Lazio should feel really lucky to take anything away from this match. Joe Hart was absolutely outstanding today, making a number of key saves throughout the match, and denying Ronaldinho a chance to score from the spot in stoppage time. This game also marks Lazio's return to the 4-3-3 diamond system. Playing a rigid, fluid system did not help Lazio's cause, and they now find themselves staring at relegation unless they can manage to pull themselves back up.

With this loss, Lazio will have to make sure they beat Panathinaikos in their next group match in order to qualify for the first knockout round of UEFA Champions' League. In addition to that, Lazio's Sergio Floccari and Jô have both picked up injuries and will be sidelined for next two weeks. With their goalscoring threat put on hold, Lazio will have to find another way to generate offense.
"It's a huge loss for us, especially in this part of the season." Says Lazio manager.
Lazio will have to rely on youngsters Eyal Golasa and Daniel Aquino to help them get through the next two to four matches. Not everything is as dark as it seems however. Flamboyant Dutch midfielder/defender, Hedwiges Maduro, is finally fully fit and can be included in Lazio's first team plans. Maduro was sidelined for three months due to his torn hamstring which he suffered back on September 10th in a game vs Cagliari.
"I simply cannot wait for the game to kick off." Says the Dutchman. "I feel fully fit, and ready to go."

Jô will make his return for Lazio, if brought on. Ezio Sella’s contract as Lazio’s assistant manager has been mutually terminated for a fee of $65k. Sella’s performed well as Lazio’s assistant manager, but the recent league performance prompted the management to look at the alternative. January Update

With Bierhoff's appointment, Lazio started its slow path to recovery. The new assistant manager wasted no time in submitting his player ratings, and giving his suggestions on ways to fix the team's performance and pull them out of their slump.

Johannes Ketterl was, in Bierhoff's opinion, contributing to team's negative energy and had to be sent out. Ketterl was loaned out to Shakhtar Donyetsk on January 21, 2012, and will remain with them until the end of the season.
Dušan Tadić was sold to Catania for $3.7mil USD, in order to fix up the situation at AMC position.

"We felt these moves would serve the team very well going foraward," says Bierhoff.
"I firmly believe that this team can make a decent push for a mid-table finish with the current roster."
Lazio's push will be more than likely very tough due to Oscar Cardozo's illness. Cardozo was diagnosed with a serious viral infection that will keep him out of action for the next five to six months.

"Oscar was an integral piece of the puzzle. He is our quarterback in attack, leading the offensive line towards the opposition goal, and his presence will be severely missed." says Džajić.

Cardozo was brought in form Portuguese side Benfica for a fee of $24mil USD in August of last year, and has scored 6 goals, collected 2 assists, and 1 man of the the match award during his 13 appearances for his new team.

Joe was a beast during the past few months, and the fans felt it was more than appropriate to reward him for his hard work. Hart has been stellar for his new club ever since arrival, and has all but stolen Fernando Muslera's job as a starter within Lazio's ranks. With newly appointed defensive rock, Carrico, Hart's job has been made that much simpler. Fans will no doubt be disappointed with the team's showing in the Italian Cup, but this will allow for the team to concentrate on building up team harmony and maintaining good results within Serie A.

Transfer Update: January 30, 2012

View attachment 81477 View attachment 81478
Lazio have just spent $12.5mil USD on Fenerbahce's central defender Nedum Onuoha, who was brought in based on Lazio keeper's recommendation.

"I have no reservations about this deal. Nedum is a fine defender, and someone of his quality will really help boost our team confidence."

Onuoha is expected to make his debut on Sunday, February fifth when Lazio square off against Cagliari.

In other news, after 10 seasons with Inter, out of favor Dejan Stanković, has been transferred back to Lazio for a reported fee of $1.3mil USD.

Fans in Rome are getting restless. Speculation is abound that Lazio's manager, Dragan Džajić, will retire from management with the start of next season. However, according to Lazio's chairman, Claudio Lotito, this will not be the case. Either way, the fans will have to wait until July 1 to see what will happen with their club.

Injury Update:

Lazio's injury problems have just become a whole lot worse than they were before. In addition with Cardozo's viral infection, Lazio's flamboyant young attacking midfielder/striker, Mauro Zárate, has suffered a torn calf muscle in training on Friday (March 23, 2012), which will put him out of commission for the next 3 to 4 months. Not all is lost for Biancocelesti however, as Sergio Floccari readies himself to make a return to action after recovering from his twisted ankle injury he suffered 3 weeks ago.

End of Season Update:

A press conference is about to be called at Stadio Olimpico. The conference will mainly deal with state of affairs in Lazio's front office, and will also focus on the team's underachievement in Italian Serie A this eason. Among the CEO's present are Dragan Džajić, and his assistant, Oliver Bierhoff.
The following is an interview with Italian sports journal, Corriere dello Sport Stadio.

  1. CS: "How would you sum up this previous season in terms of performance?"DDž: There is no doubt about it, we steered way off course this season. The lads showed up, and lit it up against our pre-season opponents, but once the season started, it was like they got wrecked by a tsunami. Everything was in complete shambles. The team lost their chemistry, and started losing those crucial early games.
OB: The lads had the best of intentions, but found it hard to show that on the pitch. Cardozo's injury sidetracked our progress. We had to adjust strategies, play in different formations, and generally try to focus on playing fluidly, instead of our usual balanced attacking approach. We had to adjust for the lack of adequate replacement for Oscar's position, and that's what ended up contributing to our eventual downfall.
  2. CS: "What are your plans for the future? Do they entail any new signings, or is the team going to focus their energy into development of chemistry with the current core of players?"
DDž: That is a great question. You know, I will have to sit back and assess the situation once more before I can honestly answer that. I am very happy with the current core of players we possess, and for now, I would focus more on development of their skills. Only time will tell.
  3. CS: "You have been recently named as the new manager for Ivory Coast's national side. What are your feelings on this matter, and is running the national side, in any way, going to affect your commitment to Lazio?"
DDž: There's no doubt that my time will be split between the two sides. I will do my utmost to maintain both teams in a top-notch, competitive position. Make no mistake, I can make both sides involved very proud of our teams' success!
  4. CS: "Where do you see S.S. Lazio in the table about mid-way through next season?"
DDž: My wish is to see the team occupy a respectable, top-flight position. All I can do is try and steer them in that direction, but as far as predictions go, I don't want to go there. Oliver will take care of team morale, and as long as he keeps the lads happy, good results will follow.
Based on this interview, it is safe to assume that we will not be hearing from Džajić in pre and post match conferences with the start of the next season. Lazio's fans are expecting the team to finish better than they did this season, but cannot, in all honesty, hope for the championship quite just yet, as their team is some ways off target on that front.

Summer 2012 Update:
Lazio's only tasks during this off-season will be to rebuild their shattered team image, and build up team fitness and chemistry as much as possible until the start of the new Serie A season. Unfortunately, Lazio have not been able to qualify for any continental competitions for this season, so their fans will be expecting far more from them when it comes to league and cup performance. There will be no big changes to the club make-up, and Oscar Cardozo is scheduled to make his much anticipated return after a viral infection sidelined him for most of the last season.
The only significant players that departed from the club were Johannes Ketterl (Paris St. Germain, $2.5mil USD), Juan Pablo Carrizo (Juventus, Free Transfer), and Albano Bizzarri (Valenciennes FC). Lazio are currently feeling out the market for a backup goaltender to Joe Hart, since Vincent Shaban is some way off the mark for that job. Major contenders for this role are Vincent Enyeama (AS Saint-Etienne), Carlos Kameni (R.C.D. Espanyol de Barcelona), and Rafael Santos (Corinthians).

Friday, August 10, 2010:
Biancocelesti have just solved their goal tending dilemma. Lazio bought Corinthians' goalie, Rafael Santos for a reported fee of $9mil USD. The transfer comes with a high price, considering that Santos will more than likely be the backup to the starter Joe Hart, who has won over the fans at Olimpico with relative ease since his arrival from Manchester City for $3.7mil USD, back 2010.

This was one of the stronger pre-seasons so far for Lazio. The fans are pleased with the majority of results, with exception to the draw with HSV, and losses to AC Milan and FC Bayern.
The fans were particularly pleased with Lazio's friendly win over Liverpool at Olimpico. Lazio fans have every right to expect big things from their club this season, and the manager has promised to reward the players with high bonuses, should they succeed to accomplish their goals.
