Hello fellow FMers.

Firstly I'd like to say a great big thank you to
maxy67who inadvertantly helped me with this, I have always been a great lover of football history and when he posted his excellent thread on the History of tactics it got me intrigued. Especially his excellent Arrigo Saachi tactic.

I started a game as Southampton and imediatley started with maxy67's tactic, but I didn't like the two strikers so I altered it to have a flat 5 in midfeild. This, along with some good signings, allowed me to get promoted as champions breaking both Sunderlands record goals total & Reading's record points total as well as winning the League Cup.

When I got into the Prem I started to adapt the formation from a flat 5 to a midfeild dimond (as this is a great shape for attacking) and started playing two up front again... until I noticed that teams were exploiting either my lack of width in attack (with defensive FBs) or the space behind them (with attacking FBs creating width) so I pushed one striker out onto this wing and voila the tactic was created;

Now I don't know if I have just bought really good players or if this tactic is a gem, but by the new year I was top of the table and able to attract the transfer listed Rami (Valencia), Pandev (Inter) & Pedro (Barcelona). Still don't know how I got Pedro! :D Any way here are my results;

*nb Man Utd played a very weak team against me due to injurys, but the others have played full-strength. Also the loss you can't quite see if to Arsenal in the Carling-cup... I also lost to Aston Villa early on... also the tactic you see presented here has only really been used in its current form since the Blackburn game

Now this tactic should be seen as a work in progress and as I have not been able to test it with anyone other than my Southampton, I don't really know if its good, or just my players.

Player Roles;

GK: Sweeper keeper so Ideally should be a good shot-stopper with good acceleration etc...

DR: Defensive stats & Pace, if they can go forward this is ok, but defense is their first priority, eg I'm currently training a CB with ok passing to play here

DC: Pace, Pace & more Pace... also the usual Tackling, Marking, Anticipation etc...

DL: Think Garath Bale [if you have the money], Ashley Cole... lost of pace & stanima and good crossing or passing (set instructions accordingly)

DLP: Passing and Tackling are the most important, but general Deep Lying Playmaker stats are good to have

BBM: Stanima and Pace are needed and they should be good playing defence [Tackling Marking etc] and attack [Passing & Technique etc]

TQ: Just have a look at the Trequartista stats... pace is a real bonus

AMR: A typical pacey winger... my formation gets the winger to play more through-balls than crosses as I have quite a small Striker/team so passing & creativity are a must for me but if you have Andy Carroll/Drogba then a 'normal' winger with good crossing would be better

ST: Don't expect this guy to do anything but score you goals Carroll/Drogba types may be good in this role (especially if you have good crossers) but I use J-Rod (Burnley's Jay Rodriguez) how plays well here so a Defoe/Owen/Suarez would play well here

NOTES;

This tactic is built upon the ideas of Mr Sacchi, with lots of pressing and a very high defensive line so there are two things to note

1 - My squad has pace built in as this was my aim from the start, players generally have at least 14-15 pace, acceleration & positioning... as AVB has shown at Chealsea do not try to impliment this tactic with slower center-backs (Terry etc..) unless they have insane positioning skill

2 - I also always look for players with high determination, workrate & teamwork 14-15+ so this would undoubtely help my tactic, but may not be stricktley neccessary

Squad;

How it works;

So basically in defence the striker and winger man-mark the opposition full-backs, the AMC closes down the opposition centre-backs. The two box-to-box midfeilders and the play-maker markup the opposing midfeilders, while the defensive line pushes up to mark the opponents stiker(s) and wingers.

Summary;

So yeah I'm looking for advice (maybe even somebody to test) on how to make the tactic better, as I seem to be getting the results, but the games seem quite even against the bigger clubs.

Any feed-back would be most welcome and remember this is not a super-duper-wonder tactic, so if you as Barcelona get thrashed by The Nagg's Head pub team, please don't hate me :p

Any way here it a ling to the tactic; 2shared - download Saints-V4 (Southampton, Jan 2013).tac
