast. You'll kill any team who play possession, just through shock tactics. Beat Porto with Leiria doing this, and Benfica. Managed a 2nd place finish and got into Europe. Got to the Semi's in the Champs league beating Barca, Inter and Chelsea on the way. All who use Possession Football. Now I'm at Porto ;)

Use their own medicine against them, play as they play :)

They are the best in the game at how they play. United aren't exactly on the same level as barcelona first touch and passing wise. You need to play on their weaknesses.

But they can still do it :)

like Joss said above, play 4-2-3-1 you overload their defence when they press on with attack

but i used this instead,

Weise

Sagna(FB-S)----Koscielny(CB-D)--- Hummels(CB-D)--- Clichy(FB-S)

Wilshere(DLP)---Song(BWM)

Walcott (IF-A)---Fabregas(AM-A) ---Nasri(IF-A)

Van Persie(P)

(balanced-control-short passing-press more) tactics, the rest default

touchline- retain possession, work ball into box, pass to space

i cba to put up screen shots but this tactic beat them away 2-0 (walcott- rvp) then 1-1 at home (walcott)

Barca's only real threat is Alves and Messi. Take them out of the game and the rest is easy.

ask your winger/inside forwards to man mark, tight mark, hard tackle and weaker foot on messi.. let your FB to do zonal marking.. this will stop messi in his track..

1st season with tottenham champions cup semi final, barça beat me 6-2 in camp nou. this defeat is the worst in my entire fm life(13years).i tried to use some diff tactics and my tactical gamble failed :)

in premier league i was in first place (+4 points above chelsea last 4 games and -> chelsea home, man city away, bolton home, aston villa away) and i made my decision, i rest all my first team players gameiro, defoe, vaart, bale, dawson, huddlestone.

i started game with 4 2 4 control strategy, i won the game 5-1 against barça, christian benitez scored 4 :)

i mean, if you have chance to control the ball(impossible in real life) you can beat them easily. esp beating barça is not epic in game.

i have used a 4-2-3-1 wingers formation, and i always ramp big teams, like barca at the camp nou.

i had on cm, who is a ball winner, and the other cm as box2box. by this way i was able to stop xavi from doing crazy passes, and take hold of the ball and gaina like 60% possesion at times. .
but, since i changed to a 4-2-4 (or like ur 4-4-2) formation, i still get the on top of them and win. the cm's role is the same as my former 4-2-3-1 wingers formation and while playing a deep defense line.

so what ever ur players are

i would always have a CM as a

1.'ball winner' in support role. must have an average tackling attribute, like at least 12+, and of couse the defualt sats for a passer
and
2. a box 2 box cm with support role. this is my playmaker that does the passes.

forwards are not a problem, since u still have ronney that will finish the job, and have fast wingers, nani to say the least .
