The 'Van Bommel' Way

View attachment 296235

Most know Mark Van Bommel as 'The Destroyer' or 'The Punisher' due to his tough tackling nature and sheer desire to win at all costs, however since retiring at the end of the 2013-14 season he has proved to be a shrewd tactition within the PSV youth ranks. Now his playing days are over it seems only a matter of time before he takes his first steps into management.

A Brief History

Mark Peter Gertruda Andreas van Bommel born 22 April 1977 in Maasbracht is a Dutch former professional footballer
He is also the son-in-law of the former Dutch national team manager, Bert Van Marwijk. When he played for Bayern Munich he was the club's first non-German captain. During this period, he led the team to two Bundesliga Title, and finished runner-up in the 2010 Champions league final.
He won the 2005-06 Champions League Final with Barcelona and was part of the Netherlands team that finished runner-up of the 2010 FIFA world cup. His FIFA World Cup profile describes him as "a tackling machine and expert ball-winner", but he also boasts a fine array of passes and a powerful shot, having been a free-kick specialist during his PSV days.
Between 2000 and 2011 he won eight national Championship titles in four different competitions, four with PSV Eindhoven two with Bayern Munich, one with Barcelona and one with A.C Milan.

A Press conference has been called at the 'Philips Stadion' home of Van Bommel's current employers where it is believed the former Bayern captain will announce his plans after leaving PSV...

The 'Announcement'

The room was filled with anticipation as Phillip Cocu entered the room accompanied by PSV club chairman Toon Gerbrands and director of football Marcel Brands. The trio occupied three of the available four seats at the conference table as the air was filled with uncertainty and expectation.

Gerbrands 'Firstly I would like to thank you all for attending this conference at such short notice and I would like to thank both Phillip and Marcel for taking the time to be in attendance. I would like to hand the conference to Phillip from he on out'

Phillip ' Thank you Toon, I will be both brief and concise. Having spent a wonderful 6 years at this club both myself and the board feel it is time that I step down from my role of PSV manager in order for new ideas and fresh approaches at the club. I want to thank the fans and the club for the backing and opportunities I have received during my tenure and wish the club success going forward '

Gerbrands 'Thank you Phillip and we wish you success in wherever your career takes you. Without further a do I would like to introduce the new first team manager at PSV Eindhoven FC... Mark Van Bommel'

Mark enters the room, shakes the hand of all three panel members and takes the seat alongside outgoing coach Cocu, the tension between the two is evident as the chairman announces that Van Bommel will hold his first press conference on the 30th June at the Philips Stadion. The room is filled with raised voices from members of the press as the panel make a quick exit.

//From here on out I will be writing the thread in diary format from the point of view of Mark Van Bommel, press conferences, opinions on the team and matches will all be in this tense.

//Comments, opinions and advice are always welcome and encouraged.

The 'First Press Conference'

I entered the press conference room in the Phillips Stadion, a room I had been in hundreds of times before in both a playing and coaching capacity... but today was different, today I was beginning my managerial career.

"Hello everybody, as most of you know by now my name is Mark Van Bommel and I am as of today the manager here at PSV Eindhoven. A club I have had the pleasure of spending many years with as a player and a coach and a club that is close to my heart. I would like to thank the board for giving me this opportunity and I would like to take this moment to open the floor to questions..."

Dirk Huddink - Sport1 "Welcome Mark, it came as a big surprise to most to hear that Phillip had stepped down, and an even bigger one that you had been chosen to take his place... care to comment on these events?"

"The last few days have been a whirlwind, myself and Phillip were good friends and it is sad that the situation has unfolded in the manner it has. However I believe I know the club better than most and for that reason I feel there is no better person to take the team forward. I am delighted that PSV can be my first step into management"

Boris Hurst - Metro "Your style of play was considered by many to be no holds barred, in this sense many are expecting your style of management to be comparable to that of Athletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone who has created somewhat of a siege mentality. Would we be right in expecting this?"

"Diego Simeone has proved over the past couple of seasons that his approach works, I can see where the press draws comparisons between the two of us but I believe our playing style is where those comparisons end. The players at my disposal at the club have a very high technical skill level, when you align this with the fact Holland is renowned for playing the beautiful game it is my hope that watching PSV over the coming season will an enjoyable experience. In relation to my management style this will no doubt evolve but I will assure you that effort will not be absent."

Martin Jones - BBC Sport "Mark this is a club that has been close to your heart as you say, they are six seasons without a league title now, how do you intend to change this?"

"Myself and the board are on the same page, we are heading in the same direction and want to get there in the same way. As far as the league title is concerned it is our belief that by playing the right style of football, that suits the players at the club then the title will take care of itself."

Martin Jones - BBC Sport "On the topic of players at your disposal where do you feel your strengths lie within the squad?"

"Of course established players such as Depay and Schaars will be pivotal, however I feel that we are very well stocked in all areas of the squad, Jetro, Bruma, Wijnaldum, Maher... the list is endless. And what's more is that all these players are born and bred here in Holland, I am sure that the fans will enjoy watching the club even more knowing that the team isn't full of foreign imports. That is all the time we have for questions today, I would like to thank you for your support today and hopefully for the coming season."

I enjoyed my first experience as the lead in this press related opera, the questions were clearly plants but it was good to be eased in... I'd rather do my talking on the pitch anyway like usual. Now the press conference was over Pre season was the only thing on my mind.

Was an admirer of Van Bommel on the pitch so will definitely be keeping an eye on his off field exploits. ;)

Squad Analysis

I had inherited a very strong group of players from Phillip, a group that had under achieved the season before finishing just 4th in the league. The core of my squad were Dutch players with a few foreign loanee's. My first thought was to terminate and loan agreements on players I felt didn't belong before looking at a analysis of my squad depth.

View attachment 296198

The report was given to me by Chris Van Der Weerden my assistant manager and if I'm honestI am very happy with it. We have very good strength in depths in the attacking half and players with big potential at the back. From this list of players the follwoing key players were identified.

Luuk De Jong

View attachment 296197

Luuk will be vital if we are to reclaim the league title, he will be the main source of goals and with players like Depay and Narsingh supplying the assists there is no reason I can see for any player to outscore him in this league. Luuk has something to prove after a few unsuccessful seasons in Germany and England and he seems fired up for the challenge.

Memphis Depay

View attachment 296190

Memphis was brilliant for Holland in Brazil and I'm hoping he will carry that form into the domestic season. A host of European giants are queuing up for the pacey winger but I have no plan on selling him in the near future. He will be tasked with supplying not just the assists but also chipping in with the goals as well. I've set his a target of 20 in the opening season.

Stijn Schaars

View attachment 296189

With so much attacking talent in the squad I will be looking to Stijn to add balance to the squad, at the age of 30 he is by far the oldest player in my first eleven and for this reason he will be leading the club. With a very youthful back four behind him I will be looking at Stijn to be both a calming influence and a warrior on the pitch.

Jeffrey Bruma

View attachment 296188

At the age of 22 Jeffrey will be our most experienced defender, I believe he will step up and deliver when it matters and evolve into a future captain of the club. His importance can not be underestimated, if we are to be successful this season the Jeffrey will need to be at his best.

Conclusions

If we are to be successful this year a few players are going to have to become very mature quickly. I will look at bringing in a seasoned centre back to play along side Bruma in order to guide him and the other promising centre backs we have at the club. Overall I am happy with the club I have been handed, other than Bakkali who clearly wants to leave I will look to tie down our most promising players to long term deals by making them understand the clubs aim... I have a feeling big things are going to happen here.

Pre Season

View attachment 296179 View attachment 296178

Pre season gave me the opportunity to bed in my first eleven with all but one starting all 6 games. The oldest player in the eleven was Schaars at 30 with the second oldest being just 23, despite the low age of the group the team performed very maturely dominating possession in all games and was it not for a woeful performance against Aarau then it would have been a perfect pre season. Memphis led the way with goals and man of the match performances but Bruma and De Jong were very impressive also.

Transfer Activity

View attachment 296177

Very little in the way of activity on the transfer front, Bakkali was sold before he left on a free in 10 months and we dipped into the market for two very promising young players from FC Twente. I am however still looking at bringing in a more experienced centre back and hopefully this business will be done before the season begins.

PSV Eindhoven Vs Motherwell

Euro Cup 3rd Qualifying Round

I have to say I am quite happy with the draw here, Motherwell will have to be taken serious but there were bigger clubs in the draw that we have managed to avoid. Motherwell have never won the trophy and we will look to progress to the group stage in our quest to seal our second Euro cup trophy.

August 2014 - Monthly Report

My first month of competitive football at the club has been a very successful one. 32 goals and only 5 conceded in 9 games during the month saw us progress in Europe and take our place atop of the league table. I am under no illusions that it will always be such plain sailing but I feel it is important to enjoy the good times while they are here.

Eredivisie

03/08/2014
FC Dordrecht 1 PSV 2
Kurto ('50 OG), Wijnaldum ('57 Pen)

Needless to say we came back down to earth with a bump after the brilliant performance in Europe. Lucky to come away from a game we dominated with the win thanks to and own goal and a penalty. Their goal came from an own goal also but the performance was not good enough against a newly promoted team we should have made an example of.

10/08/2014
PSV 5 SC Cambuur 0
Bergwijn ('3), De Jong ('9, '11), Depay ('20), Sno ('73 OG)

Our third clean sheet in 4 games and second time we have hit teams for five. I gave young Bergwijn a debut and he repaid me instantly with a beautiful solo goal. Early in the season but great to see us sitting above Ajax at the top of the table, another great performance from the lads.

17/08/2014
ADO Den Haag 0 PSV 6
Narsingh ('2, '44), Wijnaldum ('22 Pen), De Jong ('45+2, '49, '80)

Another goal glut from the lads, we seem to have the nack of killing off teams by half time. I have to say I am very impressed with the amount of chances we are creating, 30 times we threatened the ADO goal during this game with Luuk really turning on the style in the second half. Strandberg came off the bench to make his debut but my centre back pairing is cemented in place at the moment.

24/08/2014
Go Ahead Eagles 1 PSV 1
Depay ('41)

Our 100% record dissapears in a game that saw us finish up with ten men after Willems was injured late on ending any hope of us claiming a winner. In the end I am proud of the lads for showing heart in this one and staying unbeaten, I will be in contact with the physio first thing to check on a couple of knocks.

31/08/2014
PSV 5 FC Twente 2
Narsingh ('3), De Jong ('12), Wijnaldum ('52), Depay ('77), Hiljemark ('88)

Absolute domination over a team that I expected to offer more resistance. 5 different players on the score sheet shows that we have goals coming from all over the park as well as off the bench. The only downside of this game was that we allowed our opponents back into the game having been three up. This will be addressed on the training ground in the coming week.

Euro Cup

31/07/2014
Motherwell 0 PSV 7
Maher ('3, '18) Depay ('11, '23, '44) Wijnaldum ('21) De Jong ('56)

Well what can I say about my first game at the helm, 6 up at half time meant I used the opportunity to give debuts to a couple of youngsters at half time. Memphis was the involved in 4 of the goals but the whole team performed brilliantly. Time to get back to the drawing board for the weekend it's important to keep our feet on the ground.

07/08/2014
PSV 1 Motherwell 0
Locadia ('45+1)

Eleven changes to the team that played in Scotland and at the weekend but thankfully another win thanks to Lockies first of the season. Over the moon to progress through to the final qualifying round with a very impressive 8-0 aggregate scoreline.

21/08/2014
Zulte Waregem 0 PSV 2
Depay ('40), De Jong ('77)

The deadly duo strike again for us to hopefully book us a place in the group stages of the cup. We controlled the game from start to finish and once again the defence that i was so worried about before the season stood strong and denied any hope of our opponents bringing a goal back to the leg at our home.

28/08/2014
PSV 3 Zulte Waregem 1
Jozefzoon ('26), Locadia ('47), Guardado ('73 Pen)

Yet more character shown from the lads after coming from a goal down to seal a 5-1 aggregate victory. In all honesty I was happy when the whistle went as Zulte were far too physical for my liking, a trait that went unpunished by the officials yet ended with two of my lads having to be stretchered off.

Player Of the Month
Jeffrey Bruma & Jorrit Hendrix

View attachment 296062 View attachment 296061

Impossible to choose between these two this month as they provided a formidable centre back pairing in 7 of the 9 games this month. Much was expected from Jeffrey and he hasn't dissapointed but the rise of Hendrix means that the acquisition of Stefan Strandberg from Rosenberg has been of less importance to us. The award could have gone to a number of attacking options but due to my concern pre season with regards to the defence, the performance of these guys more than merits the award.

Euro Cup Group Stage Draw

PSV, Cukaricki, Buraspor, CFR Cluj

So today saw the draw for the group stages of the Euro Cup and again I have to say I am rather happy with it. Buraspor have a few talented players at the club mainly due to the loan system and Cluj have shown they are capable on the big stage with appearances in the Champions League in recent years. I feel we will have the quality over the group stage to come out on top, hopefully I may even be able to rest a few key players ahead of big league games if we can get the group sealed early.

September 2014 - Monthly Review

A month that raised a number of questions for myself, 5 wins in 5 but only the one clean sheet is the lasting memory for me this month. We threw away two goals leads on two occasions and the boys have now seen a side of me they won't want to be seeing very often. I can't be too dissapointed though as we have gone clear at the top and more importantly in my opinion 4 points clear of Ajax.

View attachment 295998 View attachment 295997 View attachment 295996

Eredivisie

14/09/2014
PSV 3 Excelsior 2
De Jong ('7), Depay ('13), Narsingh ('90+2)

When you are two goals up after 13 minutes at home you don't expect to be winning the game in the 92nd minute, it simply isn't acceptable. The boys were told a few home truths at full time and I am sure they will be better for it. Nobody is going to give us anything in this league and we can't expect to win all the time. Luckily Narsingh started the month well and looked impressive.

21/09/2014
Vitesse 2 PSV 4
Schaars ('34), Narsingh ('40, '72), Depay ('90)

Another game that should have been easier, we seem to be making a habit of conceding in pairs. However there were many positives none more than Narsingh bagging a brace keeping up his goal a game record in the league. Vitesse were always going to cause us issues and I am happy that we have passed our first real test of the season.

28/09/2014

Heracles 1 PSV 2
Wijnaldum ('28 Pen), Narsingh (40)

Another game we dominated and couldn't put to bed. Wijnaldum is becoming unstoppable from the spot and Luciano just can't stop scoring in the league, the win takes us 2 points clear at the top and we are looking very strong at the moment. Hoping going into next month we can rediscover the ability to kill off games early on.

Dutch Cup

25/09/2014
Noordwijk 0 PSV 3
Ter Avest ('45+1), Vloet ('53), Guardado ('60)

Very little to say on this game it went as expected once we found the break through. Ter Avest and Vloet both netted their first goals for the club and the latter is looking particularly impressive when the chance has arisen. Onto the next round we go and we are very confident.

Euro Cup

18/09/2014
PSV 2 Cukaricki 1
De Jong ('15), Depay ('37)

The 'easiest' of our group games at home to a team who were meant to lie down right? I am over the moon with the team for this game as they showed great character not to underestimate our opposition and hang in there when our opponents rallied in the second half. A good start to the cup campaign.

Player Of The Month

View attachment 295993

This guy really stamped his authority on all three league ties this month scoring 4 times in the 3 league encounters. In the company of De Jong and Depay you would forgive him for taking a back seat but since fully recovering from injury he has really pushed on and become a pivotal player.

Big Month update to come, we meet Ajax for the first time and travel away twice in Europe!!
