I thought it might be usefull to jot down my thoughts about tactics, if not for the sake of others, then for my own mental health. I've been thinking about tactics every year, when new fm is released, and been breaking my wits about them with each passing year. So I decided to write it down and read it when next fm is released. I'm not that good to start complicating things and tailor tactics, or recreate real life tactics, I just don't want to lose games with my club, and, if possible, win with plenty a goal difference. So let's get on with it.

Starting formation seems to be selected automatically by tactic creator, and seems to be different for each team. My Everton team was 4-4-1-1, my Malaga was 4-2-3-1, my Arsenal was 4-4-2 and my Barcelona was 4-3-3. Seems as if default formation is chosen for each team. So leave it as it is, as I assume it is the best for your club, although that may not be true.

Philosophy seems to be best set more rigid If you like to tell your players how to play. If you do a lot of tinkering and tweaking, moving sliders. On the other hand, if you don't want to limit or restrict your players, fluid is your choice.

Passing, creative freedom, tackling and everything else on 2nd screen seems to work best left at default. You can achieve better results by changing all this, but I leave this at default, because this way, tactic creator sets things depending on player roles and duties, which is best in general. I say best, because, for example, your defenders usually have weaker passing attributes then your midfielders, so they need to do short passing, while others need to do direct. Tactic creator sets this up nicely, and everything you change on this screen affects your whole team, which is not good. The good thing about changing this is it only moves the sliders for a small bit. If you really aren't satisfied with your results, I would recommend putting less pressure on your team here, meaning you put short passing, more disciplined, stand off more, more cautious, and stick to position.

Player roles and duties are set automatically depending on your previously chosen formation. If you are a rigid type of manager, tweak this according to your asisstants opinion of your available players and duties. Asisstant report can be found on tab at tactics screen. If you are a progressive, fluid type of player, like me, leave player roles and duties as they are.

Starting strategy doesn't depend on who you are up against, or anything else, it depends on your formation. If you are using wide players, go with attack strategy, and if not, go with counter strategy.

That's about it. You should be able to make an effective tactic by yourself if you follow these simple suggestions.
