Overall Best 11 calculation?

Can anyone explain or point me to where the overall best 11 squad is calculated?

There is a player in mine that has a much lower average rating, appearances and goals than a player in his position that is on the bench.

Anyone else have this?

I'm pretty sure it's just average rating however sometimes players don't make it due to the fact that they don't play in the formation of the Best XI. For example, I've had Sanchez, who was the EPL's player of the year, not make the leagues Best XI due to the fact that they played a flat 4-4-2, while I played him in a more advanced position higher up the wing.
