usually 442 and possession are not closely related. You can obtain possession but there are going to gaps/area's of the pitch that will be vacant. Usually possession based tactics revolve around a player or two in each area of the pitch.

Also don't be fooled that you have to play narrow either. Stretching the play and providing width will offer players the space to receive the ball.
