Background

For me the best part of FM is playing network games with your mates and editing the database. Dont get me wrong i love to take Carlisle United to the Champions league but you just dont get that same excitement and competitiveness you get with an edited network game. As a 6 player network game would take far too long to play properly, with so many attempted transfers and the game crawling along giving you news every 30 mins (game time), we always edit the database. To keep it interesting we are always thinking of different criteria to pick from. e.g. players with a certain amount of caps, players not currently in international teams, players of certain ages, players with no caps etc. One of the most exciting things we did was create a point scoring system for the season as we were always arguing who had done better, someone who has won the league or someone who had won the champions league and got to the league cup final etc. We assigned points for competition finishes, top goal scorers, assisters , player of the month etc. It added a whole new element to the game as every game and every performance counted. I will be adding that at some point but im going off on a tangent. Anyways, I was intrigued with the auction games people where playing, but as far as I understand it people would bid on players and build a team, but the actual game would just run its course on someone’s computer. So what I want to do is have the excitement of picking players through a bidding process but being able to actually play a network game with these players

Playable auction concept
I have already produced a simple version of what im trying to achieve using excel and played a network game with it. It works but not very well. So now I will give you a breakdown of what I have done and why. I created a database with all the best players in the world in each position (GK, DF, MF, ST) I then created an interface that would let you randomly select a player from the specified position. I made it so only one player would be selected at a time and it would display a maximum of 3 Goalkeepers, 6 Defenders, 6 Midfielders and 5 Strikers. I wanted to keep the bidding process pretty similar to the original but certain things have to be changed. For instance, I believe the aim is to get 20 people to create teams to fill a league but as I only play it with my mates there is only a maximum of 6 of us (that’s right, I only have 6 mates) This means originally there would be 16 rounds of bidding of roughly 20 players per round but that setup doesn’t necessarily work when there’s only 6 of us picking players. This is why I have designed the way I have, so its totally up to your discretion on how to pick. When we did it we kept to the original rules (16 rounds of 20ish player) as we thought it was more exciting have a wide range of players to pick from. Another thing is that the database is bigger than the amount of players that will be selected and up for auction which means some players will never be available. Again we liked it coz you’ll never know what team you’ll end up with.

Each player has a budget and there is a minimum bid to stop people buying players for next to nothing. The way we did it was £300 million budget with a minimum bid of £10 million for a player. Again this is totally customisable depending on what your situation is. I have created a few tables where you can add the players bought and it will work out remaining budgets. I am not going to explain all the rules and exactly how we did things as hopefully when I get some help of you lovely people I will upload the finished article and give a detailed explanation as to how it is played

The final section is a separate database of players that are good but not good enough that people would want to bid for them. For example your Steven Taylors, N’zogbia’s and Saha’s. The reason for this is to try and stick to the original auction game. We said you had to have a 22 man squad and that was made up from a minimum of 17 players from the bidding section, and a maximum of 5 players randomly selected free players from the 2nd database full off the lesser players, or as I hilarious called it, ‘the also rans’. The number of players you were randomly assigned from the 2nd database was dependant on the number of players you bought from the 1st. e.g. 18 players from the bidding section (1st database) would get you 4 players from the also rans (2nd database). When we had our 22 players then we would edit the database and get going

What I need help with
Like I say this has all been done in excel but im only a novice at it really. It took me a while searching the internet for the coding for it to work, but I have reached my capabilities. So the system picks a random player from the database but there is nothing from it selecting that player again. What I did was manually delete the player from the database once it was selected so it couldn’t be duplicated. Obviously this is not the best way to go about it and is time consuming. What I want to happen is that the player will only ever be selected once. I don’t know what would be best, to programme it so there’s no duplicates or program it so it automatically deletes the record once its been selected. This is the same for both databases and this is what I need help with. Again I don’t know if new code will have to be written for everything to get this to work or databases needing to be moved. Ignore the actual players in the databases for the moment as it was originally done for FM 2011 so will be out of date. I will sort that out after everything has been fixed.

I hope I have explained this well enough but have a look at the file and hopefully it will all become clear.

If anyone could help me with this I would be very grateful and hopefully other people will want to use the application. Obviously you will be credited with any work done and if you think you can make any improvements to the interface or anything feel free to do so.

Any questions please ask

Thanks
