A new era may be dawning at Atletico Madrid this morning after rumours were going around the Spanish capital that much loved manager Quique Sanchez Flores has been removed from his post as manager of Club Atlético de Madrid, S.A.D.

Club Atlético de Madrid, S.A.D, commonly known as Atletico Madrid, are a Spanish football club based in the capital city of Madrid. They play their home games at the 55,000 seater stadium known as the Vicente Calderon, named after their one time president. This being said, the team that is commonly known as Madrid's second team, will move into a new 73,000 seater called the Estadio de Madrid.

The Red and White warriors hold a bitter rivalry with fellow city team, Real Madrid, who are undoubtedly the more successful of the teams. Legends of the Atleti team include Luis Aragones, Adrian Escudero and in more recent times, Manchester United reject, Diego Forlan.

Atleti fans wave goodbye to Flores

Today, the rumours proved true as it was discovered that Quique Sanchez Flores has left his post as Atletico Madrid manager. This came as a massive surprise to many around the country as Flores was much loved by fans from the red and white side of the capital. The former Atleti man had great success with the team after only managing them for one year. Even though it was a short period, he managed to guide them to an infamous Europa League win, beating English side Fulham in the final. He also guided Atletico to 9th place in the Liga BBVA, but this was considered a somewhat underachievement.

Next Atletico Madrid manager

Luis Aragones 5/2
Vincent Del Bosque 4/1
Ottmar Hitzfeld 7/1
Martin O'Neill 10/1
Carlos Queiroz 16/1

Legendary former Atleti manager is favourite to be the next manager and to return to the team that he led to so much glory. Carlos Queiroz may be a long shot at 16/1 but a lot of money has been coming for former West Ham manager Daniel Oakes to take the post as he has come in from 100/1 in to just 20/1. Someone knows something it seems.................

Atletico announce new manager

Today, Atletico de Madrid President Mr. Enrique Cerezo Torres announced the new man at the helm at the Vicente Calderon. That man will be young English manager Daniel Oakes. Even with being young, Oakes has a wealth of experience with his previous six year stint at West Ham United. This may be what caused the gamble to be landed. Here is Oakes's opening statement.

Daniel Oakes said:
It was unfortunate that Flores was removed from his job here as I thought he had some success, but I will look to relish in the opportunity I have been given. I am so excited to take control at a side that has so many prospects for the future. The board has given me their full backing and to beat managers such as Luis Aragones and Martin O'Neil to the job is an absolute honour. I hope to make them proud.

Oakes brings in new faces

34978_news.jpg

Former Seville midfielder, Enzo Maresca became Atletico Madrid's first signing since appointing English manager Daniel Oakes as boss. Enzo is understood to have come in on a free and will surely prove a steal for Oakes's side.

Daniel Oakes said:
I am very happy to capture Enzo. He is a quality player and as soon as I saw that he was a free agent, I knew we needed to get him. We fought off fierce competition and I believe he is very excited about his next journey, with us. He will be trying to push Assuncao for his place in the side.

Varane_Raphael_RC_Lens_2.jpg

The second signing Oakes made was one of 17 year old French centre back Raphael Varane from Lens. The deal to bring the Frenchmen to Spain is understood to have cost Atletico around £3 million.

Daniel Oakes said:
Not many people have heard of Raphael, but I now what I am doing. I have seen him play for Lens and he looks like the next William Gallas. He will shine here and show that I have brought him here for a reason.

sergio-araujo.jpg

The next man that Daniel Oakes brough to Vicente Calderon was an 18 year old Argentine striker by the name of Sergio Araujo. The lad looks to have an immense future ahead of him already after scoring 11 goals for the Argentina youth set up. Araujo arrives on a deal worth £1.4 million and has a contract until 2013.

Daniel Oakes said:
I am delighted to bring Sergio to the club, he has a very bright future ahead of him and I believe several teams have missed the boat here.

RafaelPereiradaSilva.jpg

The next man to arrive at the Calderon was Rafael on loan from English giants Manchester United. Rafael has a great future ahead of him and Atletico will look to benefit that by taking him on a season long loan for a fee of £750K.

Daniel Oakes said:
Rafael will be a good player for us, he is another young player but I believe he can develop very well here at the Calderon. I may look into a permanent deal if all goes well but I am sure Sir Alex will want to keep hold of him.

Criestig.jpg

Daniel Oakes's youth system at Atleti took another stride as 17 year old defensive midfielder Lorenzo Crisetig signed from Inter Milan. The deal is belived to have cost £1.4 million.

Daniel Oakes said:
Lorenzo is going to make the future for this club and he will be getting a few first team opportunities straight away. He is already in the Itly setup and that shows you what a talent he is. He is yet another great youngster that has been added to our ranks.

In what is considered to be a brilliant piece of business, Atletico Madrid have completed their transfers by bringing in Ryan Babel on a free transfer from Liverpool. Babel has found himself out of favour at Liverpool since falling out with Rafa Benitez but sees Atleti as a new lease of life for him.

Daniel Oakes said:
Wow! What a signing this was for the club. Before Ryan joined Liverpool, he was looking to be one of the hottest properties in Europe, then the English club gave him very little chance to shine. I will make sure that his talent is recognised.

Pre Season Friendlies

Cartagena 1-1 Atletico

Santos 4-3 Atletico

Corinthians 0-0 Atletico

Amoros 0-4 Atletico

Rayo 0-3 Atletico

UEFA Super Cup

Goran-Pandev-001.jpg

Inter too good as Oakes's team are brushed aside

Goals from Dejan Stankovic and Goran Pandev today ensured that the Champions of Europe went away with the UEFA Super Cup. New manager Rafa Benitez truelly out trumped Oakes in tactics and the Italian team showed more bite. The Champions League winners will now be heading into the new Serie A season full of momentum as Atletico will head home mulling over their missed chances. Maicon ripped Atletico Madrid apart with his fantastic pace alongside the right side and creating one assist.

Daniel Oakes said:
I am very disappointed with walking aay from Monace without the trophy. I fully believed that we could have and we should have won today but our boys were not up to the task. We will need to improve come the beginning of the season.

Its Kick-Off Time!

Shown below is how Daniel Oakes's Atletico Madrid side will be lining up this season, if all of Oakes's best players are available to him.

catlticomadridsadatmadr.png

Oakes's side looks strong in most depatments and he will surely be looking to challenge for at least third place this season. If one area is to be criticised, it may be Atleti's defence, but with Oakes being a very attack minded coach, he will look to outscore his opponent at every opportunity.

First game

In Daniel Oakes's first league game in charge of Atletico Madrid, the Colchoneros took on Sporting Gijon. It turned out that Oakes could not have hoped for an easier start as his side romped to victory. Diego Forlan opened the scoring and shortly after, found himself a hattrick hero as he completed it with just seven minutes between the first goal and the last. Sergio Aguero then got his goal just seven minutes later. Alberto Rivera got what was alreadt a consolation goal for Sporting after 40 minutes and Atleti went into the break at 4-1 up. The second half was not as fantastic but Ryan Babel grabbed his first goal for the club, whilst Kun Aguero completed his brace. A phenominal 6-1 win for Atleti on Day 1 of Liga BBVA.

Atletico's second league game of the season came against Athletic Club in Bilbao. Things started very rosily for Oakes's side as Sergio Aguero gave them the lead after just eight minutes. Kun quickly scored his second on the half hour mark to give Atleti a half time lead. However, in the end, Oakes's side were made to rue missed chances as unlikely Athletic made a two goal come back from only ten minutes before the final whistle. Two points dropped for Atleti.

In the second match of their month of September, Los Colchoneros travelled to Ukraine to take on Metalist. It took over an hour for the game's first goal to come and it went to the away side through an own goal. Oakes;s side were again made to suffer as the Ukrainian side knocked home the equaliser deep into injury time.

Next came one of manager Daniel Oakes's massive tests of the season, a home game against league champions Barcelona. Oakes's came up trumps when his side came away with a famous win against the shell shocked Catalans. It was an Andreu Fontas own goal that proved the pivotal decider in a match for the memories of Atleti fans.

atmadridvbarcelonainfor.png

In a busy period for Oakes's team, Atletico travelled to Valencia in what was sure to be a cracker. It proved to be so as five goals came from the match. Roberto Soldado gave the home side the lead after just twelve minutes. Just after the half hour mark, Diego Forlan scored the leveller with a driven finish.Ten minutes later, Forlan scored his second to put Oakes's side in a well deserved lead. After half time, Atleti led but they looked a lot poorer than they played in the first half. Dominguez scored an equalising penalty before Soldado put one home on the 74th minute to give Valencia a win in an exciting encounter.

After two very tricky games, Oakes's side took on Zaragoza in the first of two easier fixtures to end the month. Goals from Diego Forlan, Alvaro Dominguez and Simao before an Ander strike gave Atletico Madrid a comfortable victory.

atmadridvzaragozainform.png

Daniel Oakes ended his first full month of fixtures in charge with a relatively straight forward home game against Timisora in the Europa League. Diego Forlan was on form as he had scored a brace after just twelve minutes. Added to that, goals from Simao and Filipe gave Atletico an impressive win.

Player of the Month

Diego-Forlan-001.jpg

Diego had a fantastic month, scoring 8 goals in just 7 appearances. He was the only man to consider for the award.
