Hi guys.

Now that I'm becoming a more experienced FM player, I want to start reading the game properly. Normally when I'm looking for players to buy I rely completely on my scouts and their star ratings, but what makes a player good is their attributes, right?

So if there's any advice anyone could give me for reading attributes correctly, I'd really appreciate it. And, of course, if there's another thread with all this information, please link me to it.

Cheers.

Well if you want realism then trusting your scouts is the right thing to do. Anyway I'm not entirely sure but in the tactics screen when you ave a player in a certain position in a certain role it will give you the most important attributes. I dont have the game loaded as I am on my iPad and I won't get on today as I have study but I'll try tonight to find it if no one has else has today. There is a topic to do with attributes but I can't remember the name of it. It s probably in the players forum.

read this Player Attributes Explained | Mantralux FM and this Sports Interactive Community
it explains every attribute and how they combine with eachother and how they work in game

in my opinion mental attributes are the most important ones, especially workrate decisions anticipation and determination

also about scouting
when i look for talented players i usually see if their attribute average for a certain role will be high enough
for example your scout finds a player who's best role is deeplaying playmaker and has 3.5 stars Ca and 4,5 PA , and his attribute average for the role is 14,3 , based on the fact that every half star of potential mean the player can improve most stats by 1, that player could improve most stats by 2 and his attribute average for that position could be around 16,5 which is probably world class

agree completely with paetoja. mental stats are often the most telling, and in particular work rate and determination. because those are the two that are most likely to determine how good a player turns out to be.

When looking at a player use the "view key attributes" button

this lets you highlight the key stats needed for each position on the player and you can quickly and easily see if he suits your tactic and role you want to use him in

Thanks, guys.

What does 14,3/16,5 mean?

its his attribute average for a role, the scouts tell you what the best role for your player is, then you can highlight the attributes in the player attribute section , add them together and divide by the number of attributes , thats how you know what average it is
there are a lot of player role calculators that work that way

most people believe that but its not so true according to this experiment Regen Youngsters Realizing their Potential - An Experiment - The Dugout Football Manager Community

workrate means the player will try and do as much as possible on the pitch, determination how long he will give his best during the game

Yes. Work rate, has nothing to do with how quick the player will reach ( or if he ever will reach) his potential but they are crucial to howe he uses his potential and I think thats what Malhar meant with " how good a player turns out to be."

It depends on a lot of thing like your tactic, your formation, what u want the player to do. I judge it simple:
Midfield= creativity + passing or tackling + aggression.
Striker = finishing + composure + physical attributes depend on the type of striker u want.
Wing = Speed + agility + flair.
Center back = Tackling, marking + strength +mental.
Fullback = acceleration + decision.
Goal keeper = composure + agility/positioning + reflection
When the most important attributes are high enough, the player would do well in long term regardless of the rest. Only if u want a super star in the position, u need to look at the others.
